slowing PO turn execution

Post by berto »

Is there some hidden option or configuration tweak that will slow PO turn execution?

One thing I've always disliked about TOAW is how fast the PO turn displays. Yes, the game pauses every now and then to show a Loss Report, but I'm referring to how fast the forces move on-map, and how quickly battles play out. It all happens so fast, in a blur, more rapidly than my tired old brain can follow.

After spending many, many minutes painstakingly planning and executing my move, it is jarring to see the PO play so quickly. I have no problem with how long or short a time the PO takes to "think" (although if taking more time makes it a better opponent, I'm all for that). I just don't want it to move and fight so fast!

One thing I especially like about War in the Pacific (Admiral's Edition, and before) is that you, the player, have near total control over turn and combat displays--how fast they unreel, and indeed whether they display at all.

So, how about some TOAW options like:
  • slow PO turn execution by 2X, 3X, ...
  • pause X milliseconds between on-screen counter movements
  • hitting spacebar (or like WITP:AE's ctrl-P) pauses the game
I know there are utilities that, at the OS level, slow down the computer. (That make old DOS games playable on today's super fast PCs, for instance.) There are also Windows settings to control CPU priority, etc. Has anybody used these to slow down turn execution in TOAW? Without subjecting the game to crashing?

For me, the journey's the thing, not the destination. I'm not impatient to win or finish the game. Enjoying the unfolding narrative is all important. Is there any practical way to slow-mo each TOAW "story"?

No, CAPS LOCK On or Off, even if Off, it's still too fast. I'd like the option to slow things down as much as I please. At least give me a (whenever) pause-game option.

Ok, just checking. Hitting 'spacebar' is already used, but left clicking in the window pauses the game. Another option to slow/increase speed is a good idea. It would allow players to tailor to their own eye/brain speed.

Left clicking doesn't do it for me. I can't get the game to pause (except, on occasion, bringing up a "Computer Player: Which force should the computer play" dialog box). I am referring to the PO turn execution. Maybe you are referring to something else?

Yeah, that's what I meant. It stops the PO's turn and also brings up that box. Not exactly what you are looking for, but I was just saying.

Like slowAnimation=Y in the Opart 3.ini file that's in the game's folder.

It isn't hidden, but I didn't bother surfacing it.

It does make movement slower.

Let me know if it works or if it's too slow. The shift (or caps locks) key speeds things up.
