Some people would argue that I have already done that!

If I can get another turn of movement for the KB then I have a real chance of catching some things at sea.  If I get two turns without being seen then I MAY plan a surprise Port Strike against Sydney or Melbourne.  That might be really fun!

New Year's Eve 1941

Post by John 3rd »

The Americans must be stunned to see the Japanese BB Yamato and Musashi appear at Johnston Island on New Year's Eve 1941. This powerful STF had hit Palmyra just two days ago and then suddenly appears off this next island protecting the perimeter of Pearl Harbor. A small ASW TF is spotted and the 3 PC and 1 DMS are quickly dispatched. Though the Japanese Admiral thinks about pressing on to Midway and hitting whatever might be there, he prudently decides to retire to Kwajalein for fuel and ammunition after sinking 2 DD, 3 PC, 1 DMS, and an AKL.

Meanwhile the KB is NOT spotted as it slides SW of Noumea. Several Jake Recon planes make their presense known to the area but no one spots the actual TFs. Tomorrow the planes onboard will have the following changes made: Zeros 50% CAP and 50% Escort, Vals on Naval Attack, and Kates on Port Attack--Sydney. We'll see what a surprise attack may net...

Milne Bay falls and the PM Invasion Force is 2/3 through the Coral Sea and shall round the eastern tip tomorrow before setting course for PM. Moresby itself is Swept by Zeros, the AF is hit by Nells, and a unit is bombed by newly arrived Sallys. Detection Level is 9 of 10 over the base and all we see are 3 units estimated to be around 7,500 men.

The India idea isn't a bad one. Although I think a full-out conquest of India is impossible in AE, a tactical landing around Calcutta (Northeast India on an actual map, so that's what I'll call it), is a good idea.

It's almost better to pretend to be stalled in Burma before you do it, because if he commits a bunch of units to Burma, they will be cut-off from this landing. The Indian Army is very weak in the early going, so Calcutta itself should be takeable.

I see the following benefits:

1. Cut off and destroy units, particularly those committed to Burma.
2. Weaken the Indian Army. This is important, because they are a real threat to Burma later on.
3. You can use the industry in NE India for awhile

Holding it is basically impossible; as soon as the Indian Army is strong enough, later in 1942, they will be able to push you back. You can't take it with the idea of holding it.

The Burma Army could withdraw to China; this would prevent it's destruction, but it wouldn't be an offensive force, as there are no supplies (and if you take NE India, no flying supplies over the "Hump".)

The New Years dawns with great hopes for the Empire of Japan.

In the first screenshot, we see the Port Moresby Invasion Force approaching its target. Landing should be on the 3rd/4th. The 3 BBs will move in and bombard the target on the 3rd. We've managed to keep the AF damaged for over two weeks so I don't expect much in the way of Forts yet. There continue to be 3 units located there with estimated strength of 7,500. The 4th ID lands there with two SNLF to back them up if needed.

Approaching Fun

Post by John 3rd »

While the PM Invasion Force (which hasn't been spotted) moves towards its destination, the KB approaches its target of Sydney. The Fleet will hit the Port with ALL of its Kates. This should be approximately 125 of the Torpedo Planes. Zeros are set at 40% CAP so that should put about 50 over the Fleet and 80 as Escort. All Vals are set for Naval Attack in case anything is at sea when we reach the area.

Here is the movement:

A bold shipyard expansion! You'll need to expand HI quite a bit eventually, considering new aircraft factories coming online and the pilot training program expansion in 1943.

One thing I don't understand though, is the reason to expand Nate's production. It's a suicide box. It's not even a good suicide box, because its bombload is too small for a proper kamikaze plane to throw into the Allied grinder later in the war. The only reason to produce it is using up the pile of engines you have at the start.

Also, I was surprised to see the surplus of Jakes. Even without expanding various small shore units, Jake seems to be in high demand as a ship-based search and ASW plane. They take large ops losses too.
