IJN Cruisers Flee Fearsome xAKs

Post by SeethingErmine »

I think it's "the emperor demands your ritual suicide" time for my task force commander! [:D]
Night Time Surface Combat, near Baker Island at 145,136, Range 12,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CL Kiso
CL Tenryu
CL Yubari
DD Ikazuchi
DD Inazuma

Allied Ships
xAK Tambua
xAK Adelong
xAK Iron Crown
xAK Iron Prince

Reduced sighting due to 3% moonlight
Maximum visibility in Partly Cloudy Conditions and 3% moonlight: 9,000 yards
Range closes to 10,000 yards...
Range closes to 9,000 yards...
CONTACT: Japanese lookouts spot Allied task force at 9,000 yards
Japanese TF attempts to evade combat
Range increases to 12,000 yards...
Range increases to 12,000 yards...
Both Task Forces evade combat

The situation, of course, is that my task force is "low" on ammo - around 40% for most of the main gun armaments, except for the long lance torps which are all used up. Notably, not a single gun is actually out of ammo. One thing that surprised me is I reran the turn on High and then Absolute threat tolerance and my TF still ran away. I suppose it makes sense that threat tolerance doesn't interact with the low ammo retreat override, but the "never retreat" description on absolute kind of fooled me. Makes me wish I had an "engage defenseless transports until you are literally out of ammo" button though. [:)]

I seem to run into this a lot, where I think the TF is good for one more intercept, but it refuses to engage before reloading ammo. I guess I need to route any TF close to 50% for home? Or is there something I'm missing?

Perhaps they thought those were battleships?

Maybe 3% moonlight means that they weren't almost completely blind, but tried to evade collision & rather not thinking about combat... [;)] althought the visibility of 9000 yards seem quite good... [&:]

Haha, I'm sure that's what the mission report from the commanding officer said, at any rate. [:)]

Don't look at his stats! Simply order him to 'atone' for his failure!

62 Ldr, 68 Insp, 64 Nav, 55 Agg

An inspiring retreat order, no doubt!

The task force got an ops message about ammo and was rerouted after evading combat, so I'm 99% sure that's the only explanation needed here. Funny thing is the TF actually spotted and reacted into this enemy TF (it was going by in the next hex), before deciding to run away.

I went back and kicked the three ships lowest on ammo out of the TF and reran the turn. This time the TF started at 60% gun and 80+% torp ammo, and ended up with much better results.

Afterwards, the cargo ships actually stumbled into my TF a second time. However, on this fight the ammo level for the TF had fallen below some key threshold, so retreat from the burning hulks is ordered immediately.

Yeah, you don't want to be too near those burning hulks. It could be dangerous. It may have been a fire ship trap! Running away is a good alternative...[:@]

Ritual atonement is the order of the day. Offer him a serrated blade too.
