3.4 178 Alpha

Post by ralphtricky »

*corrected instructions*
This is unofficial, don't contact Matrix support, either post in the support forum or email me if you have questions.

This is for the people having issues with the 3.4 Beta Patch. Even if you install, you should install any later 3.4 Beta or Production patches.

Please only install it if you know what you're doing, or are willing to spend time on the support forums so someone can walk you through it.

I'm going to put up a zip file containing many of the files that should be in 3.4.

To apply, make sure first that you have a running installation patched up to 3.4.173, or a running installation of 3.0 or 3.2 that you patched to 3.4 in the same directory and couldn't run. Then unzip these files and copy them over top of the existing files. You may want to rename or copy the existing files first.

This is a straight zip, no installation, no uninstall, etc.

The patch is at

Toaw 3 - Slow.exe is for Athlon XP and other early machines.
Toaw 3 - Windows 98.exe is for (you guessed it, Windows 98)

I'll check back as often as I can to see how things are going.

Thanks for this Ralph.  By the way the help screen holds no information about what version this is.

ARGHHHH!!!!

If you right-click click on the exe (or just mouse over it on some OS's) it will tell you the version.

It works for me, so it's going to be hard to trouble-shoot, but I'll see what I can do.

make sure first that you have a running installation patched up to 3.4.173

So just to be clear, because I can't get any version of 3.4 to run, I shouldn't mess with .178 ?

Yes, you should. I should have said, If you've installed any running version, then patched using the 3.4 Beta patch, then give this a try.

Can be further improved:
1) after "n" key - next unit - screen is not centered on the next unit
2) after "d" key - dig unit - preview unit in the upper right corner of the screen does not update and does not indicate that the unit is diging
Sorry for my English. It is not the best.

Sorry, but thank God it doesn't... how can you micro manage many units with the sceen "jumping" all the time?
(it's one of the long time requests from several players that finally was attended with 3.4)

Click the unit in the unit panel (upper right corner) and it will center.

I have updated to 304 178 Alpha version. On all my maps, I cannot remove the grey border underneath the text on the map. I have a screen to show what I mean. You will notice that "standard text contrast" is selected under the option menu.
The text contrast does work correctly on the unit panel, it does not work on the map. I did not notice this prior to updating.

Another little "thngie"... anybody experienced issues with the huge map view showing no terrain? Maybe a vid drv issue, I don't know. XP Home, and latest vid drv. Though I might have to add, I use a netbook, hence not a super 3D vid card.

Working with the WinXP Athlon Opart - Slow.

Right clicking a unit and bringing up the Unit Report box, when the box is closed the mouse cursor jumps back to the previous location. Right clicking the unit in the box in the upper right corner to bring up the Unit Report box, when the box is closed the mouse cursor jumps back to the upper right corner. I didn't know if its supposed to be this way, if it is it takes some getting used to.

When sifting thru an enemy stack of units, the circle of stars flashes and the unit view box in the upper right corner also flashes. The info displayed at the lower part of the screen also disappears. All the flashing and disappearing is a little distracting.

It was probably the same. You may have to change the settings in the Opart 3 Fonts.ini file to change that. I'll take a look at it, but it probably won't be fixed for 3.4 if there is a work-around.

I changed the behavior on most of the dialogs to put the mouse near the close button when it opens and to return the mouse to where it was before the dialog popped up. If you're using U or the right click menu to pop up the unit menu, I think it makes sense, but I forgot about clicking on the little buttons on the right.

I'll look into the flashing for 3.5. I upgraded to a new machine recently, so thost things aren't that noticeable to me. I don't have an old Athlon XP machine to play around with, so performance issues like that are harder to spot.

Background=N in Placename Font 1 - 4 in the Opert 3 fonts.ini should do it. Iirc, after first installing 3.4 the standard Opart 3 fonts.ini generated with the patch did set Background to Y.

EDIT: That it is. The Opart 3 fonts.ini in the Alpha Patch.zip has indeed Background set to Y.
