New Public Beta - v1.03 beta 6

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

New Public Beta - v1.03 beta 6

Post by Andrew Loveridge »

Hello All,

There is a new version of the latest Public Beta for War in the East available in the Members Club. It adds Interdiction battles, improves handling of unit experience, and has a number of fixes. We hope for this to be the last version before making the Official Update. This is a Beta, so let us know about you experiences with it. Here is a list of changes, with links to the previous updates.

V1.03 Beta 6 – February 20, 2011
New Features and Rule Changes[/b] [ul] 1. Added an editor function – SET ALL CITY SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS. It sets all requirements based on the existing industry and production percentage. Also supplies cities to support first production turn. 2. Partisan supply drops are now hidden if FOW is on. 3. Formula Change - Slightly reduced the experience drop when ground elements received replacements. The higher the average experience of the elements, the less the decrease that can be expected. 4. Empty ground element slots that have the same type as other elements in the unit will be deleted. This will lead to more uniform divisions with higher experience. 5. Introduced a new kind of battle called Interdiction that can be shown on the Commander’s report list of battles and also as on map battle sites. Friendly interdiction attacks are not cleared at the start of the logistics phase, so you can now view the interdiction attacks that occurred during your opponent’s turn. 6. Added more factors to the interdiction attack routine, such as terrain, range to the supplied enemy, unit average experience, unit size and a morale roll.
Bug Fixes
    1. On map defending CV values for units in Swamp and Heavy Forest hexes were being calculated as if their terrain fort value was +1 when in reality their terrain fort value was +2. This caused the displayed defending CV to be undervalued. This was a display bug only, and has been fixed. 2. Fixed a bug where global supply and fuel stocks were not calculated correctly. 3. Fixed a bug where captured equipment once in units could be produced (to be used as additional replacements). 4. Fixed the AI so that it now pays the increased rail costs for Soviet factory evacuation. 5. Fixed a bug where the hex popup text could get stuck with static text, ex. “View this unit”, “View this air unit”, Show detailed aircraft change window”. 6. Fixed a bug with attacks over rivers that could cause negative disruption. 7. Fixed a bug where elements with 0 ready elements could retain disruption.
Data and Scenario Changes
    1. Go145C aircraft changed from a Recon type to a Tactical Bomber (this appears not to have been changed in an earlier patch as we had thought). 2. Set supply/fuel/resources/oil requirements for all scenarios.

In patching an existing 1.03b5 GC, the Go145cs are still recons. Great game!

Yes, data needs restarts.

Why was the AP cost for forming a Soviet corps from 3 x divs (or 2 x div and 1 x bde) increased from 10 AP to 20 AP in beta 5?  Has it been reversed in this beta?

As the Soviets in the 1942 campaign, moving my army from defense to offense in the winter was hellishly difficult.  It took 2-3 months to build up enough APs to convert the necessary static units to ready, and combine enough divs into corps to have a decent amount of hitting power in the front line.  Now it's impossible -- from October I spend the entire winter using APs to build up corps, and can finally go onto the offensive in Feb or March, way too late to have a decent winter offensive.

OK, did some digging and it was a change in beta 3. I see it goes back to 10 APs in 1943, however I think that's too late for the Soviets to have any kind of winter offensive in the 1942 campaign (sure it helps the Germans survive the 1941 campaign but I've been playing 42 as I think it's a more even start).

Can I suggest that it goes back to 10 APs in September 1942 instead of January 1943?

Having corps is not necessary to perform an offensive. I am perfectly capable of going to the offensive in selected sectors in august 1942 without any corps. Sure, corps helps to concentrate combat power, but I feel that in 1942 the Soviet offensive capability was mostly only able to overcome relatively weak German or Axis allied forces. I think it plays out about right the way it is now. And if I really want those corps, I pay the cost of 20 AP.

Edit: This might be a useful discussion, but I realize maybe it should be in another thread..

The AP cost change was to decrease the capability of the Red Army in 1942; people were complaining it was too strong and their Axis side couldn't go on the offensive as well as historical results.

The downloads in the Members Section really need an overhaul. 9 times out of 10, the download on my connection gets cut off before the file is completely downloaded. Maybe I'm the only one this happens to, in which case ignore my comment. [:(]

It is plain FTP... this should not happen...

BTW, what browser you use (i.e. have you tried other browsers to download the file)?

Google Chrome. I think I've tried with Firefox a couple of times too, but the result was the same.

Hmmm... strange...

The link is just plain FTP:

ftp://_:_@ftp2.matrixgames.com/GGWarint ... 3Beta6.exe

(the "_" is temporary "username:password")

Have you, possibly, tried using FTP program (or FTP plugin for some browser - the FireFox has it for example)?
