Cleaned up most of the pockets in rear areas and destroyed another 5 Panzer, 2 Pnz Gren, and 27 Infantry divisions. Germany is down to 1.7 million men. 370 miles to Berlin, 20 miles to Budapest. Only mud can save him now.

Armaments are beginning to be a concern; only 3500 above weekly production in the pool.

Also, I now have 50 squadrons of fighters with no replacements. (P39Q and Yak7b). The auto-upgrade doesn't seem interested in converting any of them either. I think it only follows the designated upgrade path, it converts 3 or 4 IL2M to IL2M3s every turn. But it won't upgrade squadrons with no production and 0 in the pool. I guess I'll have to spend some AP during the mud season.

Warsaw liberated

Post by Mike13z50 »

There were only 53k armaments in the pool at the start of the turn, so I disbanded all 5 of the Rifle Corps in the 3rd Baltic Front, as well as two of the Army HQ from same. Also used the merge function to absorb 4 Rifle Divisions into understrength Corps. I wish I could turn off the UVS biplanes. You can't transfer production in the 44 scenerio.

Warsaw was captured by the 1st Guards Tank Corps, and formed a nice pocket near BrestLivtosk.

Small turn, only 70k casulties.

Only one Front is over CP now, and I'll probably let them set the rest of the war out rather than spend the AP to get them down. Now I can start putting leaders in.

Budepest fell this turn, Hungary should surrended next turn.

Took out another 14 German divisions, only 1 panzer this time. 160,000 casualities.

Armaments bounced back above 100k due to the disbands, I'm still short 30k trucks, I'll start staticing the 1st Belorussian as the reach lvl 2 entrenchment. War is over for them.

End Turn 15

Post by Mike13z50 »

I think it is all over but the marching. He is down to 1.6 million, all the minors are gone, and I've pocketed over 20 divisions this turn. Most of his remaining manpower is probably in HQ, Airbases, and SU. Everytime a divison shows up I just surround it with six units and march on. The tanks are just flipping hexes for the infantry to march through. Rail heads are around 10 hexes behind the advance.

I staticed almost the entire 1st Belorussian Front this turn, that is the front that is overcap.

Did an entire front line trace this time to show how few German combat units are in the field.

2 Late?

Post by Mike13z50 »

I guess I tempted fate saying it was all over but marching into Berlin. Mud came the next turn and lasted into November (playing random). In hindsight I should have kept marching forward during the mud, but I hate all the fatigue gain for moving in mud. So I pretty much stood pat, except for railing the 1st and 2nd Baltic Fronts forward after they cleaned up by Leningrad.

Have disbanded tons of stuff, but still negative trucks. I disbanded AA regiments this turn, which only use 20 trucks, but I have 385 of them. Took AP down to 45.

6 turns to take Berlin and 37 more VP. Going to be tight in the snow, very costly to cross rivers until they freeze. Come on Blizzard!

Enough trucks

Post by Mike13z50 »

You would not believe how many troops I've disbanded, let alone the ones on static to finally balance the truck deficit. 5 turns to go, need 28 points and take Berlin.

Zero

Post by Mike13z50 »

Attack of the 0 strength SS. I've seen this a couple of times lately. As soon as a new piece moves next to him it disappears. Until then it exerts ZOC.

Oder Line

Post by Mike13z50 »

I don't think I'm going to make it in time for a decisive victory. The Oder Line is tough, especially in winter. The Oder itself is a major river, which you almost never can attack across in blizzard unless it is frozen. You need at least 13 movement points as infantry to Hasty attack. You might be able to deliberate with 16, but I never had the right guys on the river when they rolled a 16, heck I got lucky to have 13 on a cav. There was a 1 strength sitting across from him, I hit it with about 12 units of artillery and an air strike and retreated him. Pushed two infantry that were adjacent across.

Next turn the infantry cleared left and right and I brought another 4 across. You have to have the HQ adjacent to supply units across an unfrozen ice clogged river.

I've got a bunch of tank units coming up from the south, but he's carpeted it with 1s. With extra movement costs for winter/crossing rivers only getting 3 or 4 hexes a turn, then he throws a bunch more ones at me.

It is an interesting battle.

No Decisive Victory for me

Post by Mike13z50 »

Sitting on my thumb during the mud doomed my chances. Couple more turns, I'll post again with final results.

Last gasp of the Third Reich

Post by Mike13z50 »

11 Jan 1945

Finally past the last barriers of the Oder Line. 2nd Guards Army (V. Yushkevich commanding) is in the suburbs of Berlin. The war will be over soon.

The Oder line is really a tough nut to crack. The Oder itself is a Major River, south of the Oder you have three parallel minor rivers one after another, then south of that you have mountains. It is an interesting tactical problem.

I had to squeeze out two fronts as the area of operations squeezed down. Need 4 VP and Berlin (which should cover it). Notice how little of territory he still holds, and I'm still at 43 points.

West edge of the map is about 4 hexes to the left.

Those air units not getting replacement planes are using planes that hit the end of their upgrade path.
The Q version was the last of the P-39.

But according to data in the 1941 grand campaign lend lease on the P39Q continues through December 1944. Currently you get NO lend lease equipment in the 1944 campaign (starts June 22 1944).
I posted in the tech support forum and the developers are going to correct it in a future patch.

7th Guards Cavalry Corps of 2nd Guards Army (V. Yushkevich commanding) captures Berlin. The war is over.

180-1 odds were a bit anticlimactic, I wondered what artillery piece had the honor to be the last to give its "life" for Mother Russia. 82mm mortar. The 3 tanks must have been disabled.

Its been fun, I hope you've enjoyed reading. I'll have some final thoughts on lessons learned after I've had a chance to reflect.
