Fast forwarding through turn after turn of endless bombing raids isn't amazing fun.

And that's exactly what Allied players have to endure in '42.

Why is that Japanese players constanly lament having to endure getting their butts kicked whan its is exactly what they expect of their opponent?

As an Allied player in 1942, I need only bide my time until better days arrive. The Japanese player late in the game has no such hope. The two aren't remotely comparable.

I don't see Japanese players whining constantly, as you imply Hans. Mostly they seem to endure things with a stoic sense of humor.

I guess we just view things from a different perspective.

Please indulge me as I use an analogy to illustrate my perspective.

It's kind of like the difference between paying up front for something you have to wait two years to receive and buying on a two year deferred payment plan.

The Allied side has to pay in advance for what it has to wait two plus years to receive and the Japanese side receives it up front while deferring the payments for two plus years.

Yea, I get that it hurts to have to start making paymants on the shiny new item that is no longer shiny and new two+ years later when the date srrives when you have to start making the payments.

My consistent reponse to the laments of "this isn't fun anymore" is "suck it up, it isn't supposed to be fun anymore when the bill comes due. You already had your fun".

Many surrender before they get to the bloody end that the Japanese endured. However, I have had allied players quit after losing a major early war carrier battle because they didn't want to wait until 1944 to start the counter offensive, 2 years of prepping wasn't their idea of fun. So it takes someone who enjoys the challenges that come with a devastating loss and try a different approach. In fact it may be easier on a Japanese player because he knows the end is nigh and so the longer he can put it off he feels a sense of success.

We don't do it because it's fun, we do it because we're masochists. Let me have B-29s as Japan in 1941 and I'll show you how to really not have fun.

That said, it is very fun holding back the Allied tide.

And masochism is why Allied players agree to an anything goes, non-historical December 7th start.

Glad to know there are a few out there who soldier through the maschocistic end game and don't quit as soon as the fun ends.

My personal experience in PBEM was with one who quit as soon as his autovictory gambit failed.

I've played both sides in PBEM. Playing 1941 and 1942 for the Allies doesn't remotely approach the punishment Japan gets in 1945.

Here's one caveat - the Nell and Betty bombers are hard for the Allies to deal with, but Allied fighters can catch them. There are few Japanese fighters that can even catch the B-29 when it arrives, let alone shoot it down.

What I expect is a good fight because I don't send a boy's forces to do a man's job. When things turn sideways anyway, then there's cause for lament.

As for just getting beat up on by the Allied OOB, we're not idiots. We remain silent about that except when it's pertinent to some meta discussion or other.

I don't think this analogy works very well. To play Japan properly, you have to plan for 1943 and 1944 from the get-go; that is far more like "paying in advance" than deferring payments.

We Allied players have hope.

Well, yeah, but also a relentless calendar.

Well, let me put it this way. The Allies are going to win the war, assuming it's a match between equals. For most players, that's all they care about; all they look at; all they consider.

Whether the Allies are going to win the game is another matter entirely. For those few who pay attention to the game and victory points, victory is probably a toss-up and the calendar is relentless for both sides (the Japanese early, the Allies late).

I'm not at all sure that those who care about VPs and the game design are in the minority.

And Japan, while it has to care about the calendar, can with by simply not losing. The Allies have to have an auto-victory to win, and that has a date system imposed.

And I think the "earning a draw" point is about 6 months too far in the Allies' favor, having played 3 PBEM games into 1945 now (well, 3 when this one gets there, but close enough).
