Most PT boats also had a 40mm on the stern. That was standard factory equipment.

Bill

But only later, I believe.

Here's a drawing of an early Elco:
http://www.ptboats.org/20-05-05-drawings-002.html

I don't think that is a 40 mm - it's a 20 mm Oerlikon.

This is - mid-1943 production: http://www.ptboats.org/20-05-05-drawings-003.html

It also has radar.

One can, of course, discuss if this is "early" or "late"......[:)]

You're right about the PT-103 class, but the PT-200 class that went into commission in January 1943 had the 40mm.

There were so many field modifications I think a lot of the PT-103s got upgrades.

Sure. PT-200 was a Higgins boat, I believe most of the boats in the Pacific were Elcos. I was surprised that the Elcos did not
have torpedo tubes. Probably because my mind refers to those PT boats in The Philippines.

In this pic, that larger gun on the aft deck is a 40mm, the one on the bow is indeed a 20mm Oerlikon.
The device at the rear port side is a smoke generator..The rest of the weapons shown are the M2 .50cal HMG...

individual ships are considered being feminine - some say it is because their maintenance is so expensive.

Aye, and they have stays and braces and are always on a different tack. One hopes to be on one that does not have barnacles on the bottom. [;)]

In this pic the forward gun is a 37mm from a P-39. (Note the top view with the 37mm oversized & offset magazine). There is a 20mm Oerlikon on the port side forward of the torpedo.

Here's a photo of the M4 37mm cannon used in the P-39 and apparently on some PT boats.
