I'm a Victor

Post by Wild Bill »

After designing and playing the individual scenarios during the construction process, I waited a few weeks to lose my familiarity with the setup and finally played the Victors campaign.

I must say this was one of the toughest for me and I just could not stop. I went from one battle to the next, fighting at least two battles in each sitting.

It was a learning process. The toughest battle for me personally and the most enjoyable was the advance through Bad Duben with the paratroopers hitting the eastern edge and holding on while I pushed hard to relieve them.

The fanatical stand of the paras against Russian infantry and tanks was very moving. I really could smell the cordite, hear the cries of anguish and sense the desperation of the moment.

The Russians, while not the usual hordes, were well positioned and slowed me down far too much.

I have some new heroes as a result. Sgt Wilder (Who else? Image ) has over 40 kills with his Pershing. And he is hungry for more.

The progression of the campaign was interesting. I went from some draws and ended with decisives. I did end with a minor victory, which was more than I had earlier anticipated.

I did at least get the promise of trading my eagles for stars.

Any of you finished yet? How did you do?

Thank you Mr. Wilder,
I had a great time with the campaign. I started with a tank corp and met with disaster by the end of the second battle - two draws did not give me enough point to repair anywhere near enough to even bother showing up for the next round, and so back to the drawing board.
Infantry got me through in the end, although judging by reports of the tweaks that have happened to the close assault routines for ver 4.6 they may no longer be the anti-tank supermen that we all know and love.
I really did not like the look of that airborne assault before I played it - and guess what? I didn't really like the look of it until the very last turn was played. It can be pretty hard to guess where the next enemy reinforcements are coming from.
That final scenario was another gem. The look of horror on my face as soon as I finished deployment and started the first turn must have been a sight worth seeing (... I think you know what I mean...).
Finally managed a minor victory for the whole hard campaign - first battle a draw, the rest DVs, but only at the cost of starting the whole thing again and replaying two crucial turns of that airborne assault scenario. I feel like I cheated somewhat though - I used two cargo planes in the second scenario to get troops to the southern most VH early, and selected some Italian motorcycle troops as scouts for the next one (at least they were on the correct side then, which is slightly better than suddenly having access to Tigers...) their mobility got me a lot of points early in the fight just by grabbing VHs and running for cover when the red threat showed up. Oh, and I play with C&C off. One of these days I am going to take the plunge and get some real fog of war going.
That was one good campaign. Much appreciated.

WB,
Sure you won those "easy" battles, but have you won "Task Force Wilder" yet? LOL
