Mystery Casualties

Post by Harrybanana »

In my server game with Liquid Sky this last turn has been pretty quiet in terms of the ground war. On his turn LS pulled back some more and I advanced. He did bot bomb me that I can see. There were no ground combats and very little contact even between our units. Accordingly casualties should be minimal. But when I checked the casualties part way through my turn I was surprised to discover that somehow I had incurred over 18,000 casualties (see below screenshot). I did sea transport some units, but did not lose a single transport ship. I also had some units arrive back in Britain this turn that I had sent on their way last turn. Did I lose 18,000 men in some sort of Bermuda Triangle??

Helpless can you look at this for me and see if you can figure out what it is that happened. Whatever it is I don't want to do it again. I have finished my turn but would prefer not returning it to LS until you have looked at this.

God I am being a pain lately. MY friends and family say I'm a whiner, i can't imagine why:)

I looked at your save. It is impossible to say for sure what these 18k casualties came from, but after progressing a turn I found that Allied got another 8 allied losses after logistics, most of which were trucks. Out of 8K lost men only 100men were killed and the rest were disablement.

All of this let me think that these losses are caused by logistic attrition. Number of lost freights in the depot can generate such disablement.

Don't need to crash a car. Driving muddy roads in Italy can make it broken.

You may have messed up our server game. I got an email at 2:28pm Saturday saying that my turn is ready....but when I go on the game, it says that it is HarryBanana's turn and that he last updated at midnite.

I thought I might pop off a turn since I just got home from work and not much is going on to do...but I guess I can go to bed instead [>:]

Well I did lose almost 17,000 vehicles last turn (see below). Which itself seems a bit odd as in the previous 18 turns I lost an average of only 5000 vehicles per turn. Admittedly it is Italy and it is light mud, but still the majority of my units were within 5 hexes of their supply source at the beginning of my turn. I certainly don't remember anything like this happening in any of my previous games where I had 18,000 casualties just from driving trucks. And in many of those cases I had far more units much further from their supply and in worse weather. Surely this must be a bug. Is it really possible that of the 112,000 casualties I have taken from the beginning of the game (remember the Allies start with 25,000 casualties) 15% of them were caused on 1 turn from driving trucks.

Also if they are only disabled does this mean that if/when they come back I get the VPs back?

Its Okay LS, I was able to finish my turn and you're up. But if I lose 18+ VPs because of this bug that will be rather annoying.

There are lots of units outside 5 hex range. Besides damaged freight which could happen in the past can cause damaged replacement.
Surely this must be a bug.

Don't think so.

I stand corrected. I checked the December 30, 1944 turn from my game against the AI and sure enough I had lost almost 30,000 vehicles from the turn before. Still, if I lost 17,000 vehicles in Italy supplying far fewer units much closer to their supply I would have expected to lose far more than 30,000 vehicles in the situation I was in as shown below (and yes I know that Italy has worse roads). But I guess it is what it is. It would appear that the Allies can expect to incur almost as many (and perhaps more) casualties moving supplies/freight than through actual combat. Another reason why it would be wise to not advance into Germany.

Unless I am missing something about the way casualties and VPs work, which is possible.

It depends on what you mean by lots. And I'm not sure if you were looking at the save from before or after my movement. I believe most were within 5 hexes before movement.

I meant enough to cause such losses. Again I haven't seen 18K myself, just 6k. With amount of lost freights 18k doesn't look unbelievable.

As for VP, I think they are counted on the fly, i.e. it should be adjusted if equipment goes out of disablement pool.

My apologies again. When I opened my next turn I found that I had another 8000 casualties and 6500 vehicle losses (odd since my units are now further away from their supply sources) but only lost 1 total VP to US Casualties and 0 to Other. I'm not sure how if I took 18,000 casualties last turn I only lost 1 VP for it; but I guess I can't complain. Talk about much ado about nothing.

That is one of the reasons I build lots of depots on airfileds in England. You don't loose Trucks. It pays in the long run.
