What is "system damage"...
To an otherwise healthy ship? What does it do? Worsen the outcomes when other damages occur? Worsen the operations?

RE: What is "system damage"...
A small elaboration with an example: if a ship has damages of 12 0 0, is it really something one needs to repair?

RE: What is "system damage"...
For example, anything over 10 sys is going to make your ship (and also TF) easier to spot (smoke). It will also slow the ship down. Sys damage is wear and tear on ships system (or hits) and it'll affect performance adversely. You can usually live with something under 10...but 10+ is bit pushing it.
Keep also in mind, that if ship gets hit, that extra sys dmg can cause damage control fail...not a good thing.

Thanks! Forgot about the smoke and great other points also!

RE: What is "system damage"...
Sys damage is anything that isn't floataion or engine damage. It could mean the ice cream maker is broken or the captain's head is backed up, but it could also mean an ammunition lift isn't working, a plane elevator is wonky, or damage control pumps are broken. If I remember right, there are random checks against the Sys damage for various things and the higher the Sys damage, the more likely you are to fail the roll.
The animation shows smoke when damage is high, but that is misleading. A ship wouldn't be producing extra smoke unless it had active fires. The graphic is a quirk that was inherited from Uncommon Valor.
If I can afford the down time I try to keep Sys damage as low as possible. Unless they are critically needed at the moment, I will disband ships with any damage in a large port upon arrival. It slows down cargo moving a bit, but it keeps my ships in top condition.

The important thing to remember is that heavy system damage can contribute to critical system failure. So, if you have a ship with heavy system damage and heavy flotation damage then unless you get to a port real quick you will probably founder and sink. Yet, a ship with no system damage and a decent crew can make a safe ocean going voyage even with heavy flotation damage. The other thing is that system damage can be fully repaired over time in any port. So, eliminate or reduce your system damage before attempting to move a heavily damaged ship.

Yes I also had this image of system damage contributing to flooding and failing pumps on a ship. Makes sense also

Don't forget your armaments are part of the systems. If you have turrets knocked out (or being upgraded) this will add to the total systems damage.

Yes and no. Weapon damage is "system" damage in the sense it isn't engine or floatation. But weapon damage repairs VERY differently than System damage. Some weapon damage requires very large, limited-number ports to repair at all.
See Alfred's Repair 101.

That would be Rocky correct?

And that being said, it makes sense,
and that also makes the Medusa Comments quite appropriate.

I work it like that too. With CS TF or ASW patrols I always try and keep one or two extra ships based at their home port that way you can swap them in and out without producing the turnaround lag.
