Combat Report
April 12-27, 1942
Australia

A series of counter-attacks have placed the NW Aussie Offensive into a bit of a conundrum. West Australia is solidly Japanese and clean-up work is taking place there.

NW Australia
The Aussies take back Alice Springs on the 18th. I simply could not fly in enough men and build Forts up fast enough to hold the base. Too bad. Wanted to keep it but that is no longer an option.

With Tennant Creek belonging to the Aussies again as well, I find that we must get Darwin dealt with ASAP. The 55th and 56th ID are about to enter the hex. There are SIXTEEN units present. One word: YUM! Have a Fast TF on the way to Gove so that is not a retreat option. Will move in in 3-4 days and see what he has there. Am hoping for a big POW haul again.

Western Australia
Aussie units are fleeing to the east from Busselton, Albany, and Esperance. Have broken my one ID into its three parts and sent it to Kalgoorlie. The Cavalry Reg and 2 TK Reg it joins should easily serve to smack these units one or two more times before being done. Two more Cavalry units are about 7 days away as well as a Brigade of Inf. Once these arrive, this is what shall defend Western Kangarooland.

Just to show I lurk as well, " Kaigun: a STF of 2 CA, 1 CL, and 6 DD just arrived at Umnak."  Do you mix CA's & CL's?  I thought the line of thought was to keep away from mixed packages.

Hi Lecivius.

I do when it makes sense. Mixed in a new Radar-Equipped CL to provide some added advantage to the CAs. Don't do this often but thought it might help up here. Once the CVs arrive that CL will float over there to help coordinate CAP.

Nice question.

Combat Report
April 12-27, 1942
CBI Theatre

The CV Raid by CARDIV2 begins on April 12th. The CVs are not spotted as they close on the western side of India. As hoped, the CVs go into destructive mode versus a batch of ASW TF operating here harassing my I-Boats. The CVs sink 6 AMc, 2 KV, and 3 PG/B. The 13th sees a convoy of 2 PB and 5 AK get clobbered. The carriers are not invulnerable so I move them away on the 13th and stalk towards Diego Garcia and Addu Atoll. These targets are thoroughly scouted over 2-3 days and each gets a Bombardment TF sent to them. Both bases only have a single unit on them. Hmmm... Leads one to start thinking a little bit! The CVs retire and refuel on the 18th and then head for Singers to meet-up with the rest of the Fleet.

We continue seeing heavy air action over Chittagong and Akyab. I now have over 150 Zero and Oscar present at Rangoon and Magwe. Additional construction/engineering units are arriving in Burma so we're proceeding with base construction as well as Fort work. Same can be said for Port Blair.

We're now looking at a June 1st Invasion of Cocanada and Viza. All Japanese units are gathering at Singapore for the Operation.

Combat Report
April 12-27, 1942
Java

The single biggest surprise of the campaign has been Java. I seriously underestimated the the Dutch ability to fight. A single ID and Brigade was not enough to do the job. Got COCKY and have paid for it by having to adjust plans by bringing in two more IDs (from Western Australia). This much larger force arrives at Soerabaja and battle begins in earnest on the 22nd. The First Attack drops Forts from 3 to 2 but doesn't get a 1-1. Casualties are pleasantly low so that helps a bunch. The second attack occurs on the 26th and does see a 1-1 as Forts drop to 1. This attack sees strong casualties on both sides (5,177 Japan to Allies 3,730). OUCH! Am waiting a few more days and will then take the base. This will bring a HUGE VP bag! Figure May 1st for the final attack.

Two of the ID here are now 100% prepped for Viza and Cocanada.

Manila

Post by John 3rd »

Here is Manila's screen shot. The Japanese ID were at a little less then 900 when the city fell and are now at over 1,300. Two weeks of R&R in Manila has been good for the troops. Two large convoys are presently on the way to pick-up four of the ID and bring them--as well as Southern Army HQ--to Singapore.

That's fixable, especially given that Luzon produces some supply and Manila will too with the LI status. My fear was a 100% wipeout with the number of troops and ENG squads present.

April 28-May 3, 1942

Combat Report
April 28-May 3, 1942

The Empire is busy shuffling the deck. A MASSIVE concentration of the Kaigun is now complete at Singapore: 6 CV, 4 CVL, 4 BC, 5 BB, 9 CA, 8 CL, and 35 DD rest and get their dings and scratches repaired. Air Crews train, train some more, and then TRAIN! This JAVELIN will be hurled into the IO in the not to distant future...

North Pacific
We have a STF of 2 CA, 1 CL, and 5 DD at Umnak where they have been protecting two convoys unloading there. On the 28th they are unleashed and lunge at Cold Bay where they sink an AK. Lots of shipping is spotted at Kodiak. Order the CV TF of Junyo, Taiyo, and Hosho (2 CA, 1 CL, and 3 DD) to move out SSE. The STF shall join them. We'll not hazard a shipping strike here since there appears to be a bunch of fighters present. Instead, we'll switch out the Vals on Taiyo for 27 Zero and use them to provide LRCAP over the STF as it sweeps into waters of Kodiak hoping to bag shipping.

Central Pacific
Calm. Moving fuel and supplies around. Have been getting a bunch of reinforcements in Tokyo so there are 4-6 Convoys moving to various points bringing CD units and supplies to strategic points. Am overstacked at Midway and Palmyra and need to fix that. Hard to find that optimal combination of troops, BF, Engineers, and CD!

SE Pacific
Have been observing Hiva Oa. A Raiding TF is patrolling NNE of the base and is not observed. This STF of 2 CL and 6 DD stumble on a pair of APs on May 1st. The cry of "MAY DAY. MAYDAY." fills the air waves as two nice large AP are sunk. NICE!

South Pacific
The Nadi Invasion Force has the 2nd ID and BB's Fuso--Yamashiro embedded in it. This Invasion Force shall land within the next two days. They are being followed by another Convoy carrying a large Base Force. Nadi--Suva are the last major objectives left in the South Pacific for Japan.

Philippines
The 5 ID and Southern Army Command have rested for two weeks and the AV has DOUBLED during that time. All ID are now 90%+ in strength. Time to move. From Singapore departs 50 AK--AP to gather these troops and then prepare to combat load them for the IO Operation.

Java
The DAMNED DUTCH are driving me NUTS! Attacks by 2 ID and 3 Reg/Brigades have drawn the Forts down to ZERO. The AF is hit by 100 bombers nearly every day. The last two attacks have resulting in just missing a 2-1 result and ending this USELESS siege. Want to drink heavily everytime I order an attack right now. Have allowed the boys to rest two extra days this time and will order a Shock Attack in two days. Will shift all bombers over to ground attack starting tomorrow. The defense of Soerabaja has become a major thorn in the side of this JFB.

Aussieland
Western Aust
Lookin good. Forts are climbing and there is no sign of Allied response. Have some units hunting down troops that fled into the desert when there bases fell.

NW Aust
Looks like he is trying to push up from Tennant Creek. OK. BRING IT!

Darwin
There, as earlier stated, are SEVENTEEN units in Darwin. Bombers have begun hitting the AF. The 55th ID is waiting on the 56th ID's arrival before moving into the hex. Have taken all the dot bases along the coast so there is nowhere to retreat to (Except Tennant Creek) when the base falls. I want a surrender here.

Sumatra
The enemy has held out at Padang with 5-6 units versus an Inf Reg. This will change tomorrow as two more Regiments enter the fight and the base should fall. All Sumatra is mine at that point. Those three Regiments then will cover Sabang, Padang, and Benkoelen as garrison to prevent any USELESS ideas by the Allies.

Burma
Skipping this for a separate Post.

China
The stack of 17 Chinese units driven out of Sinyang and smashed on that open hex SSW of Sinyang is SMASHED again at hex 84,49. Four Japanese IDs crush the stack and force--catch this--NINE units to surrender in a 403-1 attack. The Japanese lose 182 troops in exchange for 11,463 Chinese (over 1,400 squads!). These Chinese are forced across the river with the Japanese in hot pursuit. Once these troops are force into Ichang then the 4 ID will close into the hex to drive them from MY BASE.

SS Operations
Have 25 SS repairing currently prior to redeployment. Allied SS have been getting more frisky. ASW (air and sea) is doing pretty well at damaging them so it isn't too bad presently.

Engineering:
4-27 Umnak AF-3, Nookanbah AF-3
4-28 Yokohoma AF-8
4-29 Broome AF-4
4-30 Rabaul AF-5, Chiba AF-3
5-2 Ponape AF-3
5-3 Changchun AF-6, Malacca AF-3, Rangiroa AF-3
5-4 Chengting AF-6

Combat Report
April 28-May 3, 1942
Burma

This area gets its own Report this day.

The Allied BOYS are doing something that makes me scratch what little hair I have on my head. The 18th Brit ID appears ALL BY ITSELF approaching Magwe. It is followed by a single small Infantry unit. What the heck?

I direct bombers onto the unit in the clear terrain and have over 100 bombers hitting the Brits every turn. Casualties are about 125-175 everyday. Since Maqwe only had a TK Reg in it, I order in two more TK Reg and a Garrison unit from Rangoon. Other then Imperial Guards these are my only real units available for the time being.

Is this the beginning of an Allied counter-attack? Lordy---I DO HOPE SO!

PLAN
A. We will pay strong attention to the Brits but not attack. I want to LOOK WEAK! Maybe it will draw more units through the jungle into Burma.
B. The more units trapped inside the jungle or in Burma itself means far less to deal with in INDIA when I land there. Would really like to spot one or two of the Aussie ID and then life could be GREAT! The IO Invasion shall be within a month. June 1st is target date.
C. Divide Imperial Guards with one going to Meiktila, one to Mandalay, and the third staying in Lashio. This should be enough to keep the situation stable in Bumra while the IO Op gets ready to roll.
D. Need more AF Support so I load 4 BF and 4 AA units in Japan for Rangoon. This is an 18 Knot Convoy so it will be awhile but not too long.

Reallly need to clear Soerabaja out so I can free up two more ID. Will move more bombers from Clark down to Java to help with a stepped up aerial campaign.

Question

Post by John 3rd »

As I look at the two Posts above a thought crosses my mind that I will throw out for commentary.

There are 10 CV/CVL present in Singapore and I KNOW the British Fleet is in Ceylon. What kind of luck have Japanese players had in attacking a Port in May-June 1942? I would have nearly 600 aircraft available for the attack. Would only use Kates and leave the Vals for Surface Attacks.

Curious as to experiences and/or opinions...

Do you really want to risk your pilots against the british fleet at Ceylon? It is a flaktrap and most players keep a couple of squadrons at CAP duty. Your chance of suprise is very small...

If that is really the 18th British Division smash it, not knowing where the 6th and 7th Aus and 18th British is one of the advantages you have as the Allies. I try never to expose them to sight until Japan commits to a landing or runs right into them. This plus the obvious if you smash the 18th UK he never gets enough replacements for it and all of the other units that use British Squads.

As much as it pains me as an AFB you really need to stay out of an offensive land war with him until you have gotten the Indian army sorted out, upgraded and trained and I don't see how this before the end of 1942 at best. Now, I welcome a defensive land war but an offensive one just does not favor the allies in 1942 in Burma.

I think it would be a bad idea for Japan and as the Allied Player I would welcome it. Now I am playing DBB (so you might have some differences) but there are four air units that arrive here without adding any of the other AA units that arrive and could be placed here. Two Heavy AA Regiments, one Light AA Regiment and one AA Brigade. That does not count the Air HQ or the multiple Fighter Squadrons, Patrols Planes or Radar at the base.

I would withdraw my fleet if I saw you coming to Bombay, let you hit the base take your losses and then hit you with all the Land Based Air I could find and try a surface counter attack at night with my slow BB's under cover of fighters from Ceylon during the day. Now if the odds looked really bad or I thought I could not pull this off ---- I would skip the air counter attack/surface counter attack and just whittle away at you with my fighter as best I could. But simile every time you lost a pilot.

RE Burma - If they are coming then you will destroy them. Bagging British and Aussie divisions is a double whammy due to lack of replacements.

RE Ceylon - I did raid Colombo with KB. Used only Kates to reduce flak losses. Results were iffy. My losses were minimal but the enemy wisely threw out a few sacrificial lamb TFs that drew naval attacks and reduced the effectiveness of the day 1 port strike. On day 2 I put the Kates on "port only" - which of course is always a risk. Unfortunately weather reduced the joy of the day 2 strike but we did blow up a CL and damage several BBs. I had a sub wolfpack waiting for escape attempts that sank Warspite. Read my AAR for a long discussion on whether I should do this and the strength of the local AA. I had Kates at 14K and flak losses were fine.

I believe it can be done, but use Glens to recon, as the Allied player can make the move untenable if he attends to his business. Too many enemy fighters makes it tough. Have a strong picket line so you can feel comfortable going port attack all the way with Kates. Doable but risky. Then again, had I gone port attack only on day one, I had 96 enemy ships in the barrel.

The deployment of the 18th ID is a GIFT and I know it. Man---I REALLY want to find one or both Ausiie IDs. Will let the 18th do whatever it is doing while weakening it and will then seek to DESTROY it.

CEYLON:
1. When I land at Viza and other points, I would be willing to bet that the BOYS will sortie the Eastern Fleet. It has been a pattern to this point. If they do then I shall sink them in 10,000Ft of water.
2. Michael and I talked about AA Fire dangers with a Port Strike.
3. I plan to move 12-15 SS into the waters east of Ceylon and along the west coast of India.

Perhaps I can flush the Fleet out of their Anchorage and hit them while running away? Lots of possibilities.

To get the Gents to come out I might keep the balance of the KB back at Port Blair so I look somewhat weak. This might prod them to advance and then I close the door from behind.

Does get the creative juices going. Doesn't it?

Good Points Sir, however, I think the guys have moved nearly all of their fighter squadrons to Chittagong and Akyab. They are trying to fly LRCAP over the 18th ID and I am smashing the paltry 7-9 Hurricanes and P-40s there everyday. The AA, on the other hand, it a real danger.

Are you thinking of taking Ceylon or merely VP hunting?
There is no question in my mind your opponents reaction will be swift and uncoordinated. The urge to hit back will outweigh any sane defensive measures deigned to impale you. I have no idea what they have on Ceylon, but should you ever try that with me, you will pay! HEI![8D]

ps I may be interesting to see what search assets he has assigned there and how much attention he is paying to rear areas. With such paltry search resources available to the allies at this point, you could well slip in to peek, with a minimal reaction. As a footnote, those small search squadrons seem to always fatigue and lose moral quickly for me. It makes setting search arcs a royal, pardon the pun, pain in the tush.
