At the mercy of the AI
RE: At the mercy of the AI
I have a crash just after an auto save. This should mean that the rollback point is more than 30 mins old. Sigh.
I may try to stop all ships tomorrow, hoping the action of one of them crashes the game. A research completion is a likely suspect too, which is harder to stop, but not impossible. I am not sure the game goes angry on me if I force the AI on another project for a while.

focring the AI shouldn't make anyone angry, it's what we do in every game [:)]
we're all behind you, good luck
we're all behind you, good luck
...Igniting stellar cores....Recharging reactors...Recalibrating hyperdrives....
RE: At the mercy of the AI
I just say... Beware of the wrath of the research department. You get on their bad side, and next time you fire your counter measures.... boom, your ship explodes.
I had research/design on manual during my last game, so of course it is not a problem. I just hope that it is me and not a (more) AI controlled action that causes it.
Edit: Sigh, auto/manual it is so easy to get confused [:(]

keep going man this is great!!!
RE: At the mercy of the AI
Life goes on. Crash issues may be solved by letting the game rest. Of course I did not save after discovering this, so it is resting again. This is a nice time to put up some info. We may reach a paradox in time here, with actions undone, but here goes...
One more pirate base in the east, taken on the same trip as the previous one.
On arrival at the Dhayut capital, 38 ships are in build queue on their capital space port. It will be nice if I can kill it. First, some military ships.

Everything that does not flee, including the space port, dies with only shields hits taken by the home fleet. The capital ship was at some 10-20% when the space port died. Lots of Dhayut civilians are killed with some more military forces. Ships are chased towards the SW. Luckily the state department does not interfere with the space port almost dead this time.
Tired of stupid wars, the invasion fleet with 31 troops from their last target goes for the capital planet Eltes. Eltes got 11 defenders, Feeva the other colony in system got 2.
No more mr nice guy!
Bonus income is at 21k, cashflow just shy of 10k, and I make good money. Too bad the AI don't notice this.
And discovery of some ruin gives research bonus to advanced passenger transport, and enhanced crew system research is completed. Planetary Governance is next on the list.
A Buvu colony ship with military ships hanging around is found SE of my colonies by one of my gas mining spies.
It is a common problem that fleets run out of fuel while waiting, and a new guard arriving on a northern planet of the Dhayut find a medium space port under construction, as well as some 6 or more enemy destroyers. They prioritize blasting up the incomplete space port, and count their odds against the enemies. The conclusion is that they are underdogs, but could manage with focused fire. But as the first enemy destroyer dies, a Ketarov fleet lands on the same place, also with killing in there sights. And they are of course hunting Dhayut. One of my destroyers is damaged, and loses its hyper drive. Not that it does not enjoy killing some civilian ships that are too close.

Raider 4 on the central Buvu planet gets visitor, loses one destroyer and has another damaged. It finds yet another space port popping up, and kills it. At the same time, the Invasion fleet has landed its troops on Eltes.
Dhayut wants to end war. Don't accept, buggers!
Advanced area weapons are ready for deployment, weapon research moves on to tactical interceptors. Having very few fighter bays in the fleet (only the capital ship), we would rather see focus on something else. It is not like my space ports gets frequent visitors (they have yet to fire at anything).
Yet another pirate base in the east. Their nemesis, Raider 6, on the prowl again.
A strange tendency is observed. Those that I am at war with ends up lower on the power ranking on the diplomacy screen....
Tefny, my new easternmost outpust, is visited by a mortalen escort. 23rd fleet moves to system in the case other follows. The happiness bonus is from this planet, and if I were in charge I would build both space port and defensive bases here, even if the place is at negative 1k revenue. I consider it a huge empire boost on line with the rare spices (that I have not seen anything of).
Cashflow is only 3.6k negative, bonus income is at 58k. So close to getting things built!
A new Boskara nation, the Boskara Supremacy is discovered. They do not want to swap territory maps. Considering my reputation as nasty, that is not too strange.
Eltes falls to our ground forces, the Dhayut are short one capital. Two transports pick up troops here to dump on the other planet in the system, I want to leave forces on this planet so only two. A home fleet cruiser with good fuel status goes for a Dhayut gas mine a bit further north. The Home fleet is generally low on fuel.
Cashflows turns positive, and they straight away want to build a large space ports at both the former Weccarus capital Elfauf, and the recently conquered Eltes. Sure!
Dhayut want me to terminate trade with the Wekkarus. And yes, I checked, we are still at war with Dhayut.
Feeva, the colony that shares system with Eltes soon falls.
Cashflow is positive again, I wait for a space port in the southern town taken from the Buvu, or for a bunch of explorers/constructors...
The two Dhayut in the north have Wekkarus and Keratov populations, holding them is no problem in this war. The new capital Ploi is one of them, and has 10 troops, the other has much more. Ploi has a Wekkarus population. Invasion 2 goes for Ploi under doubt, there is a Kiadian resort base in this system, and I guess it will make state go after them. At least I know the location of quite a few of their systems after a territory swap during the days of better relations.
7 random ships of the Home Fleet is split into a separate fleet to refuel at the resupply ship to the north. This way the Home Fleet can both get refueled and protect the fledgling space port. I love shooting up space ports under construction, but I am not as fond of having my own blown up by a random arrival.
Issuwyn keeps asking for a disputed base. They must have given up on state department and hopes that I will overrule them. It doesn't happen, of course.
Elfauf space port is the one that is completed first. The build time seems short, there must be stores on the planets, or my game moves faster than usual as things are quiet and I don't pause much.
Eltes space port has 4320 shields and 1306 firepower. I am glad I don't have to kill it.
Ploi falls to the might of Invasion 2.
Some targets appearing around the world are attacked, and destroyers at my space ports starts to retrofit. Not that I am sure what is new. Better shields, maybe?
The new Dhayut capital is my old friend Ziltrus 3. It has 1 troop defending. A full troop transport on auto is in Varlenaar, my previous southern front and second colony established, and moves in for the kill.
Trendillu 3, the last known Dhayut colony got less troops now, and I have a fleet in the system. Have the rest of the troops been disbanded? 13 is still quite a lot when I don't want to empty my other conquests and no move towards them is made.
Ziltrus 3 is mine again. Trendillu 3 did not become the new Dhayut capital. Also, I have not seen trade links, so there is something out towards the west, I think. 4 colonies, according to the diplomacy screen. They have 36k GDP. I have 107K revenue from their former capital. No wonder they feel the need to reduce expenses by removing troops.
My fleets does not like resupply ships, they rather go a long way than refuel at them. They of course do as told with specific fuel orders. Maybe it is because the ship does not have enough fuel for the fleet? Or something?
I have not noticed build orders, but I opened the build order screen to make sure, and there was a pre filled request for two exploration ships. Sure!
I find an abandoned cruiser with 147 firepower and 650 shields. My latest destroyer design has 142 firepower and 540 shields. The conclusion is “retire for tech”.
Tactical interceptors are ready for use. They move on to high density alloys. That makes sense, considering they don't put armor on our ships.

Two new spaceports with long range scanners make themselves seen. The resupply ship that is not popular to use is seen left of the SW trade route. Ships would rather go to Urd Beneer, the colony much further north with a refueling symbol.
Invasion fleet is sent back home to be disbanded for the ships to refill with troops. They are not released in the SW to avoid those planets from being emptied of troops.
A Mortalen colony is found just NE of the two Aq colonies down south. Haakonish population, some 8 troops. A fortified bunker. Ouch. The bases in the system are haakonish, a medium space port is being built. Home fleet takes off in that direction. I am not really keen on taking this one, but I won't mind shooting it up.
The resort base at Ploi, my new NW frontier, is built on a caslon source. Grrr. Dhayut frigates appears, and just sit around. My destroyers are on a refueling trip so the system is empty. Two troop transports arrive. There are 30 defenders at home, including my elite 97th Boskaran Executioner at 24000 strength. And even the 46th Angry Hunting Party at 20750 which have seen quite an improvement from its meager starting level 15k lower. For some odd reason the Dhayut does not try to invade [:D]
The abandoned cruiser located gives a bonus to Hyper Slipstreaming when retired.
Issuwyn threaten with war over the same old contested base.
Aqoenia blockade a mining station next to my capital. Again. And it is not that long until it is lifted.
Every now and then gas mining or exploration ships are attacked by wildlife. I have not yet found time for bug hunting since my now dead capital ship killed a single kaltor of a swarm very early on.
I order extra troops in my southern cities of some size, and in my capital.
Boskara Supremacy (new guys) are quick to catch up to the lastest galactic fashion, and impose trade sanctions. My best friends are the Kennatar Hegemony, they are annoyed with me. The galaxy is a lonely, lonely place.
Fission mastery has been picked up as energy research. They seemed to not research anything for a while as the AI was confused by the free tech from the cruiser retirement.
Contrary to what may be the impression from above, I actually lose the odd ship. Some of my small fleets are replenished and may have more than 4 ships. A raiding fleet with 2 ships was a bit weak...
Boskara collective, the original boskara guys, lift their trade sanctions. I am so bad that even the Boskara can accept me.
The 25th fleet is on a merry chase to the northwest, following a vessel fleeing from the remaining Dhayut colony up there. They are about to run out of, but I am looking forward to see where they end up...
Home Fleet is sad to see that the aqs have already killed the space port they aimed for and gets an order to refuel. Meanwhile, the Aq capital has been found in that area.
Insulted that the Boskara lifted their trade sanctions on me, the Kiadians impose some instead.
I can see where the 25th are headed. None of my explorers have even been close...
I get messages of blockades that have ended. Not that I noticed them beginning. Including Eltes. Right, come try to blockade eltes, and try its 1306 firepower and host of fighters/bombers. Silly mechanism.
Planetary governance is under control, advanced medicine is up next. Which of the two former capitals will get the honor? Eflauf got more revenue, both are at about 66% corruption.
The 25th shoot up their target at the Boskara Supremacy capital of Helu 2. The system is shared with the Kiadians, so I suspect there is an invasion incoming. Helu 2 appears to have two space ports, both medium, which I find strange.
The supremacy is insulted and asks me to remove military forces from system. They are running on caslon fumes, so no big complaint from me.
And Distant Worlds crashes... Which seems to be a problem that solves it selves with a good rest. If the ftp server allow download, you can steal a peek at my save by downloading my crash file...
Two final images. One that shows the diplomacy display confirming that I am loved by all the galaxy. It also shows that my reputation has improved to dubious.
The other shows the galaxy map with explored systems shown. It is a nice illustration of my complaints with the department of exploration.
At this time I am bit unsure of what to do. Capture of the last known Dhayut system is in line, but I need troops, and am not keen to recycle the ones on my recent conquests. Having Eltes 2 rebel and having to fight my own LSP design would not be so fun (not that I am sure it is more scary than the one I killed).

RE: At the mercy of the AI
Crashing again. I must admit I consider stopping this game. I have captured two juicy planets in the south, and it did not exactly make me weaker. I got two new, large space ports, which gives me something that resembles space ports in each corner. (The SE lack one, but I don't think those colonies are that juicy, not that I monitor my colonies much with constant war).
The thing I fear are constant rebellions, empire split, etc, because the AI is not able to have a moment of peace. It appears to do a decent job at controlling population anger with tax adjustments, though. The two that rebelled were angry at being at war with their species.

RE: At the mercy of the AI
I went back to the earlier auto save, which admittedly was not that far behind, and it crashed at the same time. Stale game, and I stop playing it.
I already generated my new game which will not get an AAR. Much same settings. Slower research (190), variable clusters, and now my 9 opponents are expanding while I am starting. I am the gizuerans, and I feel dead. Luckily (?) I am right on the right edge, and the central galaxy is void of clusters. At least my back is free...
I will run by AI this time too, but do stuff like keep 3 constructors and 4 explorers minimum (once going), and I may put small space ports if stuff gets too bad.

RE: At the mercy of the AI
Shame crashes ruined yer game. Was loving this AAR. Hopefully it'll be fixed in the next patch to reduce the number of crashes. Great AAR though and you should maybe do more in the future.
You lost the game
RE: At the mercy of the AI
The crash is not the only one to blame. I could probably have gone further back, that is some 2-3 hours to my last manual save. The thing is, I was never threatened in this game. The only colonies lost were to rebellions.
Also, the two home worlds taken, and the very good mortalen planet in the south, was a very nice income boost. Even if a few empires were somewhat strong, I think my home fleet would eat them, and if not, I would just hire batches of 50 destroyers. And now I even had large space ports with lots of construction yards to build them fast on, both in the north and in the south.
I had a peek in the editor, and was actually amazed that the Issuwyn, the purpleish guys to my SW had a colony at the very north edge. Some explored more.
Starting now as the gizurean which are 'quite cautious' compared to the Atuuk 'very reckless' is that the Atuuk had one defensive base, while the Gizurean built 3 defensive bases as about the first thing to do in the game. They also seem to avoid torpedo tech like the plauge, which is not so great for early destroyer strength

RE: At the mercy of the AI
I have been bashing stupid AI, so I thought I should give some observations from playing a different race for a few hours. An image to discuss from:

So, this is blue vs blue, but the right side is me. Reasonably large colonies has received space ports, and I have not been in negative revenue yet. It has built some mining bases in the south, but not a gas mine. That is a weakness. Not that I have verified that there is a caslon source down there. No one like the gizureans, but the Atuuk has spammed me a couple of territory swap offers. This is a feature of their excessive friendliness.
The AI has kept 10 explorers since I got some size/wealth, and replenish them when I die. It has hired agents, and the first thing it did was to steal the territory map of the blue ones up left. It has provoked them with many spy missions, and they declared war.
See that halfway point? That is a very rich enemy regional capital. I have been visiting killing a defensive base. See those blue circles? Yes indeed, the AI has built no less than three monitoring stations covering that colony. The first one was killed, then two new ones was placed. And there are 3 def bases on my home world as mentioned, while the Atuuk only put one.
This one is cautious, I think that makes it put monitoring bases. So the lack of spying from the atuuk could also be racial, as this one hired two agents and spied with one quite early.
So...
The AI is weak at building gas mines spread around. It does not make sure colonies are within a certain range of one, and this range should be short.
The AI is good at building resort and research stations, it picks the bonus locations. It has been good at this in both games.
The Giz does not put torpedos on their destroyers. It does them no good... 35 firepower after a couple of tech upgrades. Bleh. And that AI up there is evil I tell you, the penalty for giving them a proper head start.
The monitoring stations warned about attack on a gas mine. The 1st fleet went there with its 35 destroyers, but could not save the base as it was focused on. Somewhat epic
So one fun thing about leaving AI in charge of spying, building and diplomacy, is that the game will play out more differently depending on race. If you manage all by yourself, the only difference is the race bonuses, the race mood only influences the game by reaction modifiers and population growth/bonus tech.

RE: At the mercy of the AI
hmm very interesting. Please please please consider doing an AAR in this game!! The different race/galaxy map would be extremely interesting. And it looks like you have a juicy rival in the form of dark blue to experience some epic battles with. One of my first ever games I played as the Teekan and although I was constantly getting attack from the Gizureans, it was a lot of fun. Partly becuase I was playing on a varied clusters map where the action seems to be a lot more focused.
This game is truly amazing. I think when you get farther into the galaxy you are playing it tends to crash more just because everything is in real time. This is why I do not understand why people complain about this game not being 3d. It would absolutely kill your computer. The graphics really work and I am partial to them anyways since they remind me of one of my fav. games of all time... EV Override!! [:)]
I know it is a lot of work doing an AAR, but honestly you are really good at it and if you do decide to do one, you can be assured I will be reading it!

RE: At the mercy of the AI
Interesting stuff about the different race AI. Could explain why I feel some races simply perform better under AI control than others...
I understand you perfectly about not feeling threatened by anyone when your empire becomes big enough...restarted quite a few games because of it and i'm still looking for a game that keeps being challenging even in the later phase.
I did try something similar to what you did to take a break from my stalling AAR game.. Tried to put some empires on "Old" expansion with an excellent homeworld while I gave myself and 9-10 other "cannon fodder" empires "expanding". A couple of decades in the game and for the moment I succeeded in creating a huge sluken empire that has started eating away at the whole galaxy, with 100 planets 80k military rating, two huge wimpy ones with mortalem and quameno with 60 planets and 5-10k military, and 2 averege boskara and zenox empires with 20k military...The Sluken in this game do look like they might hold out to be a challenge though, might want to give it a try.

RE: At the mercy of the AI
it takes a lot to go against crashes in order to make an AAR so I'll not put pressure but if you do it I'll cheer you right alongside RaffleSnaffle

Been following your AAR, a shame about crashes.
I haven't had any crashes since the final patch of the original DW. Prior to that I used to get lots though so even now out of habit I have auto-save set to every 10 minutes. I highly suggest setting auto-save to 10 mins even if your game is generally stable.
Also, really nice to see Diverse Worlds ships in an AAR [:)]

RE: At the mercy of the AI
I don't think the AAR game crashed even once before it met the nasty one. Usually I have a small selection on crashes, including bugs that kills my display but leaves the game running so that I can save (save AS...). Typical is a white mini map down right with a red cross.
Also, the auto save from 30 minutes earlier also crashes around the same time. Not a lot of different things happens though, AAR games run slower than others, for some reason. I may also have taken a small break during the 30 minutes, I am not sure.
Hm, maybe do something with those Gizzies. Patch the home world down in quality. Have my storm troops assault the department of ship design and put my guy as head manager. Use some opportunities to put a gun at the head of the leader of the department of construction to provide fuel supply and a few rare space ports (like one in the south in that image). Not to mention at least some explorers at all times.
I am not sure how this would work in a hive, though.
