It is a Castor Troy AAR. It is where he rants and raves about things. It is part of what makes it so entertaining.

Wa

I think so as well. AAR hijacking only with permission of the owner and, each one has his own way of posting.

Good luck on your war, CT.

an unescorted Val strike shows up and what happens? Many of the high morale KB bombers TURN BACK due to not having an escort... grrr...

High morale, perhaps, but not crazy! [;)]
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Castor -

I realize that you've got your security-month-lapse in place, but I would be very interested in knowing what you might try differently this time, particularly in the first year. You have a much better idea of the capabilities of the Game this time around, so do you have new ideas that you want to try out?

(I've never had the nerve or time to start another Allied pbem, although I did get a chance to start a second Japanese pbem almost a year after my first one, and I definitely did things differently in that second start.)

Thanks in advance -

no need to apologise at all and feel free to post as much as you want here. I just think that we completely misunderstand each other. The rant (one of the two in the initial post [:D]) was aimed at the fact that a majority lately seems to say the Japanese are nerfed in every aspect which I just can not see and in my example the initial strike actually sunk 4 of my BB and putting the rest in such a bad state that they won't see action until the end of the war (if I don't send them out with suicidial major flt trying to get them to the West Coast). And while saying the Japanese are so nerfed this goes in conjunction with "a second or third strike will shred KB's airwings due to murderous flak" which I also can't see at all (mind you this is a Babes campaign, not stock, so flak should be even stronger), not even when the enemy attacks at an altitude only halve of the real life attack height. This is what the rant is aimed at, at the rants about the Japs being so nerfed which I can't see. People seem to usually forget that "only" two BB were a total loss in real life as WITP's outcome in many aspects seem to have replaced our knowledge about what really happend. Compared to WITP the Japanese may be nerfed but compared to real life we are still in a 100% fantasy world in terms of Japanese abilities and I am not saying this is bad (it's a game) but I do say that I feel totally annoyed by the ongoing attempts that try to justify the Japanese abilities with realism - which cleary is not.

well, different opponents but still the same map, same important regions and the same starting position of your troops will probably not change my overall strategy. Don't want to take away too much but bluebook turned out to be a very experienced guy that knows how to advance insanely fast which will cause some changes in my supply lines but there are still the same plans on what to do which is either advancing onto the SRA or advancing on Japan while not losing Australia, India or China. Doesn't sound like a great plan I know, but that's the goal. [:D] As in all my games so far, I really don't care much about the Pacific, doesn't mean I wouldn't attempt an offensive there but fighting 15000 miles away from critical areas is something I am not really keen on. With so many games played, I think it's not a new war winning strategy you pull out of your hat but more a methodical tactical approach.

Tactically I think I have had quite a good way (boring but effective), focussing on a base that can be built up to level 9 airfields and lay waste around it, move on, rinse and repeat. The first year will be of course mainly see me building up my positions while I try not to fight with my troops dispersed as this would mean the enemy can pick them off one by one while not suffering any real losses moving like a vacuum cleaner. Plan is again to build strongholds that are strong enough to cause the enemy some trouble, even if the Japanese can bring in 3000 av and take more or less every stronghold at some point, it will take time and it will cause losses to the enemy which will take even more time to recover from those losses. Having strongholds of course can lead to those strongholds being bypassed but this is something I am aware of and bypassing all strongholds won't be possible or will lead to enough Japanese units being bogged down to siege the strongholds that the offensive capability of the available rest won't be as strong as the Japanese would like it to be.

Are you using the new patch? As far as I know there is a new feature which causes severe fatigue on fighter pilots flying sweeps/CAP over 75% of their max altitude. It really seems to have evened out the stratosweep as when the initial dive is over the sweepers get chopped up in the dogfight.
Also I have never found the stratosweep to be that effective against a layered CAP. Sure you get the initial kills and then the sweepers get bounced by the higher CAP groups and it evens out.

yeah, we're running the latest official patch, used patches that had this feature in my earlier game too. From my experience the new fatigue feature is more a problem for the Cap, because you have to fly Cap every day and if you want to have fighters high up too (to meet the inevitable high sweep) then this will cause you more a problem than the sweeper because the sweeper can rest, Cap can't.

Still, I think high alt combat should be hampered far more, forcing it into realistic heights. This is where the routines work very well, at realistic heights with normal numbers involved. But go tell a PBEM player to come in at 10000ft to achieve a 1:1 kill rate if he can get a 3:1 (or whatever) coming in at 40000ft. [:D]

[:@][:@] I ordered my two CV to intercept the expected Wake invasion as I was sure KB would stay long enough around Pearl so my CV would be safe but hey, of course my CV ended up one hex to far away (7) to launch a strike against the invasion TF... I hate those moments... in return a Mavis (from Kwajalein I guess) spotted our carriers at near max range, means I have to bog out of the area as KB could attempt to catch us... I want to take a safe route, so the two CV are ordered NORTH and will retire to San Francisco later on to form a 4 CV TF...

CA Louisville, Shell hits 1

as the enemy was landing at Nauru yesterday I was pretty sure we will find some ships there today and sent in two heavy cruisers (both coming alone from two different directions) and I have deliberately chosen to send them in at daylight as I expected to see them performing better than during the night... and? Well, Houston used up all her main gun ammo for one hit during daylight a couple of days (hey, must have been one of those bad die rolls?) and what was Louisville doing today? Using up all her main gun ammo for no result either... sorry, but Allied ships are performing bad by default and a good result is a super lucky die roll... DAYTIME surface combat! And then look at the dozens of engagements the IJ had so far in the SRA, note the difference?

You might wonder where the second heavy cruiser is, well, Louisville retreated out of the hex due to no ammo anymore, the other cruiser parked in the hex RIGHT NEXT TO THE ENEMY TF AND DID NOTHING... yeah, compare this to the bullet prove vacuum cleaning in the SRA... you know, I think I do have a reason to rant some time...

Day Time Surface Combat, near Nauru Island at 127,128, Range 20,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Asanagi
DD Yunagi, Shell hits 1, on fire
PB Nagata Maru
xAK Tenyo Maru, Shell hits 7, on fire
xAK Kamikaze Maru

Allied Ships

The Louisville seems to have a generic captain in command. You should check his stats and probably replace him with a better CO. Don't underestimate the effect of good ship commanders.

Problem is, of course, that the IJN has lots of good ship captains while good ship captains are a rare commodity for the Allies.[:D]

This, btw., explains the somewhat problematic performance of Allied warships in WITP and WITP/AE (it seems that the original designers of WITP were under the impression that Allied ship captains were a bunch of underperformers and gave them according stats while the IJN database contains lots of excellent captains).

Well, yeah, this is well known. The British submarine force in 1944 is absolutely gutted due to the fact that only a tiny number of RN captains are anything other than bog standard mooks. And while the USN doesn't have that problem with masses of decent skippers, at least later on, you still have the crew experience issues.

The personnel of the Allied navies are basically largely incompetent, hence why as a general rule they punch below their weight even with big hardware advantages.

Yeah, while I usually assign TF commanders worth something when I form up TFs at a base, Louisville was dispatched from another TF at Sea, means the captain of the cruiser is also the TF commander. But TF commander good or bad, why a heavy cruiser achieves nothing at all with all the 8 inch ammo it carries stays a mistery to me, this was a daylight fight. And the second one in only a couple of days with Houston being also one of the three stooges as EUBanana likes to call the Allied Navy and he's spot on.

Then why in my downfall scenario are my 2-4DD fleets wiping the floor of any and all IJN ships they encounter and barely being scratched in return?
Face it, it’s 1941.  The Allies suck.  Their ships suck.  Their crews suck.  Their leaders suck.   Get used to it.

No. If you look at ships that arrive in 1944 they have good experience.

Unfortunately the ships that arrive in 1942 will always suck because they have bad experience.

BB Howe, with experience 75, is gonna kick ass in 1944.

BB Prince of Wales, will not, as her crew are likely no better than they were in 1942.

Same ship class, same year, different arrival on map, different experience ratings.

Ship experience goes up very slowly, like one point per furball, so unless PoW gets into 20 battles she's stuck with 1942 level experience.

I imagine in your downfall scenario this is all totally turned on its head as even ships like BB Colorado or whatever might have 1944 levels of experience. Maybe in Downfall the RN have got more than 4 competent sub skippers too, I dunno. In the actual grand campaigns though it's a different ballgame. I always have SAGS based around 1944 arrival ships only. Even New Jersey is preferable to Iowa for this reason, Iowa came first, Iowa is less competent.

Also we have issues with yard queens like Mutsu with more competent crews than ships like Warspite, which is some sort of joke if historical accuracy is involved. The Allies didn't suck nearly as bad RL as they do in this, and where they did suck, they learned fast. In this game though Louisville there has night experience 34, you might get her up to 45 say by 1944 if she sees a lot of action and somehow survives (against all odds).

This battle is in 1941, so the allies suck, their ships suck, their crews suck, and what happened here is what I expect to happen: fire off all the main gun ammo and get 1 hit. I fail to see the problem here, or the cause for such ranting, but I enjoy reading the ranting, I just don't place any stock in it.

lol, face it, your 1941 ships still suck in 45 and those sure don't whipe the floor with the IJN. Get used to it.

then you fail to realize realism, easily put, sorry. A modern USN heavy cruiser in 1941 wasn't driven by complete idiots that would spend a thousand shells on an enemy convoy to achieve one hit. Before someone jumps on me due to exxageration again, I got no clue, perhaps a full ammo storage means less than a thousand shells, but roughly 100 per barrel doesn't seem that much to me and this would totally exclude any secondary ammo in my calculation so taking the game into real life, Houston would have fired probably more than a thousand shells on the enemy TF in broad daylight with nice weather for ONE friging hit! Hurrey! Lousville did tremendously better, scored 8 hits in total, for no imminent damage and over a thousand shells fired.

Just curious, are you trying to pull a leg with your statements or are you serious. Besides that, who knows how your downfall scen looks like.

edit: what EUBanana says, he points it out quite clearly.

So, a little use of the internet and you find this on navweaps:

United States of America

8"/55 (20.3 cm) Marks 9, 10, 11, 13 and 14

At the Battle of the Java Sea in February 1942, USS Houston (CA-30) was able to maintain a ROF of 5 - 6 rounds per minute during the early part of the battle, possibly through the use of "cue-balling" techniques.

6) Most of the 9-gun cruisers as commissioned were to normally carry 100 - 125 rounds per gun with a wartime allowance of 1,400 rounds per ship. During the early part of the war, the Northampton and Portland classes carried 1,500 rounds per ship, but this was reduced during refits after July 1942 to just over 1,300 rounds in order to allow for added AA weapons. The New Orleans class was reduced during refits after August 1942 to 125 rounds per gun.

http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_8-55_mk9.htm

looks like my guess wasn't all that bad and this means both Houston and Louisville spent MORE THAN 1000 8 inch SHELLS! Houston achieved a whopping 1 hit, Lousville wins with 8 hits.

Saying everything that has been Allied sucked is a good answer if you try to think about what would have happened in real life if a heavy USN CA fires more than 1000 shells at an enemy convoy, excellent explanation. [;)]

I don't think this is all that reasonable nor realistic but it probably supports the "the poor Japanese are nerfed theory" quite well. [:D]

Realism? So how'd the allies do in the Battle of Makassar Strait, Battle of Badung Strait, Battle of the Java Sea, and Battle of Sunda Strait? I mean, lol, in the Battle of Sunda Strait, the Japanese sunk more Japanese ships than the allied ships did. Yes, you read that right. The Japanese sunk more Japanese ships than the allies did. Good job CA Houston!!!!!

Just curious, are you trying to pull a leg with your statements or are you serious. Besides that, who knows how your downfall scen looks like.

Go review the actual combat results of WW2, and ask yourself who's pulling who's leg? The one that says "omg it's 1941 and my cruiser didn't score but one hit against the enemy, game engine fail this suck it needs to be recoded so my cruiser doesn't suck" when factual history backs up allied cruisers sucking, or is the one pulling the leg the one that says, "oh, your cruiser only made one hit. Sounds about right for the allies in 1941" ???

Your ships are performing as they should. Major suckititude, just like irl. I fail to see the reason for your rant.

Well maybe you outta read how the Battle of Java Sea played out in real life [;)] and see what's "realistic" and "reasonable".
