One of the things that (tiny tiny drop of resentment in a great sea of awesome) irks me in WiF in general is that the battle of the Atlantic is a bit too easy for the Allies. IRL, the Brits and their associated dependents lost about 14 millionish tonnes of shipping. That's around 80 convoy points, if you go for the 6 CP= 1 million tons.

I don't think I've ever seen a game where the British lost 80 convoys. Not even close. Too easy to stuff the 0 boxes with airplanes, put a cruiser in the 4, and suddenly it's really hard to get the sub thing going.


And the strategic bombing campaign. I recently saw a breakdown of the Luftwaffe losses, and I hadn't realized just how many of their planes were being shot down over Germany itself to try to parry the strat bombers. It was an astoundingly high figure, and that's again something I don't see too much of in WiF.

Yes, but historically the allies were pretty bad with merchant shipping during the first years of the war.
So comparing the naval war in the atlantic to history is akin to comparing the Russian campaign with history : why do German corps retreat in better positions when, historically, Hitler would stick them in place to be more easily destroyed ?

By april 1944 the war in the air was won by the allies (cost was heavy on allies side too) in the sense that Luftwaffe was no longer a threat.

This allowed the allies to have practically total air superiority for D-Day in june.

The sub war in Atlantic I see it that way. It will push pressure on the Commonwealth to protect the convoys in a lot of sea zones. Commonwealth has almost to do a naval action in the first impulse of each turn to protect the convoys. Protection of the convoys cost oil each turn to Commonwealth (when you play with oil) and later USA. By 1941-42, it is putting pressure on Commonwealth's economy, later with U.S. lend lease this will be easier.
