June 4/5 1942

The KB shows up out of the blue near Rossel Island. 136 A6Ms attempt to intercept two B-17Es and fail. Five Allied CVTFs move to intercept.

Harry - the Zeros fail in which way - they fail to intercept, or they intercept and fail to shoot down the B-17Es? What was the altitude of the B-17Es? Did they hit anything?

Thanks -

FYI, Ian covered this a while back. The numbers on the combat report are the totals, not the number that engage. He indicated that for a couple of planes only a small number of fighters from the CAP would have actually been detailed to engage.

Okay, so 2 groups of 3 fighters each intercepted and likely damaged the Forts. It was good enough to distract the bombers from their targets.

I'll take that any day. [;)]

Thanks for the details!

Quiet turn.

Japanese transports approach Tulagi behind the cover of the KB positioned halfway between Rossel and Rennell Island.

My opponent's comment: "I thought that you were west of Ndeni. Maybe you are at Noumea, refueling like me three days ago at Rabaul". Actually, last turn I was off Koumac letting a UK CVTF join up. This turn I'm lurking off Luganville. My next move, I'll move back to off Koumac. I want him to move at faster than 9 hexes a turn to be able to launch. If I can pull him to within 6 hexes, my SAGs can react and engage, and my carriers can then hit him afterwards.

The Combined Fleet seems to be concentrated at Rabaul. The Allied carriers are SE of Tulagi. Plans are for the carriers to visit Noumea and resupply, then move into the Coral Sea to cover convoys to Port Moresby. Once those are completed, move back East to cover operations against the Japanese in the Eastern Solomons. RN battleships are moving to Perth to cover operations in the eastern DEI. USN Battle Fleet preparing to pay a visit to the Mandates. Divisional landings being prepared for Tulagi, Lunga, and Kwajalein.

Almost entirely air operations.

Note that you have to keep the fuel flowing to the South Pacific, or you run out quickly!

Note added: my friends in the KB are coming out to visit beautiful Port Moresby. At least I know where they're operating. My CVTFs are refitting in Noumea.

KB visits the Coral Sea. No sign of transports.

Tojos operating out of Shwebo or Mandalay to protect the tanks in Myitkyina. Probably need to be taken down a notch.

The Japanese Combined Fleet really, really stomps on Port Moresby. I'm headed in that direction with resupply and reinforcements, but the worst damage is the air losses. But I destroyed a bunch of Nells! Note the level of damage in the reports. The current status of the base is 96 runway damage, 100 service damage, and 7 port damage--about a week to clean up. (I have 66 engineers and 13 engineering vehicles.) I see no sign of a landing. I'll send two or three CVTFs to discourage follow-ups by individual TFs.

Here are the records: can you spell over-kill?

He's landing at Port Moresby. Evidentally my minefield (80 mines) does a little damage. I continue my air build-up in China and Burma. His diplomats indicate he intends to take Timor and Mindanao using surface forces and invites me to stop them. I've been running supply into both--I could reinforce Mindanao with bombers and fighters via Ambon. The Eastern Fleet is redeploying to Perth, with Darwin the forward base, their goal to engage his SAGs.

The landings at PM continue. His bombardment TFs appear to be out of ammo, so only the airstrikes do significant damage. Supplies are getting lower. I expect they're getting lower for him, too. Hyuga was mined. Apparently my cruisers sank one of his older battleships at Milne Bay, so he's down to nine.

He's pulling out of the position above Sian where I had stalled his advance.

The first attack is a classical Division against smaller units. I completely stopped using non armored bdes or smaller against a division. Neither attack nor defense (if possible). In addition the AIF Inf squads are not the strongest (only 17 soft attack) which may account for the losses too. (or did you already upgrade them to AIF 42). In addition the disruption kicks in at combat but does not kick in that heavy when AV are calculated, might be a reason too.

The second combat is a little strange. You get a very low adjusted AV with fort and terrain bonis. So the leaders and experience might have kicked in quite a lot (how is the supply situation). Losses in general are not that exceptional, especially if you count the enemy unit with higher xp. For me XP does drastically influence the losses you take during combat.
