Another way to kill Tildas (and this also works on the East Front vs T-34s and KVs) is - scout cars! Yes, scout cars. Supress enemy tank with panzers, flank with a scout car, and open up with the 20mm gun! I get a lot of track kills doing that, and a tank that can't move can be driven away from :)

Or easily polished with Infantry!

I have actually had better luck stunning them with M13/40's, at least until they retreat back to Rome.

Since you've been through it once already, do you EVER get to upgrade those crappy 37mm guns?

WB, I played the 'steal the matildas' battle. I was on pins and needles right up until the end! An awesome battle, well worth playing for anyone who hasn't yet. Hint: make sure to protect the stolen matildas until you get them off the map! (I managed an MV as I recall.):)

. . .if the British had put 6 lb guns on them I would be in big trouble.

Unfortunately for the British tankers, British doctrine on the use of tanks when the matilda II was designed had changed little from WW I, and tanks were designed as rolling pillboxes to support the infantry, rather than to take on other tanks head to head. At least that is what the sources I've read have said on the matter.
