Notes/Plans:
Mixed emotions on the outcome of Tarakan raid. Need better aircraft (Avengers please!!) and pilots still need months of training to be proficient in hitting CAs with torpedoes and DDs with 1000 lb bombs. DS and separate TFs will head for Balikpapan for one day only of refueling and then back to Soerabaja to reload sorties and torpedoes on CV/CVLs. I expect to find sub converging on both bases and points in between.

Soerabaja - I have spoken to John before on the importance of this base to Allies. I use it for short term repairs on subs and keep them deployed. It is the ONLY relatively safe size 7 or larger port for the Allies at war's beginning. I will be able to reload both CAs and BCs main guns here!! If I was to play Japan with this mod or RA, I would seriously consider an early invasion (mid-December) of Denpasar with its size 3 AF and have an Air HQ there to close down this base and with a capture of Palembang, a semi-blockade of Java.

Post by BBfanboy »

Does Japan get better damage control in this Scenario?
With the number of bomb hits taken the day before and then on the 7th, all four of those CAs should be toast - level 4 port or no.

Incidentally, I don't arm my Devastators with torpedoes at all since they rarely hit and almost never explode (about one in ten of the rare hits). Armed with 2X 500 lb bombs and attacking at 1000 feet they can get hits and do a lot of damage. Especially good at hitting DDs when nothing else seems to. Even poor skill in Low Nav does not seem to keep them from getting some hits.
Later on when torps get a lot better and Avengers are the mainstay, I go back to torps if there are ships bigger than a CL detected.

Notes/Plans:
Marquesas Islands - John seems to have small SC TF of 5 ships (probably a CL with 4 DDs) to see what I have. At Nuka Hiva, I have 3 AVD with a PBY group of 5 planes. I have troops at San Fran prepping for this base and Hiva Oa, but I may not get a chance to reinforce.

Last turn John wrote that I'll know more in less than a week rather than in Feb/March time frame. This reinforces my thoughts that the WHOLE SoPac is in danger with NZ being isolated. The 20th ID from Korea just took Rabaul. Intel Reports show 2nd & 56 ID at Christmas. There is at least two Assault Divisions in play.

There will be no quick counter on my part. I will proceed with securing the eastern Aleutians with a probable counter invasion of Umnak (troops prep already in 40s). Once PP are not needed there, they will go for troops in route to Cape Town bound for India.

We are barely a month in, I can afford to be patient. Can John?? [;)]

Does it concern you that he has Port Moresby so early? Seems like Australia is up next ... and he did take the whole enchilada in a game several years ago.
Wargamr's AAR seems an excellent defensive strategy for Australia.

I had evac PM already, so he got it cheap. With the Assault Divisions and now the 20th ID from Korea down here, whatever I had sent there would have been crushed. Knowing John, he will send somebody to Normanton and march down the road for Townsville and Cairns. Its clear terrain and I'll be Russian and exchange terrain for time.

Even down to Grambier Islands at southern map edge to close off anything getting to NZ and beyond?? With John, you never know. [:D]

John was frustrated that this 'trap' didn't work. After seeing the poor results of my "Death Star" at Tarakan, I'm not too surprised to see this result. Of course, they are ordered due east to open up some running room.

Aleutians - My wait of John sending something up north is over. His CVEs are here, but I was able to get troops and supplies into Cold Bay and just supplies into Dutch Harbor. Both have over 100 AV and forts are at 2 and growing at each. Will he just reinforce Umnak or go for more??

Some more thoughts this time around...

Key:
TT = Torpedo;
bb = ground bombardment;
c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits;
AV = Assault Value;
ID = Infantry Division;
AD = Assault Division (really 3x SNLF formed into a Brigade);
DC = Depth Charged;
(*) = destroyed aircraft;
If odds are bold, they are the Allies;
BG = Bomber Group of 48 planes (4 x 12 bomber squadrons);
FG fighter group = 25 fighter planes if American;

Landings: Upolu (Samoa); Buin

CVs:
Japan - With my DS going dark again, John has done same as "I think" he will move her to SoPac to cover more invasions
KB: MIA again
CVL/CVEs:

Allies:
Death Star (DS) - CVs Lexington & Enterprise; CVLs Charlotte, Jacksonville, Wellington, Melbourne, and Hermes - at Melbourne (warships with 4 or more system damage disbanded into port and ordered pierside for repairs - about 10 days for the big BC)
Mini-DS - CV Saratoga & Yorktown, CVL King's Mountain - 26 East of Dutch Harbor;

Subs:
S-27 damaged enough by DCs at Umnak to head back for repairs
6 Allied subs fire torpedoes on 27th without any hits...[:(]
Grayling gets TT hit on xAK unloading at Umnak in afternoon...finally!
ASW attack near Pearl Harbor at 191,88 [20 NE of Pearl]

Japanese Ships
DD Hayate

Allied Ships
SS Trout

SS Trout launches 2 torpedoes at DD Hayate

John is keeping a small SC TF in between Hawaii and San Fran looking for lightly escorted transports. As a result, I've switched my 2 LB-30 groups at Pearl from training in GrdB to NavB. Since their range is 19/24, maybe I can cause a scare if I spot them again.
Saury takes 19 system damage at Merak and heads back to Soerabja for repairs

Surface Action:

India: -

Burma: -
Myitkyina - elements of 1st Raiding Rgt take empty base

China:
Yenan - my troops are now 2 SW of base on trail
27th - 51 Sally hit troops trying to dig in before his troops arrive;
28th - 46 sally hit troops while 23 Lily head to NW of base
Wenchow -
Ground combat at Wenchow (89,58)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 26554 troops, 222 guns, 91 vehicles, Assault Value = 1250

Defending force 15937 troops, 38 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 459

Japanese adjusted assault: 247

Allied adjusted defense: 2587

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 10 (fort level 3)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), leaders(+), fatigue(-), experience(-)
Attacker: fatigue(-)

Japanese ground losses:
3404 casualties reported
Squads: 7 destroyed, 312 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 12 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 9 disabled
Guns lost 18 (1 destroyed, 17 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
79 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 9 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
17th Division
15th Division
22nd Division

Defending units:
100th Chinese Corps
25th Group Army
14th Chinese Base Force

Good!! Keep these three divisions over here where they cannot hurt me around Kukong.
Kukong - 21 Sonia
Changteh - ground bb NE of base across river
Changsha - ground bb both days by Japan to SE of base; almost 40 1e bombers hit base (I'm able to repair damage, but cannot make any progress on fort building)

Philippines:
Cebu -
Manila -
27th - ground bb
28th - about 140 bombers hit AF and troops; ground bb
Jolo -

Borneo:
Balikpapan -
Kudat - 15th NG wipes out RN BF when capturing base (Bought out next day to be rebuilt in Aden in 30 days).
Kuching -

Sumatra:
Medan -
Tandjoengpinang - 8 Zeros with 9 Sally hit base; 21st ID easily overpowers Dutch defenders

Java:
Batavia -
27th - 10 Zero & 13 Oscars escort in 6 Betty and 18 Nell = 2 HDML sunk
28th - 13 Zeros escort in 16 Betty & 29 Nell switch back to hit the AF which was getting close enough to be repaired to allow air groups back in; 8 Vals do better work in sinking 1 of 2 HDMLs vs torpedoes from Betty/Nell;
Soerabaja - still no air attacks; thus, my subs can be quickly repaired and reloaded before going back out again; I have my best fighters here now;

SRA:
Ambon -

Kendari -

New Guinea/Solomons:

Central Pacific:

South Pacific:
Nuka Hiva -
Upolu - empty base is easily captured

North Pacific: - Mini-DS will do a FULL SPEED run, 'if and only if' there are ships still unloading at Umnak next turn; If not, then she will cover Amphib TF with Rocky Mtn Bn, AA, 2 Cmbt Eng, BF to land at Akutan (1 NE of Dutch Harbor) in the next week; I have 2 SC TF for this theater - 2 modern CL & 6 DDs will refuel and replenish at Prince Rupert while BBs Warspite & Colorado with 4 DDs leave Astoria; Umnak will not be allowed to get AF up and running easily; just found out that both Cold Bay and Akutan bases are under "US Continental Cmmd [R]" which means... [&:]; it took me some time to figure it out, but all those restricted bomber groups in USA that have enough transfer range can head for the AF at Cold Bay for actual combat via Seattle!!; Meanwhile at Prince Rupert, I have 3BG here for training (A-20, B-25, 2x A-24) and soon a 18 plane Kingfisher group that can upgrade to SBD-3s; Yes, I want John to pay attention up here; PS - none of his bases have any AFs at 1 or greater yet

Australia:

Engineers: Colombo F3; Cawnpore F3; Hyderabad (sandh) F3; Bundaberg AF3 (B-17s & 24s can hit Koumac from here); Kunming AF4; Warangal AF2;

Intel: elements of 56th ID headed back to Christmas; 44 AA to Lunga; 18th ID at Singapore

SoPac - everything you see in screen shot will be captured in the next few months. Only Suva with 2 NZ Bde and just over 250 AV behind level 3 forts will slow him down. I was able to get more supplies here to bring it to 7200, but with multiple divisions in theater, they wont last long. I think John wants me to risk my DS in defending one of these base....NOT!!

Solomons - Not much here, except a Special BF landed last turn at Buin and he captured Lunga a few days ago. More to come in the weeks ahead, but not much from me except subs and more subs.

Borneo - The main base of Balikpapan still holds out. It was the presences of the 4th Marine Rgt that halted the first assault on the base. She used PBYs from Bataan to Jolo to Balikpapan. John doesn't seem to be in a big hurry to capture base. The PT Boats are leaving to try their luck in Java.

Java and Southern Sumatra - Why hasn't John captured Djambi for its oil?? He landed successfully at Merak and seems to be trying to isolate Batavia. I have 612 AV behind level 2 forts. He has two divisions, but I think he needs another one. My Dutch air force has recovered and I'm throwing them in again. I have 2 PT Boat TFs going to head there again after one arrives from Balikpapan. He has left Soerabaja alone and my sub fleet thanks him.
