Love the reasoning.

My point is, if you think you are playing the game, and aren't using Option 47, you are playing the game wrong. For those of you who don't care about supply, I understand that beer and pretzels are satisfying, but you'll be tossed out of competitive games and/or conventions if you ever want to participate, as you demand to re-organize isolated and disrupted units.

Ignore it....ignore it..... okay try counting to 10 and then ignore it..... stay calm....deep breaths.....

Oh to hell with that. You've been banging on about Option 47 for so long now. When you started some of us, many of us, had sympathy with your position regardless of whether we would personally use the Option or not. You may be surprised to know that a few of us still do think this is important and have actively sought movement on Option 47 very recently. But this sort of pathetic comment makes me wonder personally why I bothered.

Put Option 47 in or leave it out - either way WIF/MWIF is NOT a beer and pretzels game and the idea that this one rule - amongst the hundreds of rules that make up this wonderful game - makes that much difference is faintly ridiculous. But moreover, the idea that you are somehow a superior player because you happen to deem the Option vital is frankly risible.

No one is definitely right here and no one is definitely wrong. You, and others, have stated your case as to why you think no Option 47 = unrealistic. Equally many people have put forward equally (or probably more) detailed arguments as to why, in the context of a strategic level WWII game, no Option 47 is perfectly explainable from an historical perspective - and thus acceptable from a WIF/MWIF perspective.

Slagging experienced, long time, committed players of WIF/MWIF as being no good for anything more complex than a beer and pretzels game and childishly exclaiming that WIF/MWIF is unplayable without Option 47 just lowers any respect people have for your opinion.

I think you are being a bit hyper-active considering you are attacking me instead of the problem I’ve a had since release.

First, we all know supply simply didn’t work correctly on release. All of us who bought the product found that out quickly.

Second, into my first game I found out that there was an optional 47. My fault there. I had been playing wif for the last 25 years, and knew some rules on an unconscious level. I admit fault for not being a rules lawyer, as I hate arguing about rules. In any rate, optional 47 was added long ago to improve the realism of the game; and if we consider that there very much is a ‘WIF Basic’, if you want to call it that, by not using the optional rules in this game.

In any regard, I have outline MANY times in my optional 47 thread why I need this rule, and for the game to detail supply realistically, it needs to be available.

I cannot work around it unless I play ‘WIF Basic’. Literally no workaround.

Here are optional rules that I like that aren’t in the game.
Enroute-interception. Enjoy this rule, but can work around it with agreement of opponent.
Japanese Russian Peace. Enjoy this rule, but again can work around with agreement
Bounce combat. I like this because after rolling air-to-air combat 10,000 times, it adds some action to the monotony – not to mention allowing for more realistic results that don’t exist in the chart the way it funtions. – Nice to have
Convoys- Love to have them, but can live without.

Optional 47? Can’t play the game without it. There are no workarounds. Nothing.

Am I annoying about this, hell yea, I spent money, and haven’t gotten to play the product. You might be as well.
Consider this final thought though. The WIFDiscussion forum trashes this game for a lot of reasons; my particular critique would be in particular the lack of an asynchronous play-mode.

I bought this game because I was fed up calculating supply, which is the MOST onerus thing in the game; and that is saying something from someone who clipped the corners of every set before playing, and then discarding the counters, as I used to have to putty my counters down to the map. Yes, game-putty. This game really shines during setup, and many other phases, so much so, that going back to Vassal or god-forbid, the physical game is untenable.

Risk, and Axis and Allies are beer and pretzel games. No calculation of supply necessary. When option 47 is working, MWIF will assume it’s proper spot. Again, refer to thread on optional 47 if you need any reference to reality or games which simulate a far harsher concept than what WIF envisions optional 47 is for.

It is only to prevent isolated units from reorganizing at the end of the turn. That’s it. It is checked for 1 time a turn. That’s it, once a turn. Whew.

... and I think you have missed the point.

Firstly I have told you repeatedly that I do understand that Option 47 is important to you - and I have tried to support that stance where I can (although that has not proven helpful to your cause). I think it needs coding if only because of all the unpleasantness it is causing - not because I support your view about its effect on the game if not coded.

I am attacking your view that one rule - an optional rule I remind you - not being available is supposedly the difference between the game being the mutts nutts and a beer and pretzels game. That is just plain wrong. WIF Basic??? Please..... I am also attacking your insulting view of your fellow WIF/MWIF wargamers who may happen not to use Option 47 in WIF and do not miss it in MWIF.

Secondly - Why are you referring me to the Optional 47 thread? I refer you back to it. In the same way that you have posted to the effect that no Option 47 is unrealistic, I have posted plenty of posts in that thread that show just why WIF treatment without the Optional in play still works from both an historical and game play point of view.

So that is Option 47.

As for the de-bug tool, I am steering well clear of that whole conversation. I don't use it and never have - don't even know how to. If Steve has reasons for not providing it then, given my lack of understanding of all things computers, then I have to bow to his expertise.

Supply still exists in absence of option 47. The Italian infantry that starts in Ethiopia/Italian Somaliland will be out of supply once the Suez Canal is cut off regardless of whether or not you're playing with Option 47. It will flip when it moves. It will be unable to attack. It is out of supply just as much as a unit that's 5 hexes from a basic or secondary supply source.

Even without option 47, you'll still be calculating supply. You'll still be spending a great deal of time calculating supply, and arranging your HQs so that you can maximize the area you can keep in supply.

All option 47 does is prevent it from unflipping at the end of a turn. You have actual, real life operations in East Africa towards the beginning of the war that are modeled better in the game without Option 47 than with it. And let's face it, outside of a few isolated "colony" fronts, the odds of an OOS flipped unit surviving until the end of turn, and thus making the option matter, aren't all that good.

Granted, I play with 47 myself. But I don't think I've had 10 units in years of playing WiF that I had to stop and go "oh wait, can't unflip him, Isolated reorg." It just doesn't come up that often, and I don't think I've ever consciously made a move of any WiF piece to keep myself away from an isolated reorg situation that I would have been happy to make were I not playing with the option.

It's just not a big deal.

Actually, I enjoy beer and Doritos. I do have admit though that I like to eat the cool ranch versus the cheese flavor ones when I'm playing. Doesn't stain the keyboard and mouse as much.

Ok I admit it, I drink beer, eat chips, and used to play WIF.

Now I just dream of MWIF.

If there were any way to work around this issue, I would bitch less about it.

My last game was ruined in a short series of moves: first the Japanese stretched out and tried to capture some objectives in OOS land. Then the Russians cut the supply of an army group the Japanese didn't expect. Then before the turn ended, the Japanese were able to cut the supply of the Russians in the southern salient. All in one Sept/Oct 40 turn. Both disorganized OOS isolated armies should have stayed disorganized. But they didn't, which really began my thinking of how OPEN the Chinese and Russian front really is. There has been much speculation and criticism of the unified map scale. My second test with another human resulted in some odd moves that I could not reconcile. OOS surrounded units should not re-organize.

Several strategies for taking Pearl Harbor and Gibraltar hinge on maintaining the Rock or Pearl out of supply until you are successful ground-striking the land units there.

Even more so, as either Russians or Germans, I have isolated 10-20 corps in a single turn. Just a big surround trap. It's easier to pull on the Germans in Barb of course. The real war hinged on supply and forcing enemy troops to surrender.

Smarter strategists than I agree on one principle: Supply is more important than nearly any other factor in battle. Strategic surprise might be one of the few things that trump it.

Another year older, and still waiting to play.

Regarding MWIF, here is a little mention of what Steve was dealing with in 2006...

"My main problem is that I am working with an enormous program (100,000 lines of Pascal) written by someone else - who seemed to only add documentation to the code when the planets were in certain, extremely rare, configurations. In other words, almost never. To this legacy code I am making a staggering number of changes, most of which are fundamental to its underlying structure (also undocumented).

So, the bugs the beta testers find are 90% due to my inability to understand the nuances of the legacy code. This is not a standard programming project. "

1 - I have fixed those two bugs for the next release.

You realize that only helps if the patch is pushed to the rest of us. On the other hand, the debug tool works all the time. It's been over 3 weeks since you posted that you fixed the bugs, and yet no patch.

It's been over three weeks since your game file was fixed for you and posted in the original thread and the fixing was allowed by the beta version Steve spoke of, and would have been impossible to do with the beta tools alone.

Last info from Steve was his development PC had died and he was having some troubles rebuilding the Delphi development environment on a new PC.

I have no information as to why the next version has not been released yet at least as a public beta, but I suspect Steve's ambition was to have a greater number of fixes made first.

Have there been any MWiF releases to the private beta testers lately? Specifically, since Steve mentioned his PC died approximately 2 weeks ago?

Hi rkr, I am sure he's okay but we testers are as in the dark as you are, I just posted a comment on the beta testers forums that might not be received well by Steve, but as a beta tester for 3 or more years with a lot of effort put into this game I feel betrayed by Steve, Erik and Matrix.

It may not be fair to say that about Erik because all of his information came from Steve, but he is the liaison between Steve and Matrix and I feel with reluctance that he was asleep at the wheel through the last 9 years when it came to Steve's reports of where the game stood at any given time.

I have many more deep feelings about went on here but I see no point in talking about them as it will accomplish nothing but add more animosity to the bad feelings that have been posted on the MWIF forums.

Bo, it's nice to near from you again. I guess you've been laying low in the public forum for the past month or so?

I really do hope all the animosity between (some) folks and Matrix gets sorted out to the satisfication of most, if not all. Because with all it's "faults" I feel that MWiF is by far the best WW2 game on the market, bar none! My hope is that this community will push through all of this to make MWiF even better and, importantly, acceptable to those WiF experts who are having problems with MWiF not meshing fully with their expectations from the board game.

That is my hope because I wish to keep enjoying MWiF for two or even three more decades! Not how's that for optimism? That is, I expect to make it three more decades. Possible but ... [;)]

Bo, I'm afraid there's nothing more I can do or say to change your mind, but I would ask that you please stop spreading rumors.

I've been away on vacation, so apologies for the silence from my side and any concern it caused. Steve has been dealing with major issues related to his main development system dying and the transition to a new system has been far from easy. I see he has now posted a monthly update. Until he gets this new development system fully functioning with MWIF, unfortunately development is on hold.

Needless to say, we could not foresee that Steve's development system was about to die when we posted the previous timelines. I am back now and will be checking in with Steve tomorrow. As soon as the new system is fully functional, we will have some updates and updated timelines for you all.

Erik where do you come off saying that, this was in no way directed at you, please reread my comment and tell me what part is not true over the last 9 years. I have stayed off the of the forums, this is the first comment I have made in quite awhile negative or positive, I was answering rkr of how things are to the best of my knowledge, if you took that personal that is on you.

It was not to be mean in any way I have stayed away from that in case you have not noticed, maybe you should read a few of the posts on the beta forums in the last few days by more moderate beta testers than me.

The reason for the so called rumors is because we have heard nothing in weeks, the forums are dead and nobody has any confidence in us anymore, and that frustrates me.

Hi bo,

That was a reponse to the following comment: "but he is the liaison between Steve and Matrix and I feel with reluctance that he was asleep at the wheel through the last 9 years when it came to Steve's reports of where the game stood at any given time." When you post something like that, the public will assume that you have evidence to back it up. In this case, you do not. First, I was not the producer for WIF for most of those nine years. I stepped in fairly late after the previous producer (David Heath) left the company and have done everything I could to be active, aware, informed and get things straightened out both before and after release. I have certainly made my share of mistakes and I have posted publicly about those here as well, but I found this particular comment unfair and uninformed.

However, it was my mistake making my frustrations with this public. We had discussed previous differences in private and I should have kept it there despite your public statement that you feel I betrayed you. What actually happened here was an unfortunate coincidence of my vacation coinciding with an unexpected interruption in Steve's communication due to his system issues. I'm sorry I made things worse by responding publicly and negatively to your post.

I recognize that your own frustration comes from a passion for MWIF, but despite your feelings to the contrary we are in fact allies and I am doing my best to get things where we all want them to go.

Regards,

- Erik
