RE: Southern Waters
Spoke with Michael earlier today and sounded this plan out. I am committing to it. Next turn I get the KB heads south...

RE: Southern Waters
Orders go out.
Prepare for FLEET ACTION: Tahiti Region.
1. KB begins a movement to the south. They have 6 full AOs with them so that will get them there and have fuel for fighting.
2. Ise and Hyuga head for Jaliut to refuel and reprovision. They will fix it so the 2nd ID and an SNLF Assault Brigade can finish off the Marines at Pago Pago. As Robert E. Lee would say "those people" need to be cleared out of there. Need the AF ASAP.
3. I am deploying the 9th Air Fleet. Part of the force is at Rabaul. Two Air Flotilla HQs are loading for Southern Waters. A fast 18 Kn AK TF is loading 54 Zero, 48 Val, 48 Kate and 50,000 supply are also moving there.
Must continue to look weak down here to try and draw the Allies into the trap. Will be vulnerable for about 10-14 days and then will be ready for a fight.

"Scratch ONE (more) FLATTOP!"
March 8, 1942
Second Battle of Johnston Isle
Damn.
Air Search spotted a TF moving in on Johnston Isle on the 7th. I decided to turn the KB around to make itself seen (just like Halsey after Coral Sea) and then RACE for the south to set the stage for an ambush down in Tahiti. Air Search reported a STF coming in (probably for a bombardment) so I felt that this was a good, safe move. Holy CATS guys! Read on...

"Scratch ONE FLATTOP!"
SE Johnston Isle
Kido Butai
Vc-Adm Yamaguchi has found these to be VERY good waters after the Battle of Johnston Isle 8 weeks ago. During that fight, his planes sank the USS Enterprise. Though not known for sure at the time, intelligence has now confirmed the loss of the Big E. Yamaguchi's excited for the planned ambush of the American Fleet in Tahitian Waters cannot be denied. His aggressive nature craves for this sort of mission.
Before that can be done, however, this day sends his float planes into the skies expecting to find a Bombardment TF moving in on Johnston. Imagine his amazement when several scouts report--at nearly the same time--that major portion of the surviving American Fleet lies just 180 miles NE of his force! The reports are confusing initially as there appear to be two TF. The largest is a Battleship laden group headed for Johnston. The seond provides the CAP needed to protect it. This CAP is done by CV-5 USS Yorktown. Wildcats make their presence known quickly as several FP are shot down watching the reporting on the two TFs.
Flush with excitement--and a FOUR-to-ONE superiority in Carriers--Yamaguchi orders a massed strike. Kates had been ordered the previous day to shift from bombs to the much more dangerous TTs and that early decision proves its worth this day. The Kido Butai turns into the wind and a Strike Force of 49 Zero, 70 Val, and 85 Kate take to the air. They are commanded by Commander Akira of the Zuikaku.
The launch is done quickly and the massed strike flies unerringly towards its target.
Nearly 30 warships wait the arrival of the Sea Eagles. Amazingly the count ends up at CV Yorktown, BBs Maryland, West Virginia, Colorado and the modern Washington, CAs New Orleans, Portland, Chicago, Minneapolis, and San Fransisco, and CL Phoenix. At least 12-16 DDs accompany the TFs. The Zeros encounter only 10 Wildcats at any distance from the TF. While easily swept aside to start with, more and more F4Fs climb towards the Strike Force. A great many are shot down by the diving Zeros but a few still manage to get in a shot down several Vals and Kates.
Morning Strike
The Strike reaches their targets and chaos ensues.
Yorktown is immediately hit by a pair of TTs and a massive AMMO Storage explosion follows the second hit. Two bombs add to the damage as the ship slows rapidly.
Maryland takes 4 TTs, West Virginia is SUNK by 6 bombs and 5 TTs, Washington gets smashed by 1 bomb and 3 TTs, Colorado is hit by more then 9 bombs and 2 TTs.
The Heavy Cruisers get pummeled Portland (1B/1TT), Minneapolis EXPLODES after one bomb hit detonates the forward magazine, Chicago takes a TT,
Two DDs take a single bomb each.
Counter-Punch
The Yorktown does get a small strike in the air just prior to the arrival of the Japanese attack. This feeble attack of 5 F4F and 9 SBD SHOULD BE easily swept aside but it isn't. Only 8-10 Zeros engage the attack group allowing 8 SBD to enter into their dives! Luckily 4 SBD dive on BC Haruna and miss. The remaining four dive on the Flagship. Akagi blasts two of them out of the air with her AA. The remaining pair drop their bombs and...they...just...MISS! Damn. Waaaaaaaay too much excitement for a 14 plane American strike!
Afternoon Japanese Strike
Absolutely jubilant over the morning's success, the Japanese cannot wait to get in a last KILLER strike for the day. This time 49 Zero, 89 Val, and 86 Kate thunder off the decks of CARDIV1 and CARDIV5. Results are OUTSTANDING!
CV Yorktown takes a single bomb and SINKS!
BB Maryland sinks after 1 TT and 3 more bombs, Washington takes 4 more bombs, Colorado sinks under the weight of 3 bombs and 3 TTs.
CA New Orleans is sunk under 4 bombs and 3 TT, Chicago takes 3 more bombs, San Fransisco BLOWS UP from another magazine explosion.
CL Phoenix is hit by 3 Bombs and 1 TT.
Three more DDs take single bombs hits as well.
Magnificent!
TOTALS
SUNK: CV Yorktown, BBs Maryland, West Virginia, and Colorado, CAs New Orleans, Minneapolis, and San Fransisco.
DAMAGED: BB Washington, CAs Portland and Chicago, and 5 DDs.
Total Losses for Kido Butai: 8 Zero, 8 Val, and 6 Kate.
BANZAI!

There are games in which you simply should never send anything to the area as the dice gods have declared that "tho shall die", sounds like this is one of those areas. I am hoping to avoid that fate in my game.

RE: "Scratch ONE FLATTOP!"
This appears to be a textbook example of what happens when a plan is created and then unchanged regardless of circumstance.
At this point it is probably better this way.
Oh, and Congratulations!

The Second Batle of Johnston Isle
March 9, 1942
Second Battle of Johnston Isle: Day TWO
Flush from the victory yesterday the Sea Eagles of Japan seek to finish off cripples fleeing the sight of the victory. many of them are in bad shape so some simple 'help' should be all that is needed!
Morning Strike
Air Search immediately finds the American warships desperately trying to get home to the safety of Pearl Harbor. The four carriers turn into the wind and launch a Strike of 49 Zero, 49 Val, and 80 Kate. There are no TTs left in the carriers so the Kates carry bombs. Flying just 100 miles, the aviators are stunned to see CV Yorktown still afloat! The Strike Commander divides his aircraft with two dozen going after the crippled CV and about a dozen vectored after each of the other ships nearby. Results:
CV Yorktown takes 8 Bombs and is NOW SUNK!
CA's Portland and Chicago are further damaged by 7 and 2 bombs respectively.
CL Phoenix takes a bomb and slips beneath the waves.
DDs Gridely (2B), Patterson (2B), Ralph Talbot (1B), and Blue (1B) are then hit.
Japan loses a Val and Kate
Afternoon Strike
The final Strike of this battle is launch in the early afternoon. Storm clouds are beginning to gather in the west after two days of beautiful weather. The Strike is a massive: 49 Zero, 90 Val, and 93 Kate. WOW!
CA's Portland and Chicago are sunk taking a further 5 B and 2 B each
DDs Gridley, Blue, Ralph Talbot, McCall, Henley, and Jarvis are sunk.
No Japanese losses with this strike.
Totals:
SUNK: CV Yorktown, CAs Portland and Chicago, CL Phoenix, and 6 DD
Time to head for the Pagoda. The CVs turn SW to depart the area. In a final effort to clean-up any remaining stragglers, the 2 BC and 4 DDs depart the screen to lunge east five hexes and then return to Johnston.
John Commentary:
1. The Yorktown MUST be sunk. The afternoon raid didn't find her whatsoever.
2. The advice of the Forum to set all Strike Planes to the same altitude TRULY works! All Vals and Kates were set to 14,000 Ft with half my Zeros at 14,000 and the other half at 23,000Ft. In four strikes the KB launched ALL of its strike planes 3 out of 4 phases. AMAZING!
3. In RA Japanese pilot experience starts WAY LOWER then IRL. The amount of successful attacks, coupled with very few losses, has massively raised my XP on the pilots. As soon as my CVs leave the battlefield, they let the pilots rest to 99% and then shift to training. This three-fold set of events has really allowed for some serious work with my pilots.
4. TWO US CVs are now gone. The American situation is getting to be critical now. They still have deterrence and strike ability but I have not lost a single CV and am adding them to the Fleet (CV Junyo). My opponents really need to THINK right now and not react!
Am Posting the last two email exchanges so you know what was happening in their heads.

RE: The Second Batle of Johnston Isle
These are the notes from Jim.
Email ONE:
JUST so you know HOW MUCH your in my head... The plane counts in that attack are mind boggling, as big or bigger than historical P.H. AND in addition to the +40 planes as CAP, AND you still have 40-80 carrier based planes near Perth? Fog of War? Teleportation? damned if it matters now – it’s just carnage, pure unadulterated carnage. I’m up at 4:30 and haven’t slept at all, even though I tried twice... I’m waiting on Larry to re-send your turn to me – he sent me last night’s turn from hell again instead of THIS turn from hell...
excerpt from e-mail to Larry earlier tonight
“I’m just sooooo bummed, I have NEVER been beaten like this, I’ve made stupid mistakes and re started with Tom in other games – but this is crazy! He just attacked again with 90 Vals 90 Kates and 40 Zeroes, that means it’s the KB and that would mean its EVERY major carrier by Johnston Is., so where did he get the ones for the Perth attacks? I’m not saying cheating – I’m saying he manages his ships like I only WISH I could...”
Email TWO:
Does the KB matter now? just pull up in P.H. next – obviously I can’t stop you...
I cannot figure out the math, you had at least 2 CV/CVL with approximately 75 planes attacked Pago Pago on the 2nd of the month, you had at least 2 CV’s worth of planes (50-80) by Perth in the same time frame...
That leaves Shokaku/Zuikaku/Kaga/Akagi/Hiryu/Soryu as the KB... so if you did the CARDIV thing... HOW IN THE HELL DID you meet up by Johnston Is. in 6 days (over 400 miles from Pago Pago) to have over 260 planes (80F/90DB/90TB) to find ONE TF and with 16 of my subs and ALL of those planes searching that area... B-17’s doing long range search on 30 degree headings, all of the SBD’s on 50% search, all of the floatplanes, and NOBODY SAW NUTTIN!!!
It wasn’t even a bombardment TF, it was to drop a few bombs on Johnston Is to tweak you and run back to P.H. That’s what I did a last week and the subs were there then and didn’t see or find anybody last week either – which is why I decided to drop a couple bombs to get your attention.
You had to have oilers fueling them to keep them out there so long – I’ve got subs by Kwajalein, Truk, all of the possible regular refueling points, and I cant/haven’t find ONE AO/TK? The only way that I didn’t have covered with subs or search planes was to the west of P.H. where my freighters are and you didn’t sink any of them... so you either ran through/over 16 subs set to the west, north, and south of Johnston Is., AND we missed the entire KB in a 210-270 degree search radius from P.H.
AND TO KNOW where/when my TF was, with a CAP of 45 fighters, and they never saw or splashed any recon/search planes prior to this turn... I don’t know, I just don’t know...
Obviously I’m not the player I thought I was...
For reader clarification--my CV deployment currently is:
Australia: CARDIV2—Hiryu, Soryu, and 2 CVLs (192 Planes)
Tahiti: 2 CVL (60 Planes)
Johnston: CARDIV1/CARDIV5—Akagi, Kaga, Shokaku, and Zuikaku (297 Planes)
Paramushiro Jima: CV Junyo and 2 CVE (103 Planes)

I tried to plant some seeds in their heads, but their sails are furled. As an afterthought, I see a bit of Mandrake and Sprior in their play without the tactical or practical consequences. I still read that AARs deflection of IJ from Australia with wonder.

I think the sails might have caught fire and burned up last turn...

RE: The Second Batle of Johnston Isle
[:D] No doubt! I know what that lack of sleep thing is. It is sooo hard to gauge the proper time as allies to expose the A team. A simple raid can easily turn into a debacle. The campaign is already headed for a very, very long two years.

RE: The Second Batle of Johnston Isle
They erroneously assumed the CVLs in the South Seas were a CARDIV, then thought they had all your CVs spotted given the Perth Op. In fact, their key assumption was wrong. The real problem, IMHO, is why they are sailing a key asset (Yorktown) into an exposed condition to "drop a few bombs" on an unimportant island. Even if their plan came off they gain nothing. From the strategic perspective, a high risk, low reward effort. As far as avoiding subs and air search, remind me - did you move flank into attack position? That would negate the screen.
