All right, I believe the Axis will surrender. My stupid, spineless Axis opponent is giving up.

M/A 40 : The Allies got the initiative. Weather : fine everywhere.

1- Russia demanded, got the Finnish borderlands, and started moving troops back towards the German border
2- Germany has no troops to spare, gets 3 resources from the USSR so the CW outproduces Germany, France outproduces Italy, the USA outproduce Japan, and the Euro Axis navies got reduced to insignificant paper fleets
3- German has used its 2 O-Chits, the Allies are firmly entrenched in Belgium, and Germany's last attack against the wooded hex failed with a 3 roll : Germany lost an ARM div and an ART. One HQ is already flipped from HQ support. All the German planes are flipped, as well as their 3 best land units.
4- Germany and Italy incompletely covered Yugoslavia, so that the Zagreb MIL can take Vienna and the 3 oil points saved there. If the Axis uses some units to attack it, their lines will crack elsewhere.
5- Japan is bogged in China with rough parity, and the risk of a bad die roll would leave them vulnerable to being put out of supply.

Not much point in going on. Or rather, not much point in reading such a dismal display of failsmanship.

I may post a few further updates if I keep playing and if the Axis get more significant victories than eliminating the Yugoslavain CAV.
At least, I realize that I still have to learn how to play that game.

Otherwise, I'll switch sides with myself and start a new AAR : "Solo revenge with no clever name"

Best regards

You've learned the hard way that the German army is good, but not invincible in 1940...

Ha ha! Most people learn from their mistakes. I prefer to learn from other peoples' mistakes. (Bismark, I think)

Now, I think in my Solo game, the Axis consistently got the worse of the dice rolls. There were at least 4 German attacks in Belgium with bad rolls, maybe 3, 3 and 4, and no really good ones. There were 2 good rolls in China, and mediocre or bad ones as well. Naval serch rolls were skewed in the Allies' favor, and the superiority of a fleet with naval air power over one without was amply proven.

In real life, if the French and British had displayed the same will to fight in 1939 as the Germans, the Germany army would not have seemed invicible either. I suppose the Wehrmacht used the 2d10 table in 1940 with one loaded dice that always rolled a 10.

I'd advise you check out Warspite's AAR on fall gelb. The opening moves on the low countries are pretty well discussed.

I enjoyed following this clever thread. [:)]

Thank you. [&o][:)]

Yes, I think it's fair to say that in 1940 the Germans had whatever luck was going, on their side. That said, fortune favours the brave, and the Germans were rewarded for trying something bold, while the Allies were punished for thinking and fighting the war 1914 stylee.

How did Yugoslavia become involved in the war?
There was a pro-Axis government. Then there was a coup by a pro-Allied faction.

However, the pro-Allied faction then dithered, giving the Germans a chance to plan an attack (Fuhrer Directive 25). Yugoslav resistance was not strong, despite having a large army, and the country was rapidly overrun, with very light German casualties. Then the partisans got going....

It is fascinating to read the sections in Churchill's multi-volume history covering the early months of '41...

In Real Life : Yugoslavia was hesitating to become commited, I think neither the pro Axis nor the pro Allied side wanted to actually join the war until the way the wind was blowing became more obvious.
Germany needed to get troops to Greece double quick in the spring of 1941 : Italy had attacked Greece with troops starting from Albania and had been given a humiliating bloody nose. THe British had landed troops in Greece, and Germany did not want to let them stay there.

In my game : the CW landed a division in Zara. It had 2 corps of dubious value for the BEF (a militia and a garrison) ready to ship at the beginning of the turn.

Impulse 1 : Germany aligns Hungary (as allowed after backing Hungarian and Bulgarian claims on Rumanian territory)
Impulse 2 : the CW ships the two corps into the Italian coast
Impulse 3 : Germany aligns Bulgaria
Impulse 4 : the 2 corps land in Zara. The rules state that if France or the CW have 3 units in adjacent countries, they may align Yugoslavia
Impulse 5 : Germany declares war on Yugoslavia in order to be allowed to align Rumania too

Actually, it takes four corps in adjacent countries, not three units, for the CW or France to align Yugoslavia.

(Germany should not let the French walk into Germany at the start of the game. Then they can align Yugoslavia., as Germany (Austria) is adjacent to Yugolavia. If one goes through the AARs, you can find at least one where the German player made this mistake.)
