Wanted: Optometrist

Post by Attack Condor »

Just finished scenario 1 for the first time, and I lost 2211 - 1883 (losing two carriers tends to have that effect) - one incident in particular was a bit funny - for about half a turn :(

On about May 7, a Mavis pilot's scouting report was displayed "sighted: 1 CV". This was approximately 150 miles NNE of Buna. I smiled to myself picturing a pilot suffering the after effects of too much saki - mistaking the periscope of my submarine for the flight deck of a carrier.

The smile vanished when a strike launch message was displayed from the same hex. Lo and behold, the Yorktown (the Lex was already on her way home after being torpedoed) and her eight DDs were seeing the sights (possibly making a Navy recruitment video?) Needless to say, she was pounced upon in a hurry and shortly was sliding gracefully beneath the waves.

So I got out my glasses and re-read the part in the manual about "react to enemy" - and was reminded of the line from "Jaws"...why are we following the shark out to sea?"

A smile on my face...back to the training table. :)

The lesson that keeps on Giving

Hi, Wonder if we should run a poll seeing how many of us were taught with the same lesson. I'm guessing anyone who has played more then 10 hours of UV has learned the "react to enemy" rule. OK for surface TF's watching a friendly base. Very dangerous for Aircombat TF.

Successfully and unsuccessfully I might add. The long-range Japs make it difficult to maneuver into strike range sometimes, especially if he's making a conscious effort to stay at 8-10. Having the AI react into range can even up the odds a bit. Of course, it is an orifice-tightening order to give, no doubt.

I'm certain some of the experienced players know of better ways to get off a good lambasting on flighty Japs.

Speaking of which, does anyone else here play the Japs at 8-10 as much as possible? I just can't abide the massive destruction the Kates take when they torp bomb. Oh, they can do serious damage, no doubt, but if they don't, it's 3 days before you can strike again there are so many damaged planes.

I also am coming to the determination that Nells are for ASW, period. The replacement rate is so low that it just isn't worth it, IMO. The only time I naval attack is when I've spotted a juicy transport TF and there aren't any surface forces around. They and their Betty friends can really plunk AP's.

One thing I think would help with this is a cycle through Task Forces button like the cycle through land bases, so you could find those wayward TFs.
