There's a largish pocket west of Minsk and I'm afraid those guys are all write-offs and I'm doing a circle-the-wagons kind of thing to make
the suspense last longer.

We Bolsheviks who fight under the banner of Lenin do NOT just circle the wagons. We confront the fascists at opportunity, even when surrounded. Axis rail lines are demolished to impede the enemy's advance into the Rodina.

I expect to have the Southern and Southwestern Fronts organized, but not for a few turns. I've picked out some units with higher morale, generally at or above 45 from the area so they can form up under 16th Army. That will be my first army to work on training up under a good leader with good support units.

It's only turn 1 but I'm thinking Far is off to a good start. He captured Leningrad in turn 3 once. Yeah I'm that bad a player so far.

Um........I railed in some reinforcements to start forming a lilne at the Luga River. In my earlier games Far was already up to the Luga
by this time so he's going easier on me this time. Maybe Leningrad will be safe this time.

I'm planning on having Northwest hold the northern flank and the Leningrad front will be to the east of Pskok I guess. Yeah, I know it's
backwards from what it should be but I thought I'd use the guys that are here and ready to be used rather than wait even one more turn.
Soviet troops can only rearrange so quickly and I need them to be useful NOW.

I was in the middle of transfering SB-2's from the Moscow area to the west front line air bases when the game froze up on me.  I had to invoke the task manager
to end the task ( WITE ).  So I'm going to start over with Far's moves and recreate as much as I can where it was when the program crashed.  Some things might
be different this second time.

AGN area I think you should have screened more. It would not have stopped him, but you have given the infantry a clear path. You could have used the troops south east of Lake Ilmen to slow him down some. No big deal. You want to try and hold Leningrad past turn 10 to keep his panzers away from Moscow area.

AGC and AGS moves all look good.

tidbits.

I'm starting to understand the concept of the game finally. I was so used to TOAW's way of fighting I tried that way in WITE too and
it didn't work. You must understand that I'm not all that smart either.

I would suggest to rail up the best troops from the south to Leningrad. The terrain there is better for you and maybe you can delay PG4 panzers so they have less time to support AGC after Leningrad falls.

Larry dont loose sight of those spearheads keep them locked down! even if you have too loose a few ponies to do it, its wroth the price for the motherland!

I don't tend to agree with that strategy. You don't lose a few ponies, over the summer campaign you lose a lot doing that consistently. If there is an opportunity in the early going to cut off a panzer supply route, that works. But I tend to want a respectful distance from those guys and deploy troops in depth. The more friendlies that get gobbled up, the more progressively difficult it becomes to maintain that depth. My $.02.

Pelton is quite right about the lack of depth with AGN. That was the first thing I noticed in looking at Larry's save. But this is the sort of thing I know he is going to get better at as we move along.

I'm a big believer in keeping zocs on the German, myself. But odds are good that whatever is being used in picket duty won't be coming back, so the trick is to use disposable units in this duty. This includes stuff like NKVD regiments, AT brigades, para brigades, low morale rifle divisions that are survivors of turn 1 from NW and W Fronts, etc. You do have some trash units.

A picket line can slow down the landsers and separate them from the panzers...or conversely, irritate the German to the point where he starts diverting mobile units away from his main thrust to clear out the trash. It complicates life for the German. It's also mostly a 1941 thing, although tank brigades can also do this job in 1942+ (you get way more of these things than you need or can support.)

This is my take on defending as the Soviets as well. Your goal is to try to always put some bodies on the German mobile units. You'll destroy more tanks by attrition than you will in straight-up combat. If you can keep ZOC's around the panzer's you can also increase his supply path MP's needed to get to his panzers, which will lower supply deliveries and hence his available movement. Keep him tired and mired...be as much of a PITA as you can.

I left the door open at Pskov and now Far is approaching Leningrad on turn 3 and the game is lost.  Leningrad will fall in turn 5 and the Panzers will head to Moscow and take that and then he will isolate and kill my entire army.  Oh well.  But let's keep playing just to see what happens next.

I isolated one of Far's spearheads. Too late though, Smolensk industry ( if there was any there ) is gone already.
