Poll Discussion Area

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

I agree with MR's comments on Vietnam. I think there is more than enough diversity to justify a stand-alone game...

+1 Flashpoint Campaigns: Vietnam ( FC:V)

I'd buy it tomorrow!

Honestly, the openness in which this game has been designed, if the Dev's could extend up the date ranges (past and future) and allow for for adding completing new OOB's (as opposed to just editing the USER ones) there is really very little limit to what this game can cover. We just need new OOB and appropriate maps.

My thoughts exactly.

For example, if you add in the air mobility feature it can be used in Vietnam or the Americas. Both are interesting ideas.

But air mobility should include parachutists as well as helicopters. Who knows? Maybe the world really does need an OTS version of Market Garden. [:)]

As the designers look forward, maybe some thought could be given to simplifying map and OOB creation. And no, I don't have any new creative ideas or constructive criticisms. I just want altitude proliferation. [:D]

Just out of curiosity I have counted the 20th century scenarios for the venerable 'The Operational Art of War' that were created by the users and posted at the Rugged Defence' website.
With a grain of salt it gives some indications of the interests of a large community interested in hex/turn based, realistic wargames. I think that any 'sequel' to FCRS cannot be just aimed at the existing FC community, but must be able to reach a larger audience of players to be
successful. Btw TOAW had great (but certainly not flashy) tools for map and OOB creation....(wink wink).

OK, here is the scenario distribution in time:

1900-1913 6 (pre-WWI)
1914-1918 43 (WWI)
1919-1938 42 (pre-WWII)
1939-1945 376(WWII)
1946-1973 105 (mostly Korea,Vietnam,Arab-Israeli Wars)
1976-1989 37 (mostly Cold war, Desert Storm)
1990-2014 110 (lots of hypothetical)

As for "easier" tools. Map making is already well defined with HexDraw and the art files. OOBs and data will be easier when I finally get Mod Guide 4 done and stuff get explained in one place. The data being in a spreadsheet is as easy as it gets for editing. The only real help would be having some data validation tools to check data files. That is on our list of nice to have items when we have time to work it right along with an internal tile based mapping system.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

WWII has been done to death—not that I wouldn't buy Flashpoint Campaigns: WWII.

The Korean War, Vietnam War, Yom Kippur War, or Operation Desert Storm would be amazing. They had some really epic firefights and tactical engagements

for me i'd like to see some what if type battles, from any period or time frame, i'd like to be able to mix and match with the editor and fight battles with tanks from set time frames that may have not seen much combat, some of the wonder weapons that weren't around in great numbers maybe or never made the battlefield.

but at a push Arnhem (could do with an update, or WWII Western Desert would get my vote, The Korean War, Vietnam War etc wouldn't be my cup of tea or desert storm either and most ww2 stuff which i love btw has been done a lot already but would replay it :)

I would imagine that you would find that the scenarios/campaigns I would do for WWII haven't been 'done a lot already'. I look for different, unusual fights. The standards like Arnhem, the Battle of the Bulge and Stalingrad would take a back seat to other lesser battles and campaigns. Such as the Crossing of the Vire, Operation Bagration, Battles for Khar'kov in the winter of 42/spring of 43, The Reichswald, Breaking the Siegfried Line, Breaking the Gustav Line, Kasserine Pass, etc...

Or maybe not.

Operation Bagration, Battles for Khar'kov in the winter of 42/spring of 43, Kasserine Pass.

I really like these three, also intrinsic C&C capabilities would not be so asymmetric as in 1941...I'd throw in the Dnepr battles in 43/44 if one wants airborne operations (Kanev!). I'will also plug in my idea of following a division' battles unit over the same time frame and front as it had got good feedback from other users [:)]

The Division level battles were done for Combat Mission for the 3rd Armored Division. There were 10 individual scenarios done for that one. It would be nice to link them together into one campaign instead of just individual battles. I'm sure I could resurrect those for FPC if we decide to go to WW2 at some point. I'd also like to start with a German unit and follow it all the way through the war. When we did PCO, Rick was working on doing that with the 3rd Panzer Division. That could be done here too.

There are a number of battles that are often overlooked. 1941 in Russia is grossly misunderstood. There were some very vicious fights in the first 6 months of the war. My favorite part of the war is what I term the 'End of the War'. The months of 1945. That means most of the 'normal' big famous battles are done. Now all that's left is the dirty work of finishing the war. Battles like the Ruhr Pocket, clearing the Siegfried Line, crossing the Rhine, the Seelow Heights, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, etc...

This is how marked up my Google Earth is with battle locations I wanted to get actual battleground locations for. There are a few scenarios worth of battles on that map. [:D]

Nice collection!

A few places on your list looked quite familiar! I thought of a few well known units that 'd be a good match.

- 2nd Armored Division . Torch, Husky, Cobra, Bulge.... Add an hypothetical battle where Patton invades Russia and makes it to the Red Square on a souped up M26 Pershing :).
- Grossdeutschland: Karkhov, Citadel, yup Targu Frumos, Prussia...did I mention a permanently attached battalion of Tigers?
- 62nd/8th Guards Army. Fought all the way from Stalingrad to Berlin..but I am sure you know that :) Not sure if it crossed Grossdeutschland's path in Rumania...

Following a Division (or maybe a Red Army Corp) over a couple of years 'd be a good way to explore different operational situations and at the same time make the game more immersive for the players.
There 'd be time to get attached to a specific company or platoon and the excitement of getting newer/heavier equipment. A nice addition 'd be having equipment data for players to build additional scenarios in the same general areas, but with different units. I'd guess picking a US unit to focus on 'd be attractive to a large market, but the other options 'd be very interesting as well.

2nd Guards Tank Corps had a lot of research work done on it to do a campaign series once upon a time as well. [:D]

7th British Armored Division would be an easy one to do too.

I would much prefer a Modern game setting, such as Ukraine/NATO vs Russia, rather than another WWII game.

I am probably in the minority but if this game disappears in to world war two, I will lose interest. I was delighted when I got this because of its setting as much as because how good the game engine was. Vietnam, the mid east, theoretical conflicts with india vs pakistan, north and south korea
(or going back to the fifties), china and japan or america in Taiwan! (ukraine vs russia - too soon?) with this excellent engine and I would be lapping it up. WWII there's so much already.

This game SERIES will not disappear into anything. We intend on covering WWII at some point but it will not go exclusively anywhere. This is not a one off game but a series of games designed with the intent to cover as much of the combat spectrum from 1936 through near future conflicts as possible.

We are only restricted by time and resources as to where we go. The goal is to end up with the system covering it all.

WWII there's so much already.

Perhaps, but no game has good Command & Control as Flashpoint (and Command Ops, but that is a different beast). So actually there isn't much resembling what FC can offer for WWII games. FC is new stuff. They should be able to take a good slice of the WWII market IF they want to.

A WWII setting offers a number of advantages:

- a different scale (range and unit size, pace of events) from Cold War scenarios, so hey, variety.
- opportunity for evenly matched/challenging battles with well researched set ups.

In any case, given the good taste developers show for picking interesting battles (i.e not another Bulge game, FFS!) I am looking forward to how FC develops.
