That was the Mandalay garrison. Until a few days before, they had been sitting in garrison, training.

My point is not that they're inferior--which I accept--but rather than the game engine loves pure armoured units and produces really weird combat results when they're involved in a battle. In reality, the armour would have controlled the road (out to the tree-line on each side) to the first solid roadblock covered by enough AT to kill tanks as fast as they roll into the kill zone. In a naval battle, that's called 'crossing the T'.

Harry - I've had armoured units wiped off of the board when they were left alone and hit by good balanced infantry units. The killer here for you was:

morale(-), experience(-), supply(-)

Essentially, you had badly trained, badly commanded units that were fighting for a foreign power they hated, and were also out of ammo and out of food. The result reflects them throwing away their weapons and running off into the bush, leaving their second rate Brit officers to face the Japanese.

If you had a Brit Infantry unit there with equivalent firepower to the combined total of those Burmese units the Japanese armoured column would have been decimated.

It's the same thing in China - the units there are miserable, under-equipped and untrained at the start. Build some of them up for six months in Chungking and give them decent leaders and they will stop Japanese columns cold.

You're trying to fight the war with 1941/early 1942 units and expecting late 1943/early 1944 results. There were good reasons why the Allies weren't able to stop the Japanese on the ground in 1941 and much of 1942, and the Game reflects those reasons fairly well.

In my Allied pbem I pulled out those Burmese units and left them to build up in India for months and months and months. When they were finally built they were still miserably weak and useless for anything other than backwater garrison work.

The core of that force consisted of two Indian brigades.

Night bombardment of Koepang. Day air actions follow.

Heavy Japanese airstrikes on Iloilo.

Japanese carriers covering a landing at Tulagi spot an Allied SAG off the Rennell Islands. Japanese air strikes sink an American destroyer, damage two more, and gain torpedo hits on three cruisers. The four Allied CVTFs are not engaged. Next turn could be interesting.

The combined RN and USN carrier fleets move up to greet the Japanese carriers off Tulagi.

The Koepang landing was repulsed.

Period."

Four destroyers and three CLs got into the invasion fleet at Tulagi. What more can I ask?

Landings at Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Roxas (Philippines)

I need to decide whether to form a couple of SAGs and send them in against the landing force at Tulagi. The Japanese have the Akagi, Kaga, Junyo, and Hiyo covering the landing, while I have three Yorktown carriers and an Invincible. I have superiority in surface ships, but his Betties can reach Tulagi. I can come up within 2 hexes of Tulagi, within Betty range, but I only have 93 fighters and he probably has about the same number on his carriers. His landing is in trouble. I have about 60 land-based aircraft at Ndeni (a level 4 airfield). I'm inclined to remain outside Betty range, reinforce Ndeni, and challenge him in the air.

Comments?

Always good to remain outside LBA range. But commenting only on the surface component.

If you wish to hit at night (or have a chance of it) and be out of range in daylight even if you do not make contact:

- Put the SAG on Patrol.
- With or without React as you see fit.
- Make the first patrol point be where you want to engage (Tulagi in this example?).
- Make the second Patrol point be way back out of LBA range. The point is that if they do not engage tehy won't be hanging around.

I wanted to pass through his invasion TF--sowing confusion--and reach his carrier TF. I nearly made it--came up a hex short. Lost a cruiser and four destroyers, but most of the losses were at the end. Nashville is OK and Honolulu is anchored in Thousand Ships Bay fighting fires. I disrupted his landing, sank a bunch of merchies and a destroyer, and sent him packing. His carriers are currently headed back to Rabaul and the landing TF is headed towards Ponape. I would have done a lot better except that the weather was nasty and most of my air strikes failed to connect. Once he clears the area, I'll bring my CVTFs north to cover the extraction of Honolulu. I have 99 F4Fs, which should be able to deal with the Betties. I had previously covered a transport group into Port Moresby at a distance of two hexes, and the Betties at Rabaul stayed quiet.

He's learned in a series of battles I'm not afraid to use gunships aggressively against his carriers.

Yes, I like it!

My style is to go further and aggressively hunt the KB where ever it exposes itself to attack. At the beginning of the war, it has a very weak screen (2 BB, 2 CA, 9 DD).

I'll need to extract Honolulu once the fires are stopped.

Lashio captured.

Otherwise quiet.

Generally quiet. Japanese shock attack in China and air raids by both sides on Tulagi. The Japanese visit to Tulagi involved 32 A6Ms and 65 Netties. I'm inclined to bring the Allied TFs up to a couple of hexes from Tulagi to provide air cover for the Honolulu as it heads to Noumea. Here's the question for you Allied fan boys: How much of a risk would that be?

I think I'll have the Japanese landing force fully disabled in about ten days to two weeks at the current rate of bombing. The garrison is a reinforced MAU, which should be able to hold the current Japanese force indefinitely, but the game engine usually overestimates the effects of a small combat power superiority.

I just got back from two weeks isolated from the internet in Crete.

May 14/15 1942

Fast half of the KB works over Koepang. Slow half lurks near Rabaul.

Iloilo falls to a Japanese division.

Pingsiang falls to a Japanese army.

Air battles over central Burma as Burcorps retreats to a defensive line from Akyab to Imphal to Myitkyina to Paoshan.

Japanese forces continue creeping south through the central Philippines islands. Now Bacalod is under air attack.

Fast KB finally notices my convoy routing between Darwin and Davao. Also hits Ambon.

Netty strike on Milne Bay garrison (one company).

Amphibious landing at Milne Bay. (My four CVTFs in the Coral Sea happen to be headed in that direction...)

Java cleared of Allied units.

The RN has a tradition to uphold.

This will be an interesting turn. I'll have four CVTFs and about 200 land-based aircraft within attack range this coming turn.

May 18/19 1942

Day 2:

I sent out search aircraft both night and day. Japanese amphibious assault at Dumaguete. SS-34 torpedoes Okinoshima. Japanese LCU at Milne Bay gets stomped by four CVTFs.

Tulagi garrison sorties against the Japanese infantry regiment on the island but is repulsed. I guess I have to bomb them for a week or two.
