Have you missed operation "hulk smash"? [:D]

I´m not sure that resizing the air squadrons is actually going to add any defensibility to the CV fleet. Is having a 500 plane CAP instead of a 300 going to change anything? According to GJ the "magic" limit is 300 CAP. Any more and there won´t be enough fire passes anyway. Or have I misunderstood something?

I think you've misunderstood something. [8D]

A lot depends on how split up the carriers are, how many hexes apart, etc. You need each chunk capable of defending itself to the utmost. And how good the fighters are. A squadron of Corsairs is worth what? 1.5 squadrons of Hellcats?

Edit: Also, these ops as you get close in tend to be multi-day and more fighters accounts for damage and fatigue. Even if GJ is right, how many fighters do you need on-scene to get 300 to engage? For five straight days?

Remember too that this is what the replenishment CVEs are for, this era, far forward. Also, remember that on Jan. 1 your AEs play Cinderella and can suddenly do underway replenishment of your AA ammo. All so you can move in range and get some forward operating bases.

I have had some luck so far keeping the CVs in the same hex. Key is to NEVER use full speed. If you do they are likely to end up all over the map. I´ve tried to keep things as balanced as possible in each TF. So if anyone ends up alone they will have some CAP up.

I already have almost all squadrons on the CVs flying Corsairs. The ones doing escort duty uses the Hellcats though. Might have to reconfigure that a bit when/if I resize. Its just that I hate losing striking power at this stage. There is still plenty of opportunity for fast CV raids and I feel the resize shifts the CVs to a defensive tool instead of a offensive one. Having 500 strike planes is a big hammer. Having 200 is just a "meh" that likely won´t penetrate any kind of CAP/LRCAP.

Decisions! [:D]

You do have to be uber-offensive in 1945. It's just that you have to let go of the sink-em-all mentality and let the navy do what all navies are designed to do at their base--support operations on land. Your offense is there and in the skies over the HI. The KB is meaningless now, more or less, except in how it can refuse an amphibious landing. Your commerce can't be raided any more, and your carriers aren't probing his perimeter either. You're in his house getting ready to steal the silver.

It's a mindset change. Can't say that enough. If he collapses with ten carriers still afloat, so what?

Now, if he offers them up, sink them. With lots of fighters the chances of your strike force surviving to the target are higher. More fighters is almost never a bad thing.

But it's your call.

I agree with "The Moose" on allowing the re-sizing to happen. You need your carriers to be able to survive along with other ships. The kamikaze attacks have not come in full bore yet and 'if' KB shows up, it would be best if they just impale themselves on your CAP. For now, the DB/TB groups should have just elite pilots. The new fighter groups can be some F6F Hellcats with some as Corsairs. You do have extra Hellcats to use and you could use some of your Corsairs on land.

I'm also wary of "One player has this experience"

So much depends on settings, the war situation and what your opponent does.

I also see more fighters on deck as more escorts for your raids on KB.

Thanks for the advice guys. [&o]

I´ve decided on a "semi resize approach". I´ll start upgrading the CVs with the new squadrons based on airframe availability. So I think I can go ahead and resize about 2/3rds the squadrons on "day 1". After that I´ll do them as I have planes available.

No point in having some CVs under max capacity just waiting for planes. [:)]

IJ Tank Divisions
______________________________________________________________________________

A while back I asked about the TOE for these divisions. I didn´t get any reply so I dug up the information myself. On paper it looks like a solid unit so I decided to try some scenarios out. Turns out at this stage of the war the Japanese tank divisions are useless. [:)]

Attacking with a deliberate attack against one US44/OZ/Indian division in a clear hex without forts the tank division was absolutely gutted with 60-80% losses in just one attack. The allied divisions sustained virtually no damage.

Defending in a wooden hex against two allied Tank BTLs (2x59 Shermans) the IJ tank division also got completely gutted. The allied Tank BTLs did suffer some damaged though. When in a clear hex the Tank Division was almost destroyed.

I´m not even sure this is the correct TOE. I just threw in the best IJ light and medium tank in the database. The actual Tank divisions might actually be even worse then the one I used for testing.

Good news for team Allies. [:)]

Japanese armor was perhaps the worst in WWII - even worse than the Italians (who actually had a decent tank in 1943, but never really got a chance to use it before they surrendered to the allies). Of course, given the overall terrain in the Pacific War, it isn't surprising that their tank development was woefully lacking.

Of course, in AE - Japanese units, in general, can't stand up against mid-to-late war Allied Ground units in open terrain or where forts are lacking - hence the need to dig, dig, dig for them starting in 1943 - on.

Good luck with your upcoming operations.

A little naval and air action today.

------------------------
Singapore
------------------------

For the last two weeks I have been sending recon planes over Singapore. Recon has showed 2-4 CVEs in port together with some tankers and other various ships. Only 15 fighter so I though the losses would be worth it nailing some CVEs repairing.

Turns out even allied recon can be faulty.

While I´m pretty sure most if not all of them will sink I´m not too happy about the exchange. 16 Fighters on CAP meant 16 B29s lost (where ARE those overpowered 4Es [&:]). Thats basically 2 B29s squadrons out for the rest of the war. And sinking tankers at this stage is pointless.

I managed to dodge the sporadic Naval search in the area and got a British DD TF into position for a 10 hexes dash. Worked well but I had hoped for better targets.

Erik is evacuating Bangkok via sea! Looks like I really did manage to cut him off and the stay wasn´t deliberate. 15 units and 35.000 men are missing. I won´t allow that. Fast CVs start moving into the South China Sea. Lets see if Erik is willing to risk the KB for those men. Every sub in the area is also vectored in.

I´m not sure its a smart to try and get them out via sea and it might have been better for him to leave them. But perhaps he will manage somehow to get them out.

Also got some interesting developments on the superstack.

At least he won't be basing any more ships in Singapore.....of course, if there is any oil left in the DEI, I'm sure he was pretty keen on getting it out under the buzzer - and that will be a lot harder now....you really need to shut the front and back doors to make sure nothing else gets away.

I disagree on the pointlessness of sinking the TKs. It looks like he was trying to get a final convoy out, and you caught it. That sounds worth it.

There are also the VPs to consider. You lost 32 in the B-29s. He lost more than that in just 4 ships, and you sunk how many? Yes, losing those B-29s hurts your bombing efforts in the HI... Maybe you should be using B-17s and 2Es for these port strikes, then [;)].

Not really action packed turns. But stuff is starting to happen again.

------------------------
Strat bombing
------------------------

Some 100 B29s strike Tokyo with heavy losses to NFs. I had set them on 20k hoping to get above the CAP. No such luck. [:(]
Night Air attack on Tokyo , at 114,60

Japanese aircraft losses
J1N1-S Irving: 2 destroyed
Ki-46-III KAI Dinah: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
B-29-25 Superfort: 1 destroyed, 13 damaged
B-29-25 Superfort: 1 destroyed by flak

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x B-29-25 Superfort bombing from 20000 feet *
City Attack: 10 x 500 lb GP Bomb
2 x B-29-25 Superfort bombing from 20000 feet *
City Attack: 10 x 500 lb GP Bomb

City Attack: 10 x 500 lb GP Bomb
5 x B-29-25 Superfort bombing from 20000 feet *
City Attack: 10 x 500 lb GP Bomb

I did manage to get some fires going though. But in the process I lost 22 B29s. [:(] So 15 days of replacements and 22 of the best bomber pilots in the game lost in a single bomb raid. I´ll post the damage inflicted once the fires have died down to asses the worth.

Troops land without a hitch. Some Kamis take off but are dealt with by the ship flak. Thankfully as the LRCAP from Jolo never showed up!

On the 26th Erik tried to interdict my bombings over the Superstack. He got a bit of a double bad luck here and for once ALL the P38 sweeps arrived before the bombers. To add insult the 4Es bombed other targets this turn so all Erik got where 4 2Es. [:'(]

Pretty happy with how the P38s performed today. They actually shot down twice their numbers! These pilots are "cannonfodder". IE they are completely fresh from flight school. [&o]

Bombardments of the Superstack is showing better and better results. I´m currently getting between 400 and 600 causualies per day. Thats between 3-4000 per week. And that is not counting the bombing milkruns.

------------------------
Luzon
------------------------

Siege troops arrive at Manila. I´m going to give them 2-3 days to rest fatigue and dig some forts before launching the first bombardment. I think this is the heaviest concentration of artillery so far in the game. High expectations that will probably end in disappointment...

Definitively the highest concentration of armor so far though. I estimate it at around 1000 Shermans.

Two airfields on Luzon will soon reach 8. Once they hit that I´m going to move the air force in.

------------------------
CENTPAC
------------------------

The convoys reach the Marianas. Not undetected though. I placed the CVEs between the civilian ships and Eriks bases. Hopefully they will draw any strikes away from the transports and tankers.

Quick question:

I´m getting some fluctuations in VP points from time to time. Four turns ago Erik all of the sudden closed the gap with 400 something VPs. No ships was taken off the sunk list of anything. Whats causing this? In tracker I could not find anything that would account for this.

Base supply?

The "Base VP" value I think is the theoretical maximum but is adjusted down for lack of supply in its contribution to total VP. So a high value base that was insufficiently supplied being resupplied can add a lot of points. It doesn't actually need to get resupplied, it can just be units are moved out reducing its supply demand.

Spidery is correct. (And for bonus points in this round of AE Trivia, I'll tell you that the base currently affecting this is probably Manila.)
