Turn 14

I play the Manoeuvre card - which takes effect next turn in the hope that I can increase AP's.

Artillery is with 16th Army. That is fine as they need to take Ostrov as soon as possible. I will then switch to 18th Army if/when Tallinn and Narva become targets.

Okay, let's go back to the Daily Log for AGN and take from the top (where not already dealt with):

- Finnish Government are still being lily-livered about attacking 1939 Soviet Union territory. Nothing to do about that.
- The good relationship means that one subordinate HQ obtains command bonuses. These are going to Hoepner's 4th Panzergruppe which is getting +20 AP's.

- The 4th Panzergruppe and Karelian Armies have one unit out of Command Range. What's this all about?

Well firstly, I have not been paying attention and have the Oinonen Division with the wrong army [8|]. But also there is a fantastic tool for easily checking who is within range.

I can clearly see that Oinonen Division (out of picture) is outside Command Range. Moreover, I can see the degrees in which combat bonuses are affected (the further away from the HQ, the less bonuses received). As usual, Green = good and Red = not so good, although still within range.

I start to move Oinonen back towards its parent HQ. The 6th Panzer Division, leading the charge to Tallinn, is outside range. However I will look at rectifying this one as and when I come to move my AGN units

Daily Log (Cont)

- Tactical Air Support is being provided to Hoepner's panzers.
- 10 divisions are receiving Direct Fire Artillery Support

These are the 10 divisions of Busch's 16th Army. In the bottom panel there is a yellow artillery symbol that confirms it is this army receiving this bonus.

- FSB is at Dunaburg. Not sure where this should go next, but until I take Narva or some other city further north, then this is not something to worry about - but Luga seems favourite.
- I have barge convoys running and also additional trains allocated to artillery ammunition.
- Truck maintenance is 8% which seems okay.
- Logistical Pipeline Info. Right I cannot ignore this anymore. What the hell is all this about?

Right, the pipeline is currently Green so all is good. AGN also has 16,000 barrels of oil so there is plenty in reserve.

A Quota is sufficient fuel for normal operations assuming a 100 AP strength for four days = 1 turn.

A look at the Panzergruppen Summary meanwhile shows that the 4th Panzergruppe has more than 6 Quotas on hand. So that is a nice healthy reserve (but also probably reflects that I am not doing very well!).

Rail

So what causes a line to go yellow, red or grey? How many trains and trucks do I need? What determines whether they breakdown? The Rail capacity chart shows AGN has an ideal train capacity of 36 trains per day, but the actual is 21. So shouldn't my fuel stocks be going down? No, it appears that it must be the number in brackets that is required. If so, that is a huge margin of safety. Why would AGC and AGS positions not be better given they have waaaay more trains than required? Presumably this is where problems with trucks come into it?

Well that tells its own story doesn't it? I will need to pay special attention to AGS. This series of screens helps me understand the effect that the decisions have on the overall situation.

13th August 1941
Turn 14
Army Group North/Army Group Centre (northern boundary)

I will do the decisions and play cards as I go along. Having had a recent experience of running out of pp - I really don't want to do that again...

The turn kicks off with von Bock ordering his two infantry army commanders to attack as and where possible. The first attack takes place on the left shore of Lake Ilmen and sees the destruction of one Soviet division and the reduction of a second in an attack carried out by the 61st and 254th Infantry Divisions of 18th Army. On their left flank General von Chappuis' XXXVIII Corps push back a Soviet division - and that brings an end to the attacks in the north.

West of Ostrov an attack against two rifle divisions fails to dislodge them, but to the south, 93rd Division gets across the river and establishes a tenuous bridgehead.

The mud has caught Hoepner out. His panzergruppe HQ is all on its own next to two Soviet rifle divisions... His panzers meanwhile continue north, by-passing Ostrov on their way to Pskov.

16th Army destroy three surrounded Soviet divisions, freeing up the rest of the army to head north. Ostrov is surrounded, although no attack is possible this turn.

Sadly the favour did not have the desired effect. The mud meaning that the 9th Army were not able to advance very far anyway and 3rd Panzergruppe are in ever increasing trouble; three divisions are now in the 30%-40% bracket.

Turn 14
Decisions

Post 347 shows the pitiful state of AGS trucks. I would like to see the effect of the decisions in practice. I spend 11pp to undertake a truck refit in 4 days (next turn). I must remember to check this report then.

In the meantime I move the FSB to Kiev and otherwise try and keep everyone happy.

This fails miserably with von Brauchitsch and, particularly, with Wagner.

Turn 14
Army Group Centre (Southern boundary)

I bring the 15th Division out of the line for rest and refit. I will need to do this increasingly - there is no way I can take an entire army in the centre out of line.

Progress is, understandably given the mud, very slow.

I prepare to take 1st Panzergruppe out of line as the FSB is being moved. Otherwise there is little to report other than 6th and 17th Armies have made some small progress in clearing the marshes.

The game is getting more and more difficult to keep the spirits up. Attacks are just not succeeding - even against weakened opposition - no doubt because the Germans are just as weak, if not weaker, in both mind and body.

I have just read all of this, thank you for the time taken. Looks like a bargain in the sale and looks like a great game for solo play while I wait for turns in my AE games.

Any reasons why I should not take the plunge?

I am guilty of buying lots of games that seldom get played but this one has a feel of being a different beast entirely.

Reasons for buying:

- Fun!
- But definitely not beer and pretzels
- Excellent tutorials to get one into the game quickly with minimum effort
- Decent graphics
- A decent historically accurate OOB - no it's not WITE standard, but then if one is playing WITP-AE one probably doesn't need another time-consuming monster!
- I did not like the sound of cards. Dumb idea. I couldn't have been more wrong.
- Trying to keep everyone happy - especially that laugh a minute von Leeb - is an interesting concept and really works.

Reasons for not buying:

- If the Eastern Front bores the pants off you
- Otherwise none really [;)]

This is my happy face...
