Looks like someone isn't plotting their minefields accurately in accordance with international law:

TF 1 encounters mine field at Port Hedland (57,129)

Japanese Ships
SS I-123, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

TF 1 encounters mine field at Port Hedland (57,129)

Japanese Ships
SS I-123, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

TF 357 encounters mine field at Port Hedland (57,129)

Japanese Ships
SS I-154, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

There seems to be a lot of that about. Perhaps the third party mining firms need more rigorous regulation? What happens to a Jap I boat when it hits TWO mines? It was probably the severed conning tower flying 300 yds downrange and striking a second mine.

One of our own DD's didn't get the memo, either.

TF 172 encounters mine field at Port Hedland (57,129)

Allied Ships
DD Hull, Mine hits 1, heavy damage

Did we hit our own offensive minefield or a Jap defensive minefield or........?

Yes...I just sent in two CM's I found lolling about in Perth [:)]

If I had known it would sink our own ships then I might have chosen differently. [:)] I wish you people would tell me these things.

I wish you people would tell me these things

6.6.1
(there is a small
chance that a ship will hit a friendly minefield, but this is very unlikely).

Perhaps the captain of USS Hull had not read the manual either. [;)]

At one point there WAS a LYB minefield there. Not sure if they all rusted away.

By ra way. If you plan to attack Corunna again we have a para unit ready at Meekathara to get a free shock bonus. Most likely some air to ground attacks combined with the uparmoured sorghum harvesters at Corunna will be enough to push it to 2:1

If I can have some transports. I think we'll also attack at PH today too.

If we can keep the mediums on PH all the heavies can go to Darwin/Broome/Katherine.

********************Dec. 22, 1942(c)*****************

Darwin: That minefield that Fr. O'Brien put in East of Bathurst must be a ball buster. It took the PT boats that STARTED in the field 12 hrs to get through so they ended up in a daytime duel with Jap DD's

Day Time Surface Combat, near Darwin at 76,124, Range 15,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Akizuki
DD Arashio
DD Natsugumo
DD Murasame
DD Isonami

Allied Ships
PT-143, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
PT-148, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
PT-149, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
PT-170, Shell hits 2, and is sunk
PT-172, Shell hits 2, and is sunk

Siri was right. It IS possible to do an 8 hex fighter sweep from Allied carriers in 1942. Unfortunately, they two squadrons went in separately and were overmatched. I don't really like trading F4F's for Tojo pilot fatigue.

Morning Air attack on Darwin , at 76,124

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 39 NM, estimated altitude 31,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 13 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 12
Ki-44-IIa Tojo x 19

Allied aircraft
F4F-4 Wildcat x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-4 Wildcat: 3 destroyed

and then...

Morning Air attack on Darwin , at 76,124

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid detected at 25 NM, estimated altitude 27,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 8 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 9
Ki-44-IIa Tojo x 17

Allied aircraft
F4F-4 Wildcat x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-44-IIa Tojo: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-4 Wildcat: 2 destroyed

We can start doing this soon:

Also, air dropped mines are an option here if a city with a port is targeted. Air dropped mine
Missions may not be flown before 1943.

Right...it's a full Bn so it will take about 30 transports or so. They would have to come over from Tennant Creek...which is OK as it is running out of supply anyway.

Also, FYI, Gove may be a better spot for origination of para drops near Darwin as opposed to Daly as Gove can be supplied by sea. If you have a spare company, Bathurst would also be a good target so the amphibious troops wont be as disrupted.

Re: the question about mine damage, Canoerebel had the same question in his War and Peas AAR. Here is the text of my reply to him:

Re: subs and mines [as opposed to hearts and minds or clowns and mimes] - Pre-upgrade I always thought the effect of mines was underpowered vs. real life. No way should a sub with little reserve bouyancy survive a mine hit. Post upgrade, the question came up so I did a little test. I started up Scenario 1 and moved a few of the IJN subs around Pearl Harbour to patrol in the mined base. I learned:

One mine hit ~ 25 pts floatation damage and similar system damage. Most survive a long trip home.

Three mine hits ~ 65 floatation damage and difficult to control because of the similar system damage. Almost all subs with three hits sink within six hexes.

Mine damage does not take effect until the end of the phase [night or day] or until the ship or sub is involved in combat in the same phase. This means one sub could hit five or six mines and the damage does not register until much later. Darned annoying when mine production is so low.

Bottom line - mine effects are still underpowered. I guess this is good for the game experience as you can dare to sneak into a mined port, but IRL such raids were unlikely.

Your question was about two mine hits on an I-boat. I'd give it 35-55 damage and 50-50 on chances of surviving a long trip to a friendly base.

Chalk that up to the I-boat mine bonus which is in the vein of the Zero bonus and the Donkey bonus.

I-123 survives 2 mines but USS Hull sinks with one.

So Pocahantas Gril calls Stalker Gril for advice. It seems Pocahantas Gril got cited for no seat belt.

CHip: I pulled you over ma'am for no seat belt.

PG: But I do have it on, officer. I just dont wear the shoulder strap. See. <shoulder strap is under her arm pit, under the tatats and thusly>

CHip: Ma'am, that is still a vioaltion.

PG: But I had a boob job and it hurts if I wear the strap across my boobs. See. <she readjusts and the thing pretty much disappears>

CHip: <does due diligence in examining the situation> We will grant a medical exemption with a doctor's note, ma'am.

So she gets cited and calls up Stalker Girl to see if I will sign it, the Pediatrician. [8|] I advised SG to tell PG to ask her plastic surgeon. I saw her while I was walking the dogs and pretended to look down at the trail so I wouldn't get stuck in a "curbside consult".

Here is the more salient question. How on Earth do you manage NOT to get out of a ticket when you are showing the male CHP officer your new bolt-ons? Somebody needs to teach her how to flirt...never mind..I know she knows how. Maybe the ChiP was gay? He thought it was an internal investigation? Something was wrong in the world yesterday.

SG got out a speeding ticket going NINETY MPH!!!! I would have been handcuffed and hauled away.

Perhaps the CHiP reads your AAR and was waiting for the 'proof of commando' defence?

I actually wondered the same thing. She claims it was because it was her birthday in 2 d. [8|]

OK...show of hands. Who thinks this in going to work?

The invasion, I mean.

Oh, I'm kidding. Don't get your AFB undies in a bunch.

Yeah, your invasion will work. Don't know if JJ's navy / AF will extract a steep price for your effort, but you should get ashore in sufficient strength to get the job done.

Did another experiment with JJ DDs in Singapore harbour ► one or two mine hits = survival: ?N three hits brings an order to report to a Mr. Davey Jones ?«
Seems there is a bit of a JJ anti-mine bonus for DDs too - or maybe Milo was selling the allies mines filled with sand ...
