Welcome!
If you are playing the against the AI as the allies I offer:
1.)Protect your tankers. Get them out of the DEI and protect them you don't have enough
2.)and speaking of not having enough, you don't have enough of anything for a while. This includes carrier aircraft so use those only when you have to
3.) Build up bases with supplies and fuel to support future offensives.
4.) Yes, the Japanese will "run wild" for 6 plus months
5.) turn off automatic upgrades for aircraft so you can select where your limited upgrades go
6.) Sorry, but you will have to learn pilot training
7.) Remember the part abut not having enough? Eventually, you will have more than enough of almost everything, so don't sweat losing some stuff
8.) sorry about having to sacrifice the life and family, but it really was necessary. Half measures just won't do here

Thanks for the tips. Pilot training is a head scratcher.

I see a lot of insight and advise here but someone should do a national speaking tour at various conferance centers and hold a "How to win at WITP-AE" weekend event....like those get rich quick things. Or hold a class at Community Colleges for like 13 weeks on how to play this game....I would pay and sign up for it.

Well, you're lookin' at it. The forum is your college. It's online learning-distance education model.

You can subscribe to multiple AAR courses, test your hypotheses on your own and report back your scientific findings to your peers. Only problem though-I've been enrolled in this college for about 8 years (picked up UV in 2002) and am still barely 'making the grade'.

I am not a strategist, logistics guru or tactician.

If nothing else, you will have to be a logistics guru. Think of this game as the biggest hugest "train set" that you'll likely get to run. It gets very busy. Even as the Allies [in PBEM game] I never have enough cargo ships for all that I think need doing. That, in itself, teaches patience.

WitP-AE was not made to be won; it was made to be played! [:)]

I've had the game for 6 months but haven't really tackled it seriously until a few weeks ago (did 2 PBEMs right after I bought it but I was rubbish). Once you pass the phase of "let's just click a lot and wing it, I have no idea what's going on half the time anyway" and you start to get some experience and augment it with info from both the manual and especially here, you get more and more addicted. I can't make a day without playing it, personally. As I'm sure most people here can't either. [:D]

I have developed some stock responses to CINC-Home when she starts in on my hobby -- I will gladly share them with you as you embark on your first game:

CINC-Home: You spend too much damned time with that game!
Me: Honey, just think how much money I would spend and how much time away from you if I was in to golfing or boating! Computer games are a wonderful hobby! One of the great things about this game is that I am at home with you and the kids, and not at the bar with all my co-workers drinking too much, eating bad food and oogling the waitresses. Not only am I saving money, I am improving my health and our marriage.
CINC-Home: It would be even better if you bathed once in a while

CINC-Home: We don't talk anymore because you are always on the damned computer!
Me: Dear, while it is true that we don't talk as much, haven't you noticed our conversations have improved. Our communication has gotten much better. With more limited time, you now tend to get right to the point and I really listen instead of getting easily distracted while you talk. Since I started playing WITP, you don't have the time to tell me about the tragedy that befell your second cousin's best friend's aunt twenty years ago in Peru, and I don't have to pretend to be interested. It's all about honesty -- and this game has really helped us in that department.
CINC-Home: Except you keep calling me Betty.

CINC-Home: You waste so much time!
Me: I understand that I spend time with WITP, but I don't think educating myself is a waste of time. I can now teach our children many valuable historical and geographical facts that I didn't know before. The children will really benefit from my investment of time on this historical simulation. Education is a good thing, and helping our children is even a better thing.
CINC-Home: They really need to know what year the Essex's arrive to succeed in life?

CINC-Home: The house if falling apart; when are you going to start doing some repairs! And you haven't cut the grass in three weeks!
Me: Perhaps we shouldn't focus so much on material things. You know, life is not about keeping up with the Jones's. The number one killer of middle-aged men is stress -- it leads to heart attacks and a host of other often fatal conditions. So, I've decided to not worry about those material things so much any more. Playing WITP allows me to de-stress, and that is a good thing. I will live longer, and we will be able to enjoy our grandchildren together. I really look forward to that.
CINC-Home: You will not survive the weekend if you don't mow RIGHT FRACKING NOW!

CINC-Home: Are you ever coming to bed? ..... Do you want to have sex?
Me: OK. See, I told you our communication has improved.
CINC-Home: You aren't getting near me unless you take a shower.

Regards,
Feltan

I've updated with some additional comments from the CINC lest false hopes be raised.

One question I have about search arcs...I know it is not working as intended and if I understand the thread correctly The arcs are more or less non-search arcs and work opposite of what they are supposed to do. So do I just not use them or use them for the where I don't want to search?

No - that was thought to be the case but further testing by the programmer who is fixing them (for a future patch) revealed that it's more random than that - arcs just don't work at the moment. When you search set the 'arc' to start 000 end 000 (or just click on the 'reset arcs' button) and you will not be using arcs. That method uses some older code which will give a reasonable search. When arcs are fixed (and the patch out I mean) they will give a better search within the arc.

VMF,

Don't assume you are going to "throw my life away." That is a bit of an over reaction from a new player. However, as many of us will attest, thing will change. Don't assume all the changes are bad.

The routine from now on is:

Wake up
get dressed
go to work to make some money
get home
do some chores to keep the family happy till bedtime
play WitPAE until some ungodly hour
repeat until fatigue level hits 80
put yourself into the General Reserve pool to recuperate until fatigue is below 20 (about 3 cycles)
start over...
So much WitP and so little time to play.... :-(

Have a standing order at a florist to send a dozen roses to your wife on her birthday and your anniversery.  That way you are covered when you forget because you think you had KB trapped.

The amount of useless trivia you learn here is kind of astounding.
Yup, here one I learned yesterday. San Francisco is one of the few cities to use wooden fire ladders. They don't conduct electricity and San Francisco has cable cars and is seismically active therefore they have lots of wires:

Most questions can be answered in fairly short order so enjoy your newfound lifepartner....

Welcome! Your new mistress is at the same time fascinating, beautiful, elegant, smart, ugly and sometimes boring. You get to figure out the respective ratios. [8D]

But the VERY BEST THING about your new "mistress" is that you can hit "save" whenever you need to, and she will always be happy to see you when you have time to play again. Never try this with a real woman... [:D]

Once again thank you all for the warm welcome. I thought I should at this time tell you all a little about myself. I have enjoyed WWII games, movies and toys since I was I guess 10ish playing with those little plastic army men....My friend and I would play for hours everyday all summer long. I even took the family picinic table and brought it into my froom and nailed some sides on it and filled it with dirt so I could play with them........If my sons did that now I would kill them!!! (not really of course).
I had watched many John Wayne WWII movies and others but I think it really hit me when I saw Midway on HBO many many years ago. I met a friend in school who shared my interests and we would play Avalon Hill games and Pacwar on our Atari. The games now have gotten way better and more indepth and maybe even a need to have gone to West Point or Annapolis but I hope to pass the same interest to my sons, who are both 8 and be able to play against them.
I have since found many of the board games I use to play on Gameboard geek.com and have contiplated buying them just to fill that childhood void. I have played WITP, not a lot but enough to not be called a virgin to this game. I my expectaions are not to re-create history, as far as I am concerned the only thing that should be the same is right before I start giving orders. I am not one who says "hey that shouldn't have happend, it didn't IRL".
I hope to one day play one of you in a PBEM game but with a full time job and 3 kids (2 boys that are 8 and my daughter who is 4) I don't think I could invest the time to keep the game moving. Your AAR's are wonderful and tell me you all have a feel or understanding of the period and a knowledge of the war far more then just who won.
As you see in my screen name it came from the TV show. Fell in love with the Coursair when I saw it and have named many a fantasy baseball team "The Blacksheep" since.
Well I will end this rambling and you will see my posts with questions in the future, some good but most dumb [8|]
again thank you all and I look forward to hearing your insight and advise in the future.
