The 4th of July 1989

Post by fatgreta1066 »

I'm still reading Northern Fury in preparation for playing those scenarios, so I decided to see what it's like to unleash nuclear devastation on central Germany. In this alternate reality a 37 year old Vladimir Putin has taken control of the USSR and decided to fight it out with NATO. His secret weapon? Tactical Nuclear Weapons! Our secret defense plan? Tactical Nuclear Weapons! How could this not be fun?

[center]
***FLASH MESSAGE***

To: NATO Commander, Europe

From: NATO HQ, Brussels

1. Imediate implementation of OPERATION KICKBACK is now Authorized.

REF AXX 22313 42ZED 945223 DD

2. HUMIT indicates Soviet 9th Tank Division moving West towards W. German Border. Battle Strength approx 300 TU-80 MBT; 250 BMP-3 IFV; Supporting Artillery and SAM units. The enemy Division is divided into approximately 6 Battalions of TU-80, and 2 Battalions of BMP-3. These units must be stopped before they reach Ramstein. If we can stop the 9th Division in a decisive victory, we believe we can dissuade the Soviet Union from further land attacks. Our land armor is severely limited, only 6 Company-strength Abrams and Challenger tank units are positioned to stop the Soviet advance. Several Cavalry Scout units are also in position along the border.

2. Use SR-71 Recon Asset @ Mildenhall to locate enemy Division elements along Border. Supporting Recon assets in addition to SR-71 are given in your ORBAT.

3. Recommend use mobile Lance 100 kt (4 available) to destroy/disperse major enemy armor elements. Follow-up nuclear strikes with 200kt SRAM weapons (12 total). These SRAMs will be available soon at Ramstein and RAF Fairford. Target the center of armor formations using either hard targets or BOL capability where applicable. 3 Pershing 1A 400kt are available in Eastern France for use on permitted airbases and/or for attacking armor formations. Conduct further follow up strikes with conventional air assets and our limited armor/artillery units.

4. SRAM and Pershing 1A are authorized for use on enemy airbases at Brand-Briesen, Kluczewo, and Brno. Use your available nuclear assets wisely, as they are limited. Remember that the main and most immediate threat is the Soviet Armor.

5. Nuclear/Conventional Strikes on airbases near Berlin, Moscow, or Murmansk are FORBIDDEN. These targets are near major population areas and damage to any major city in the Warsaw Pact will likely prompt a major nuclear confrontation. Even slight damage to any major enemy population center will have global consequenses.

6. Nuclear/Conventional Strikes on any Strategic Missile Asset of the Soviet Union are also FORBIDDEN due to the potential for nuclear escalation. These Assets include SS-24/25 Mobile Units located in Western Russia/Ukraine; and SS-18 silos located near the City of Gorky.

8. Two Battalions of tactical nuclear Scud 1-B missiles have been reportedly moved to Central/Southern portions of East Germany. These Scud units may be attacked with either nuclear or conventional weapons once they are located. We anticipate the Scud weapons will be used on our radar installations in range.

9. NATO Strategic Nuclear Forces located on the Resolution and ICBM silos in CONUS are under a seperate Command Authority.

8. Estimated Disposition of other enemy forces is as follows:

o SA-12 Gladiator and SA-11 Gadfly SAM Systems protect all airbases and Radar Sites. SH-11 Gorgon nuclear ABM sites exist around Moscow and Gorky.

o Numerous SA-5c installations are present as shown on your Tactical Map 42-885/C

o Locations of Big Back, Hen House, Cat House, and Dog House radar systems are shown on your Tactical Map 42-885/C.

o Berlin Airbase - 1 Squadron Su-27S, 1 Squadron Mig 29S, Backfire MR Recon Assets

o Kluczewo Airbase - Mainstay AEW Support, 6 Su-24M, 6 Su-27S, 1 Squadron Tu-22 Blinder SEAD; Su-24MP Jammer Support

o Brno Airbase - 6-10 Flogger K Attack Aircraft, Fencer E Elint Support, 6-10 Fencer D Attack Aircraft, 8-10 Mig-29S

o Kubinka Airbase - 2 Squadron Mig-29-S, 1 Squadron Tu-160 Blackjack, 1 Squadron Mig-31, 1 Squadron Tu-22M-3 Backfire C, Refueling Tanker Support

o Murmansk Airbase - 1 Squadron Tu-22M-3 Backfire C

Here is my initial deployment:

To be straight with you, I started and lost and restarted and lost this one a few times before coming up with this plan, that I think is going to be a winner. I hope to eliminate or at least very seriously degrade Soviet fighter cover in the early hours of this fight. To do that I'm ordering my Pershing SSM unit to move at best possible speed to get in range of Brand Beirsen Airbase, then Brno. Why didn't the US overall commander station those missiles in a useful place to begin with?!? That will take about an hour for Brand-Beirsen and another hour for Brno. So they will launch their planes, but hopefully I'll catch enough on the ground on top of taking away their base for re-arming to make a difference. My CAP will have to fight like hell initially, and some of those fighters have to fly a long way, but I'm hopeful that a war of attrition in the air will be to my advantage if I can destroy three of the four enemy airbases. To destroy the Klukzelo base will be trickier. I've got just over 200 cruise missiles on B-52s. I know from experience that just shooting them across the battlefield doesn't work, fighters and SAMs pick them off. So I'm sending my Buffs on a two pronged flanking mission. The southern contingent will be accompanied by jammers and SEAD aircraft. My goal is to launch all of those missiles at Kluczewo and essentially eliminate that base as a threat. Once that is accomplished, the enemy will only have Berlin airbase to operate from. Sadly, that is off limits to me for political reasons.

That is all well and good, but as the briefing states Russian armor is the biggest threat. How will I deal with them? The reason I want to degrade the Russian fighter force is so that I can send out my A-10's, my Apaches, my F-111s my B-1B's and my iron bomb armed B-52s to search and destroy enemy land units. Until I can do that, my ground forces will have to hold on. I have 4 Lance nuclear SSMs and a total of 12 nuclear ASMs on three F-111 FBs to stuanch the initial tide. I know that the Soviets will be throwing nuclear SCUDs my way, aimed at taking out my radars. I can't realistically stop that, as far as I can see. And I know from experience that the damned Paintbox jamming vehicles are very effective. Sadly HARM missiles don't seem to target those things, so I have to eliminate them as fast as possible, even though they're very hard to find.

Time to launch the cruise missiles before enemy fighters get my B-52s. I'd rather have gotten closer but it is what it is.

I didn't get a screenshot of it but my first Pershing has already eliminated Brand-Breisen. Now my second Pershing strike is about to hit Brno at about the same time as my cruise missiles strike Kluczewo.

Out of my 200+ cruise missiles it appears that maybe 25 got through. I've always doubted that SAM defenses in real life would be as effective as they are in this game, but it is what it is. We still have another Pershing in our arsenal!

While all this was happening behind enemy lines, a brutal armored assault was occurring in Germany. I was task saturated for a while and didn't get screenshots, but most of my ground units were eliminated. I made powerful nuclear strikes with both my Lance SSMs and my plane launched SRAMs, and I was ahead on points. Suddenly I noticed that my score was dipping to the -100 range. WHAT?!?! Well, I had COMPLETELY ignored the fact that Russia had an airbase in Murmansk. The sent flights of Backfires with AS-4 missiles to attack my airbases in Britain and I had not fighters dedicated to stopping them. Airbase damage puts a serious point hammer against NATO in this scenario. SO I was in trouble.

BUT, the good news was that I was tearing apart Soviet armored columns. With few fighters remaining the Soviets couldn't effectively challenge my ASuW patrols and I was tearing their tanks apart. I had just crept back into positive point land (still not a win but getting there), when this happened...

I am still flabbergated by that. There are no more Russian jammers, and I had airplanes, including ELINT aircraft and E-3 Sentrys, patrolling all over that approach, and never saw this many tanks on the move? I had enough assets left I could have stopped them. Ah well. You'd think that was it, now that I'm relieved. Well, actually no. I'm going to go out not with a whimper but with a bang! What do I mean by that? Well, I have a nuke remaining...

That act comes with a 10,000 point reduction in score, and both SOviet and American strategic forces start obliterating the entire world. Which was kind of fun to watch.

OK, my debrief. This was a fun but maddening scenario. There was a lot going on and I found myself getting so focused on one area of the battle that I lost track of other key areas (see the post about the Backfires). I still think my plan was basically sound, but my execution was off. If I'd put a CAP over the North Sea (there are planes on the map that are clearly meant for that mission) I'd have probably saved myself about 150 points in losses. That combined with NOT letting Russian T-80's roll over Ramstein would have been enough for a win. And as I said, I'm flabbergasted by that. I knew tanks were probably there and dedicated significant assets to find them, to no avail. If I'd kept either my U-2 or my SR-71 alive longer I probably would have found them.

Overall it was a lot of fun. How could it not be, with nuclear release being granted right from the get go?

Here you have it scroll down until near the end.

Be warned, it's big, hard and will make you believer that any joy it's but an illusion, and that life it's nothing but endless hardness followed by death.

If you happen to live in the British Islands I recommend playing with a Scotch on the Rocks at hand.
