In the North, Panzer Divisions are bottled inside the swamp area north of Peipus Lake, while the enemy movements are unknown in front of Pskov. Start building a line of defence behind the Luga River with reinforcements, while manning the Narva line with sufficient troops to keep the line strong.

Do not forget to put a good division with a lot of construction value in Pavlovo, since this the last line of defence for Osinovets. This is critical: If Osivonets is lost, Leningrad is lost.

Instruction for Air Command: Recon in priority in the area in front of Pskov and up in Estonia. We need to know what forces are committed for Pskov...

In the Centre, the whole line is holding firm, even in the landbridge. Next to no movement from the Fascist armoured and motorized divisions, except a small skirmish that has cleared the northern road to Vitebsk. Reclaim at once to prevent easy movement toward the city.

Minsk is still holding. This, together with the dwindling pockets being liquidated by the Nazis, assuredly hinders their supply lines to the Centre.[&o]

It will be T4 and they haven't event crossed the Dvina yet, so their 2-turn starting impetus is gone and we have bought precious time here.

Most of my strong points are around or over 20 Defense CV, so those will have to be Deliberate-Attacked to be displaced. Smolensk, meanwhile, is a rock.

I have brought Divisions from the rear to plug the remaining holes and begin building the Smolensk's MLR near Demidov.

I decided that Gomel itself is too vulnerable to be encircled if the Germains pierces through Zlobin. I have thus retreated the stronghold behind the river.

I won't hide that I am scared to death of a HQBU here. Even if they had next to no supply next turn, I do not know if it influences anything.

Situation critical in Southern Sector. the Nazi Panzer Group South has veered southward, completely overrunning Proskurov. This has created a huge pocket surrounding half of standing divisions of Southwestern Front, plus a small part of Southern Front that cover the Carpathian frontier.

Evacuate everything at once toward the Dnepr river, making a retreat in step to slow down the Fascists while you build your Main Line of Resistance along the Dnepr. Your first objective is to preserve your army. The aim is not make a stand at those temporary lines, but to buy time as you bring reinforcements to the Dnepr and build your forts.

The Dnepr, however is to be held and fought for. Make the Fascists pay in blood for every meter they pass over the River!

I requested Comrade Stalin to send Commissar Nikita Khrushchev to assist you - and ensure you do not fail in your mission. He will also bring your confidential mapplan below approved by STAVKA, for your eyes only.

Bonus though that I will have a 40+CV stack in the rough right on the rail line they want to convert next turn. Please keep air supplying that!!

Air is for the most part in reserve minus recon. I will be focusing with my AP on making Moscow Air Command a force to be recond with over the coming turns. I will be transferring both PVO air corps to the moscow air command army HQ. I will be fleshing out the 3 HQ's with AA Regiments, and the best leaders available along with all the modern fighters. The axis will regret coming within 5 hexes of the Moscow air command HQ's / Airfields.

Attached is a picture of the withdrawing Finnish SUs - a lot of Finnish manpower walks away just in the many withdrawing units. These have been set to no replacements and their commander encouraged to use them first and foremost where they can.

Just going back on old team emails I found this snippet in response to a question about reconnaisance which I thought worth sharing here again.
In the case of Axis there is so much recon available that I can do as much as I need AND you can do any you want - so no need for exclusivity or allocation. For the Soviets it would be a different matter.

The recon rules I use are

i) Get all airbases in range of front or which can be bombed to detection five (to know about the airgroups on them)
ii) Get all other airbases to detection level 3 (keeping track of airbases)[updated based on patches]
iii) All other units to detection four in clear or two if close (keeping track, help interdiction)[two-thirds of units on detection level 4 will be on at least detection level 1 next turn]
iv) Recon to know which units are at the front (ground commanders tactical use)
v) Recon to see if a hex will be intercepted (to fly unescorted day bombing)
vi) Recon to work out opponents % required to fly air doctrine (basically find a spot which only one airgroup can intercept and does, wait for them to lose some interceptors and repeat until they no longer do, check other interceptors still fly from the same base so it is not a fuel problem, and then repeat with others to get better and better ideas of what it is)
vii) Recon to degrade enemy interceptors
viii) Recon stacked on airbases to dilute enemy bombing of airbases from good aircraft

I see many others only use reconnaisance air groups for number iv - which is only a tiny part of what they are useful for. i-vi all provide extra information, so when someone says other uses of recon do not provide extra information they are wrong.

vii though is the interesting one. Looking back I cannot see any mention of this in the Matrix forums before then - so I may have been responsible for transmitting this monster into the Matrix world. I understand it to be a tactic of overwhelming an enemy fighter group, or fighter groups on one air base, with a large volume of reconnaisance flights to reduce the number of ready aircraft in the enemy. This was many-to-few. Some how in Matrix this transmuted to many-to-many, or trying to fatigue all enemy fighter groups with recon flights! Recon Spam was born! [:D]

EDIT: another use that has become apparent since is to find hexes and so flight paths with least flak.
