Limited attack
I played a few games and I would have to say that its a fine job done with the game from all of the developers. I guess the tooltip is annoying at times but also helpful at times. I was wondering if you can do a limited attack anymore with the new game without going to default rules?
At times, I want to attack but not advance into the hex.
Thanks
PS Anyone up for an email game pm me

RE: Limited attack
You can turn the tooltip "off" by setting the play->player options->tooltip show setting to a high number and the tooltip hide to some low number, say 5 or so.ORIGINAL: demjansk

Yeah sure.....I use that kind of attack all the time. Just do a right click and choose limited attack from the popup menu.ORIGINAL: demjansk

Here's my tool tip settings:
EDIT: I just re-read your post about "default" rules. Oops.

"limit losses" attacks don't prevent you from advancing into another hex. Even "minimise losses" attacks don't do that. In fact, there has never been an attack option in TOAW preventing your units from advancing.

Page 61 of the manual:
"Attacking units participate fully, and may advance into the location if the enemy retreats. Units
conducting a Limited Attack add half their Strength to the Attack, suffer only half the losses they
would in a normal Attack, and will not advance into the location after combat."
Right click on a unit in the main view, or the attack planner, and select "limited attack" instead of "attack," than select your loss settings.

RE: Limited attack
Right, I forgot about this one. With the new options, it's hidden away in the attack planner now...
I thought demjansk was referring to minimise/limit/ignore settings, which have nothing to do with preventing your units from advancing.

RE: Limited attack
I must have been having a senior moment when I replied. Of course I meant to say limited attack. A right click will present a menu from which you can choose a limited attack.

Yes, it did!
That's why I wrote it was impossible. I played TOAW a few years ago, then had a loooong break, and came back just in time for the latest patch. It changed a few things here and there, and one of the changes is that this feature went underground [:D] It's no longer in the main view; it's only available through the attack planner. That's why I completely forgot it ever existed...[:(]

Kameraden, just switch to the default classics and all the bits'n pieces are there were you used to find them. Main game screen window, options, default options, default classics. done!

RE: Limited attack
With an ongoing 3.4 game in progress, I just opened up my alternate 3.2 installation. Comparing 3.2 and 3.4 side-by-side, I can confirm that the contextual right-click menus have changed considerably.
I won't go into detail here about what I see. I leave comparing 3.2 with 3.4 as an exercise for the reader.
I will say: In general, the 3.4 interface improves over 3.2, and it's great to have options, but...
There are now so many different interface customizations, Game/Player/Default Options, Updated vs. Classic; Opart 3.ini tweaks, etc. -- with so many different permutations and combinations.
This is a BIG can of worms, folks. People are going to come here asking questions, and the unqualified answers might confuse and mislead. Person A with interface setup X will advise Person B with possibly quite different interface setup Y. What A sees, B won't see. And vice versa. In a sense, considering just the interface, we no longer play the same game, rather "berto's TOAW" vs. "larry's TOAW" vs. "marjur's TOAW" vs. ...
A bit chaotic. Lots of head scratching. Made worse by our hazy recollections (like Larry's "senior moments") of What Was interfering with What Now Is.
Sigh. What are we going to do? Except muddle through...

And, furthermore, even under Updated Graphics, you can still get the popup, just like before. Just hold the right button down till whatever delay has been set in the Advanced Rules page expires and there it will be.
If we could just get folks to read the Whats New - specifically section IX, item 40.

Anyway, we all of us now know how to access Limited Attack -- from within the Attack Planner. Good enough, whatever works...

How about artillery units with 1 hex range ?
Is there a reason they can't carry out limited attacks ?

Oops. I meant to say "Updated Defaults", not "Graphics". This has nothing to do with graphics. Now, in the case of "Classic Defaults", the delay is automatically zero, so you get the popup immediately, no matter how fast you right click.

It depends on their makup. If more than half their AP strength comes from ranged equipment, then they will automatically bombard at one-hex range. They can't attack at all. If less than half, then they won't bombard, but will attack instead. Then there should be a player choice of Limited Attack vs. Full Attack.
Giving the players a choice whether to bombard or attack with such units was too complicated at the time. But we hope to address it soon.

You can also see by the cursor look wether the unit attacks or bombards.

Correct, except it's not exactly the cursor. It's the movement path - and you need to set those to "Floating".
