The AAR is now CURRENT!!!!!!!!!!

First off I would like to give credit to all the people who take the time to do AAR's. It takes as much time and energy as actually playing the game.

Overall things are going really well for the Allies. The Japanese faced a humiliating defeat at Port Moresby in May and have not really recovered. The Hiryu got BLOWED UP - (That is a technical term)by a lucky sub shot in mid June. A sneak attack by my carrier group also managed to take out the Nagato.

As for the allies, I have lost a couple heavy cruisers in combat and the Tennessee at Pearl Harbor. No Aircraft Carriers have been harmed in combat.

Sigint tells me that the Japanese are training for assaults on Port Moresby and Cox's Bazar.

Nothing has changed in my strategic plans for a movement through the Banda Sea NW toward Soerbaja.

Lets start by looking at the Aleutians...

I just put a couple Regiments into Dutch Harbor raising my AV to 296.

Some regiments are training for the Japanese islands (Kuriles?) so I have invasion options but at this stage of the game they would only be used as a diversion and not a serious assault. My plans for this area is to build up Adak and the western islands from now through the winter using some of the excess engineers that I will receive.

New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Fiji

I have over 400 AV at Suva and 200 AV at Noumea. The Japanese have a regiment and another unit at Luganville. He can keep that base warm for me for as long as he wants.

My objective in this area is to move some AV from Suva to Australia for dispersal northwards. If the Japanese come for these bases they are protected enough to may him pay for them.

I was building up some of the islands near Suva but it seems unnecessary now so I am evacuating those base forces back to Suva for shipment elsewhere.

Guadalcanal.

Gunnulf has troops on Guadalcanal of unknown strength and composition. I dont really care what he has there to be honest.

Ndeni has 180AV so enough to hold off a division. If he does a major assault then it will likely fall. I dont think he will be worried about Ndeni within a few weeks but lets see what happens.

As for Rabaul, Shortland, etc. He can keep all of it. I hope he builds it into a fantastic fortress. I am going around it.

NE Australia

I won a decisive battle against Gunnar on June 11, 1942 taking back Tenant Creek. One of the big reasons was he was out of supply. Supply is a huge problem in this area and the reason that I let him get as far inside Australia as I did without putting up any resistance. Alice Springs has 60,000+ supply and Cloncurry has over 100K I think. It just wont move down the roads.

Anyway, I am beginning a push toward Daly Waters. The single unit in front of me has to be the 20th Division that I battled on the 11th. The 3 units in Daly Waters may or may not be the command and 2 artillery units that were with the 20th division.

Initially when the Japanese invaded the 40th Bde was involved but I have not seen it in a while. I am not sure what that means. Constant scans of Darwin reveal only a handful of units and hundreds of men.

My most aggressive plan is to invade Darwin by amphibious assault within 2 weeks trapping 8-10 Japanese units and 30-40,000 men. I have divisions trained for Darwin, Bathurst & Taberfane. Taberfane is too risky especially with 3 large Japanese air fields operational right now. And it would need to be built up to be useful. Bathurst was a plan in case he had fortress Darwin and I could get his airfield down long enough to put a division and a bunch of engineers there to blockade him.

Right now considering his weakness in carriers and maybe his reluctance to commit them along with his complete lack of searching for naval ships has emboldened me to try to take this on.

So, I am dwadling northwards trying to make a show of it while the 24th infantry division loads onto amphibious transports at Townsville. I also have 2 American tank battalions moving up the coastal road toward Darwin in case this all goes FUBAR....

SW Australia...

Perth is well defended with over 600AV. When Gunnulf first raided the area I feared a japanese invasion so I supplemented the forces in this area and also put a dive bombing squadron along with 3 fighter squadrons here. The Americal division is prepping for the invasion of Broome. Transports and surface ships are about 10 days out from Perth.

The 1st Australian division is on the way from the East coast for kicks and grins. I dont think I need the AV over there and if I want ground forces in Northern Australia they can march from Carnarvon to Port hedland to Broome.

NW Australia

There has been no activity here for quite some time. I saw an AF carrier fleet here about 2 or 3 days before the invasion of Port Moresby and just caught a glimpse at maximum range.

I moved the DD isis to Port Hedland and there is no detection on him or the base. I am moving in another destroyer along with some supplies. If I can successfully supply the base I will return and assist in an invasion of Broome.

For some reason Gunnulf does not seem to be using any ships to do naval searches in this area either. Carnarvon is about to go to a lvl 2 airfield.

Gulf Of Carpentera, New Guinea, etc.

At Merauke the airfields just went to lvl 2. There are 3 seabees that should arrive at this base in 2 days to speed up the process. This airfield is 13 hexes away from Darwin and will provide heavy bomber support should the invasion plan fail or be delayed. Merauke has a regiment and 120AV+ so it can handle a sneak assault should it occur. I currently have 96 av support here.

Horn Island is 69% of the way to a lvl 4 airfield and has over 120 engineers plus a few vehicles to help it grow. I have 162 AV support and need more and it is being airlifted from Port Moresby about 8 men a day. I cant wait for a healthy transport fleet.

Wessell Island I have managed to sneak parts of the 808EAB on the island about 3 days ago and it is already 10% on an airfield. I might use this to support Darwin if the invasion is delayed or destroyed.

Gove I have a small transport at Gove sneaking supply onto the dot base. It will be useful if my ground forces reach north far enough.

Timoeka & Groote Eylandt I have AVP/AVD along with patrol aircraft to detect his movements.

None of this area is being swept by search aircraft. I am baffled and emboldened.

July 3, 1942

177th USAAF moving from Seattle to Annette Island
9th & 145th Regiments moving from Townsville to Port Moresby for reinforcement
24th ID, 110th CEB, SW Pac, USN Air So Pac headed to Horn Island in preparation for invasion.
CV Yorktown, Enterprise & Hornet escorting invasion fleet along with STF of 5 BB's 1 CA & other surface ships.
Sub Patrols spreading out in seas north of Darwin as a trap.
Wessel Islands went from 10 - 17% airfield 1
Transports moving 2nd USMC Battalion from Port Morsby to Horn Island
Transports moving 1st USMC air wing base force from Townsville to Port Moresby
Transports moving 1st USMC air wing base force from Port Moresby to Horn Island
Cargo TF sails into Port Hedland with no detection and will begin unloading.
4th & 5th Brigades & 2nd?Recce Bn inbound from Adan to Bombay.

Imphal Area
At Imphal the Japanese have the 18th Division, the 55th Engineer regiment, 2 artillery units and the 5th Army HQ. It is aproximately 515AV VS the 7th Australian Division and support units at 546AV. He showed up with more firepower including the Imperial Guards division but it has bled off to the east I believe.

At Jorhat he has the 21st Division divided, the 23rd Engineer regiment, the 15th Ind. Engineer Regiment, the 14th Tank Regiment and the 3rd Medium Field Artillery Regiment at 525AV.
I just recently reinforced Jorhat by strategic move and now have 412AV in the hex.

He took Ledo for some reason. I guess he could use the airfield if he can get supply in. I think it is the same with the oil. He cant use it unless he gets it out of there and it is not likely. I am moving the 2nd Bengal Base Force back towards Ledo to see if it is occupied.

I have 104 AV at Dimapur, 272AV at Kohima, 449AV in the hex NE of Imphal.

I am not sure why he is pushing so hard in the Imphal area. He does not have much more to gain. My best guess is the expansion fever. Unless he can open a coastal supply source his gains in this area will never be sustainable.
Not much air activity other than targeted bombing of ground troops. My air force in this area is smashed as I tried to go against him and it just doesnt work for early british aircraft. Calcutta would be almost defenseless if not for the lend lease American P40E's.

He got Kalemyo up to lvl 1 air field so I am moving the Kowloon brigade down to attempt to take it over.

I have the 1st Burma brigade & 9th Burma Rifles Battalion hidden or not so hidden in the woods west of Shwebo ready to assist eventually.
I have 2 divisions at Colombo - the 18th ID & The 6th Australian division training for an invasion of Port Blair. I am ready to go now but air support would be much better. The timing of that invasion is dependent upon events in the near future as always.

July 4, 1942

Torres Strait Bn unloading at Wessel Island

Wessel Island goes from 17 - 25% lvl 1 airfield

PM Invasion force is 6 days from Darwin at soonest

255th USN is re-packing at Horn Island for Invasion

Set LRCap for incoming regiments to port moresby

Created and sent 3 more sub TF's for shallows near Darwin.

27th ID loading along with other troops at PH for transport to Raratonga. Why? Cause I like the sound of it...

I like to use waypoints and send my ships on odd routes to their destination for safety reasons. I have not seen any of his subs for a while. Either he has upgrades or he is reorganizing.

In about 2 days I can buy out the last available ID from the west coast for shipping toward Australia. He is 100% prepped for Taberfane and would make the 2nd one. The 27th ID is prepped for Darwin but I am not going to wait for him.

The west coast is pretty bare. There are a few restricted regiments needed buying out and I can always use some of the support units. Also, I think there are some good reinforcements coming within the next week or so.

Upgrading ships has been a real PITA. I am doing my best though and pretty proud that I have somewhere between 70-90 to upgrade when last month required over 300 upgrades. Some of the Battleships need work and three of the CV's but I want to complete several major operations before I take them offline. That might take me into the fall, I am not sure.

I have almost convinced myself to split my carrier forces and send the two that are about out of the yards at Sydney (tomorrow hopefully) to Perth to assist in the invasion of Broome and then possibly on to Colombo to assist with the assault of Port Blair. I might want to send the Wasp as well but it will be participating in this weeks upcoming actions.

Everything is fluid and dependent upon too many unknowns at this point but I am trying to stay flexible and provide myself as many options as possible.

If I can take Broome and Darwin and basically secure Australia by the end of the year I will be doing well. If I manage to break out northwards I will be doing fantastic. If I manage to take Soerbaja by the end of the year this war will be over soon. If I get all my carriers sunk then we are talking 1946... LOL too many variables.

The two carriers in the sydney yards have no planes on them and those planes are on the other 3 carriers and at Townsville. I think I will set up to have all of the fighters I can carry on the carriers and just set up for as much CAP as possible for incoming attacks. I will use my surface fleets for protection against incoming surface forces. If he dares try come through the Horn Island route it is almost level 4 with decent cap and would make a wicked unsinkable carrier. I have over 200 AV on it now.

Unless something changes I will have 8-10 cruisers hit Darwin on DD-1 along with a Mine sweeping TF to take out the airfield and certify the troops located at the base. Then on DDay I plan on hitting Darwin with 7 BB bombardment task force and unload 1 ID along with 1 CEB and the SW pacific along with the 255th USN base force and an aviation base force.

If everything works properly I should be able to capture the base on DD+1 and pull out on DD+2. He will be able to attack from at least 2 bases including Boela (lvl 5) and one of the bases on the island of Timor. The 2nd one is the one I am more concerned with because I think he might be able to get fighter escorts from there the 9 hexes to Darwin. If he is completely disorganized I get 2 free days but by DD + 1 he will have bombers inbound for sure.

If things go FUBAR on the ocean we will retreat back to Horn Island. If things go FUBAR on land we will try to hold out until I can get reinforcements on the ground either through paradrop to the dot hex south of Darwin and/or by landing units unprepped for Darwin and throwing good money after bad. The last option would only be under very small circumstances.

At DD +5 I can start loading the Americal division for delivery to Broome if he has not done any thing with it. Within 2 weeks I could have a decent surface fleet plus air support in that area. We will see how things shake out.

There are not many places in the game at this time I can really be hurt. He could take pearl harbor and it would not matter. Right now I have almost 1300AV so it would be a bad time. Columbo is over 1300 AV as well. Calcutta is pretty weak at around 400AV but it is heavy urban and BB's cant get upstream. If he breaks out near Imphal I just keep from getting cut off and let him burn men and supplies until my strength outgrows his.

I hope to keep Gunnulf reacting rather than acting and keep the initiative from now on but we shall see.

Just finished catching up with your very readable AAR - good amount of detail and commentary on the cut and thrust of play. I'm in-between games at the moment and reading this takes me back to a previous campaign I played that ended in '43.

Its a horrible feeling for Japan when you can start to feel your offensive options starting to run out as early as mid-42 so I imagine your opponent will be rueing the loss of so many carriers for so little gain, as well as the blunting of his N Australian offensive. I also like to take out Darwin as the Japanese to help protect the DEI's flank but have always considered advancing on Alice Springs unnecessary, as well as pretty futile due to the supply situation.

You are playing a commendably aggressive counterpunching game as the Allies, possibly helped a little by his tendency to spread himself out too thinly in places. Having gained Pt Moresby seems he lost it just as easily by leaving it too exposed and weakly defended. Still there's a long road ahead to Tokyo. Good luck!

Welcome Walker and thanks for commenting!!

I would say that up to this point Gunnulf's only blind spot is his blind spot. He is giving me 1-3 days extra on invasions and has not really attacked small shipping that I am using now, etc. I think that is what got him into trouble with his carriers at Port Moresby. He did not know what he was attacking before he went for it.

But there are alot of moving parts to this game and lots of clicking to do. Heck, I am barely learning how to use subs and cannot figure out why I cannot reload my mine layers.

About Port Moresby, you are right. I am sure he is kicking himself. In the meantime he commented at what an insignificant base it was while training troops to take it back... LOL!! I really need to keep it if I want to continue my offensive and thus the 2 regiments taking it to 700AV. It also has a few AA units and over 150K supply. If he ever manages to take it back he will pay a premium for it.

He still has a huge navy and quite a few working carriers so the tide of battle could change in a few days!!

Stay tuned!

I might just be looking for another game soon. I am not addicted, I can quit at any time!!

Well played on the Moresby invasion. I personally think this game works pretty well as advertised and although I don't play PBEM (not yet, anyway), to me it seems HRs are mostly unneeded. As Bullwinkle would say, there are always workarounds and there's an opportunity cost in using your 4Es on troops.

Rather than remarking on the impossibility of a real-life invasion of that size at PM, I might have responded by isolating PM by taking Horn Island and Milne Bay (if he doesn't have it already) and making PM a big POW camp of about half of your free-roaming Pacific Theater divisions. It's tough to supply PM without air superiority. Anyway, there may have been very good reasons against trying such a containment strategy, notably having a KB that has suffered losses.

Cheers,

How far can his fighters escort bombers in July of 1942??

I am guessing that Koepang and Boela are too far but I am not sure about Dili.

Also, I am considering hitting the Dili airfield instead of Darwin.

I have an invasion incoming in 5 days and the ability to deploy 7 battleships and over 10 Heavy cruisers as bombardemnt. I am seriously considering not bombing Darwin to save the airfield and port from damage.

I am about 5 days out from Darwin @ 5 hexes per day.

I'm paranoid about Allied operations off north coast of Aust. There is no retreat! You do not have overwelming carrier superiority. He has many proximate airfields. He has dozens of nearby islands to hide in. I would only do it in mid'42 if I knew KB away visiting elsewhere. By the same token he needs to get his ass outa Aust....why not plan to knock off those 30-40K worth of evacuees when he starts this?

One of his major carriers got sunk by a sub so his KB is smaller. He also lost 2 major and 1 minor CV that were slower. So he is down 3 1/2 carriers ATM.

He cannot get in through the Horn Islands because I will tear him a new one with LBA. Townsville is lvl 9 AF. I have plenty of aviation support. It appears he has alot more airpower at Darwin than I thought so I will be going through with bombardments.

If I can hit him and be gone with about 3-4 days he might not be able to get the KB into position. As for my fleet I will have 3 major CV's plus the Wasp with 6 CV's worth of Wildcats on the decks to protect the invasion fleet.

One last thing is that I am already up by about 4 carriers so if I get mauled pretty badly it might help balance things out. As I go along I am going to be less and less cautious till that happens.

July 5, 1942

It was a pretty quiet turn.

Started moving 3 repaired BB's from Seattle back to Pearl Harbor
I started moving 2 carriers towards perth but I am still divided on the action at this time. Diverting many air force groups to their decks in 2-4 turns as they are empty right now.

Gunnulf is bombing Jorhat. I checked out India and will be able to free up a couple hundred AV of armor to assist in the area. I am moving some AA up there to fend off his bomber attacks.

Invasion fleet moves on. It is now 5 days from Darwin at minimum. I looked at bypassing Horn Island but would have been 21 hexes away from Darwin. If I lose the day it will be 18 hexes away which is preferable. Next turn I will re-configure the fleet and send it on it's way. Hopefully the USN base force only takes 1 turn to load.

No detection at Port Hedland, transport unloading supplies. I could sneak a unit into here and have them go overland if I wanted to be safer. We will see what happens in the next week. I cannot start loading the Americal division for 8-9 days.

That is about it.

CC has it pretty well right on... As the Japanese player I too would be salivating over the chance to bomb that many concentrated troops.

I wouldn't even be insistent on taking Horn Is. The key here is AF bases... Lae, Rabaul, and Wewak. All 3 bases can be built up and are supplyable from Truk (even by air)
Lae is for fighter sweeps over Port Moresby (Range< 7), Rabaul & Wewak are bomber/escort bases (Range< 10) The L/R escorts would need drop tanks and the fatigue would be a factor... but If you suppress his CAP then Allied losses are inevitable, I guesstimate 50% - and who wouldn't expend the materials/men to eliminate a division and a half? As CC noted its not friendly terrain and the shipping would be bombable too... so resupply for the Allies is dicey too - definitely worth the risk for the reward IMHO.

IIRC his Zeroes are 7/9 w/o droptanks 11/14 with them... I think the Oscars are 5/6 and 9/11, but am not sure without looking it up.

I really would be worried about the Betty's & Nells against your surface forces more... he could do significant damage even without escorts. Have you looked up the air superiority shortcut? it will put pretty circles on the map <sarcasm alert!> showing his abilities and its helpful, I just don't remember which shortcut key does it... [:(]

Your opponent needs someone as an advisor... It seems he is more defensive than offensive if your dictating terms this early in the game (CR type players excepted!!!)[;)]

Krapppp!!!! Wessel Island and Gove got lit up this turn by some sort of Japanese patrol. I have the ships that got detected bugging out as they have no air cover and are well within strike range of Darwin.

On one hand it sucks that Gunnulf suddenly discovered his planes have a naval search function. On the other hand it is certainly expected for him to do it so I really cannot complain much.

Ok, I held up the invasion force for a turn because it was scattered all over the place and a lot of ships needed refuelling so we stop at Horn Island tonight and leave tomorrow. The detection issue could be a huge problem. I will pray for bad weather. Depending on the situation he can get up to 4 days earlier notice of the invasion and that certainly puts things more in his favor. It might even cause the invasion to be delayed but time will tell on that one. I am showing 50 fighters and over 80 bombers plus 83 auxiliary aircraft at Darwin. I am guessing the auxiliary are transports moving supply to his forward units. If my cruisers cannot take the airfield out on DD-1 it will be a s**t storm. The base is still 4/7 so if I understand the rules correctly even 10% damage to the runway will prevent level bombers from launching.

Plan is DD-3 launch invasion fleet from horn including a DMS TF, BB TF, AP TF, CA TF, CV TF. Move 5 spaces toward darwin and pray I dont get detected. DD-2 Move 5 spaces closer to Darwin and pray I dont get detected (This will be closer than Wessel Island so it would require bad weather or luck). DD -1 DMS fleet enters Darwin Harbor to detect and remove mines. CA fleet bombards Darwin to take down airfield. DDay - BB Bombardment of Darwin & TF Unload. DD+1 TF Unload and Combat. DD+2 removal of surface forces. A 5 day window for him to get enough air or surface forces in the area. It is a long time...

I left a transport at Wessel Islands with some support troops for the brigade I dropped there and some supply. We will see how aggressive gunnulf is next turn or so.

Meruke got several more engineer units the other day and the runway construction is exploding. It went from 50 - 73% in one day on lvl 3. So lvl 4 airfields at Merauke within a few days and likely level 5 within a week or 10 days maybe. Wessel island is up to 40% lvl 1 and Horn Island is 90% to lvl 4.

Troops are advancing on Daly Waters and Gunnulf is retreating. 120 miles until 2 divisions of aussie troops plus armor reach that base. Their supply is mostly in the red though. Gove might be able to help with supply but at it's farthest range. I am not sure how much if any a dot hex will help supply either. Live and learn.

There are 3 damaged BB's left at Pearl Harbor. They have 130+ days each. I am getting them ready to move to Seattle because I think they will repair much more quickly there. They will move as soon as the repaired ones arrive at Pearl Harbor.

Stuff is getting ready to move in India but it will take a few days.

Kodiak is almost 6/6 and I might move the engineers to Adak to start the expansion in the Aleutians.

RE: Just Another AAR... Wargmr (A) Gunnulf (J)

Your opponent needs someone as an advisor... It seems he is more defensive than offensive if your dictating terms this early in the game (CR type players excepted!!!)

I am really more worried about the Zero's. I have 4 CV's including the smaller wasp with me and they are carrying all of the fighters the navy has on 6 carriers. I will be sporting over 200 fighters on my CV decks.

My fear however is that he can attack with fighters from multiple bases and wear that CAP down quickly. He is also going to be able to fly in fresh LBA assets the longer the conflict lasts.

I am guessing we will know by Thursday ;]
