Not being a Japanese player I have to ask. How much does it cost in your economy to accelerate production like you do? (And you got a pretty darn good grip on that) Is there a cost to be paid late war for boosting dates and numbers such? I have no idea how it works.

I'm still relatively new playing Japan, but I've helped manage John's economy way back in his classic battle against CR by learning to use Tracker. One thing I've learned and read in AARs is the use or and stockpiling of supply. There has been many players who have sound strategy as Japan, but end up losing in the end because of lack of supply. Many of the air frames can upgrade to the next model once it becomes available. The A6 Zero line is a classic example and is one of those planes that you love because of it. There is the Tony which has limited usefulness (short range) and an engine that is exclusively for that plane. So besides the 1000 supply points per air frame factory being repaired, there is the same cost to repair engine factories as they can become expensive. An art that I'm still learning is how many planes to produce of a particular model? Some games are a blood bath from the beginning in the air while others are not. As Allies, I often engage in ground bombardment attacks just to use up Japanese supplies which the Allies have in overwhelming amount.

Dan finally separates out his CTF and launches a small raid. He moves into the area south of Jolo and catches a small TF sinking 7 ships. There are six small TKs at Tarakan. Order them to move to Balikpapan and place 150 Fighters on LRCAP to cover them. Whether they get away or not is irrelevant. If we can hit his strike in the air he will lose a good number of aircraft. This is a good thing.

The Japanese sub arm has had an exceedingly effective war. Times in the last few months have been tough with many subs being sunk for little-to-no result.

A new sub, I-200 (KD8 Class) raises its periscope on this stormy morning and finds a brand new Essex-Cass American carrier filling its scope at a range of 2500 Yards. Banzai! All six tubes fire their torps and, as the subs crash dives, it can be heard not one but TWO TTs striking home. BANZAI!

The American DDs swing into action and get numerous near misses and damage the sub but not severely. Having achieved a significant attack, the sub limps for Soerabaja for repairs.

BANZAI!!!

At this stage, it may be more important just to get multiple large warships removed from the battle field than sink one.

I saw a group of TFs moving up from Boela and had seven SS in Babeldoap. Ordered them to the coast off Mindanao. Two got damaged without attacks but I-200 got her shots in. NICE! No SS sunk so this is a good intercept. Order the remaining five to move north and south and try to catch the damaged CV.

John, can you advise how you use your subs ? It seems you have many hits with them, I mean 2 torp hits in 44 vs. the mighty Allied CV fleets: Do you use a patrol zones in 1 hex, or remain on station. And what about the orders - do you put them on "max agressive" or leave it at normal ? [:)]

The first thing I do on Dec 8, 1941 is change EVERY SS commander to someone AGGRESSIVE. Takes a lot of PP but it is needed. As subs enter service I do the same thing with strong comanders.

Once the war begins I like to cluster my SS into hunting packs of 5-7 SS with at least one Glen I-Boat included. Usually I set patrol paths so they are not easy to catch by staying stationary. Areas of operation get rotated so the enemy doesn't have the chance to concentrate ASW assets in one spot where there are ALWAYS SS. Finally, I put myself into my opponent's shoes and I ask where are his convoys traveling? Where is he going?

Hope that helps some.

Did you change the Glen carrying boats to aggressive commanders as well? I would think a cautious commander would suit them better to keep them around longer.

As an Allied sub commander I am starting to experiment with a few high skilled but cautious commanders. I have used all aggressive commanders in the past but wonder if that is the reason the subs target escorts so many times over the more valuable merchants. But with the virtual uselessness of Allied subs vs the merchants of a skilled player, I find myself opting to use my subs in conjunction with offensive operations in an effort to kill big Japanese warships. So perhaps I will just stick with high aggression.

You are correct. I still use aggressive commanders in my Glen I-Boats but instead of high-60s+, I look for better commanders somewhere in the mid-50s. If they see something--NICE--then attack but please keep the Emperor's boat afloat...

Yesterday it was the commander of the I-200 that scored big on CV Sumatra.

TODAY it is I-199! The I-199 spots an American CVE TF NE of Davao and plants not one but TWO Torps into CVE Chenango. Add a fuel storage explosion and he gets to see the ship sink before his eyes. BANZAI! The crew endures one DC attack with little-to-no damage, then a second taking some damage, but it is the third DC attack that forces the boat (out of oxygen and battery power) to the surface where it then sinks...

Got the CVE (carrying 48 F4F) though!

Burma

I haven't written much about Burma because the Theatre is fairly irrelevant presently due to the Allied moves in the Philippines.

After a long period of stability, the Allies brought the kitchen sink into the northern and central part of Burma about 3-4 months ago. An orderly retreat was totally disrupted due to an armor attack that followed a retreat cutting off my rail going south. Lost two Infantry Divisions (both bought out and now rebuilding in Tokyo) with a third still being cut off.

A line was established at Bassein--Prome--Toungoo. It held for nearly 8 weeks while under continuous bomber attack (2EB but mostly 4EB). Somehow an Allied Inf Reg got in behind the lines south of Prome. Seeing the danger to the Japanese line, Dan began a 'right hook' coming around the Japanese line. Despite many attacks on the lone unit in that hex, it held while more Allied units arrived. The growing threat unhinged the line and the Japanese have begun another retreat southwards.

The new line is highlighted on the screenshot. With the consolidation of the line, several units can be pulled out for rebuilding. It is needed! Tomorrow will see Bassein units begin retreating into Rangoon. All Base Forces get their marching orders to head for Moulmein to deploy south and rebuild.

No reinforcements shall arrive here. These unit are it. They will have to make do and hold in the jungle. Luckily supplies are plentiful as the Allied aircraft have not shutdown Rangoon's Port or attacked ANY Japanese shipping.

Nearly forgot the truly momentous event of the day. Over the skies of Miri appear a large formation (60 Planes) of new 4EB. Flying at 15,000 Ft the dreaded B-29 Superfortress makes its combat debut. The bombs strike at the oil fields destroying 37 derricks.

My fear was Dan would announce these planes by doing a Port Strike first and then go after economic targets. Thankfully he does not so we're able to pull everything but ships undergoing repairs or refit.

There is a Sentai of Franks and Georges at each of the major Oil Centers (Tarakan, Balikpapan, Miri, and Brunei). They had been resting/training. Now they take to the skies. The next B-29 strike shall be met with serious resistance. We'll see how tough these new planes are...

Where do you think the origin of their flight was, John? If I could find it, talk about bombardment bait! [X(]

Back in the day, once upon a time, this was explained as a submarine being incapable of penetrating the screen (insufficient naval skill and / or aggression) and instead taking pot shots outside the screen at a nearby escort instead. In other words, the LOWER skills will tend towards this behavior more than HIGHER skills. Don't recall if it was 'naval' skill or 'aggression'.
