Why would anyone feel the need to bone up on the boring Med Sea campaign. They were just battles in a bathtub.[;)]
This was the only sig line I could think of.

I will read it first then. LOVE the First Team books and Scratch One Flattop will cover that area. Looking forward to it.

Am having to bone up on my Med knowledge right now so that is why most of the reading list comes from there.

I don't know if you have this but if not I would recommend this tome as part of any boning up on the Med strategy. Apart from being superb re the Littorios, there is quite a bit on RM naval activity generally:

The Littorio Class (Bagnasco and de Toro)

You can learn all sorts of interesting things, for instance, the Italians filled all their torpedo bulges with al dente spaghetti.

What a coincidence - I fill myself with al dente spaghetti and developed torpedo bulges!

And just a general recommendation for the O'Hara list...

His 2007 book "The US Navy against the Axis" is an excellent work giving short but concise narratives and analyses of some 40 Pacific surface engagements involving USN vs IJN warships (and also one involving an action off Casablanca against the Vichy French despite them not really qualifying as Axis).

Overall, it's a great reference for getting an understanding of how surface combat was being fought during the Pacific War as well as the evolving capabilities of the USN over time.
warspite1

Mmmmm.... looks like a good one-stop reference. The book section of Christmas list is pretty much filled up [:)]

I was kidnapped by Eva Green and Jessica Barden and forced to reenact scenes from Penny Dreadful.
It took a while for them to get tired of me...err, I mean for me to escape. [:D]

My bad - it was Billie not Eva. You wouldn't believe what they use as blood substitute.

Just as a caveat, it really is a superb reference for Pacific surface battles but nothing else. O'Hara's battle descriptions are pretty much stand alone, in that they don't sit within operational and strategic narratives like they do in his "In Passage Perilous". The best you get is a short summary between battles describing what higher level changes (strategic, operational, doctrinal, technology, etc) may have occurred in-between.
This was the only sig line I could think of.

Yeah, the one on the right looks prettier but I know which one's voice I'd like to hear reading me soothing bed-time stories as I drift off to the Land of Nod.

Agreed, from the peek Amazon gave I will treat this as a reference from which to drill down. I don't expect too much more from O'Hara but that's not to say his work doesn't have its uses [;)]

WOW, who knew that a post about a book on the Med would still be going two and a half years later, albeit slightly off topic!!! Interesting!

Well its an interesting subject - and some of us don't need an excuse to discuss all things World War II (in addition to replaying said war [8D]) - and when you add a contentious book to such an interesting subject therein sets the scene for a fun debate [:)].
