D-Day began with some trepidation, but also some unexpected moves by the IJN.

The large TF at Nagasaki moved to Fusan and hit the TF I'd just raced in there before it could disband. Some very large transports were hit, but only a couple sunk, and this led to some very unexpected and positive results elsewhere, in more important areas. [;)]

This move by the IJN would usually make this a very bad day for the Allies. Instead, the unintended feint here of bringing in this TF meant nothing was guarding Nagasaki.

Before anything else though the USN strike planes went on another nighttime KB hunt. A lot of drops from DBs and TBs, plus some by Cats, but no hits. Their DL is high though and I just realised that with no mines at Shimonoseki I can send subs into the inland sea.

The USN tangled with the IJN BBs before they left the Fusan area. Not a bad result, getting a few hits, and only one CL injured. It'll disband to get some work at Fusan.

The result of no defence at Nagasaki was this. I sent in two BB TFs to bombard and hopefully take out the IJN defenders as well as damaging the airfields. Instead, the BBs go in untouched and the airfields are decimated.

Only one air strike arrives during the entire turn. This small group of Vals hits the TFs at Kummamoto. It's the first moment in the turn when I know for sure that the invasion has made the target.

Kummamoto is under siege!

Troops land so incredibly undisturbed it feels too easy. I know the next turn could be quite different. I somehow surprised Lowpe with this move and no meaningful escorted air strikes from LBA or KB arrived, the IJN went the wrong way, and ground troops are minimal. There was no auto-bombardment, but there are only ~8k troop here, so it's very likely the Allies will take the base next turn.

The incredibly low disruption and fatigue along with the huge number of almost complete units are astounding for this time of game. These were landed primarily with AP/AK, no AGCs with amphibious Force HQs, no LSD/LST/LCI. I'm shocked.

Here are the air losses. For the next I'll be hitting several other small fields in the area to try and minimise return strikes. I can see he has a lot of bases with 50 fighters and 60-70 bombers in them. Plus Hiroshima with 250/200.

The current situation has about 150 ships at Kummamoto, but only about 10 surface combat ships. Those are all one hex to the SW, one hex off of Nagasaki as well.

The IJN BBs ended up back at Nagasaki, and will have full ammo, and that is a problem. My BBs are moving to Amami Oshima to replenish but won't be involved until after next turn. I have a lot of cruisers, but they're not in the invasion hex. They'll move there immediately, as will the CVs, but if Lowpe goes all-in with his remaining assets this could be very dicey. It's one thing to land, it's another to hold the landing and be able to replenish and supply it.

I don't know if the spell-checker is part of the forum software or part of Win 10, but it does an incredibly stupid thing when you click on the first window to add a word to the dictionary or replace the one you mistyped, it immediately opens another window where the first was and has the cursor set over the "Paste" command.
So if your left mouse button is touchy like mine and often clicks twice instead of once, it uses the extra click to paste whatever was on your clipboard into the word you are correcting or adding to your dictionary. Now, because your mouse button is touchy, it is very hard to highlight the unwanted text and delete it! [:@][:@]

... the IJN arrived in force. This is what I'd feared, and to see them hit this small DD TF first was a bit of a worry, since that meant my other, better TFs hadn't yet arrived.

One of these old four-stackers was hit and left with heavy fires, but both managed to get away in the murky thunderstorm night with only 2k visibility. This was an important factor in what came next!

At this point the USN showed up in force, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Not that this was a good matchup on paper, but these CAs do very well. The battle starts in low visibility and so the forces are 2k away from each other. The IJN gains no advantage from their longer range guns, and suffer from the faster firing, more accurate guns of the USN.

In the end Wichita takes a few direct hit and is damaged enough to disband into an escort TF. The Kirishima though is also crippled, and also forms a new TF, which is great for subsequent battles.

The next battle was dicey. The foxes got in with the hens, and there are a lot of very important hens here. Critically, the Allied radar picked them up at 9k and the 1k visibility allowed the task force to suspend operations and begin to get underway.

BB Fuso and two DDs do make it in and shoot up most of the already damaged escorts. I have BB Mississippi arriving here with four DDs to add on, but she didn't make it in time for this one. CL Detroit, CVE Long Island and a DD and DE go down, and AMC Chitral is in trouble. That's it though, which is amazing considering the amount of very precious ships that are here.

RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A)

Almost like a walk down memory lane for me.

I also got ashore first at Kummomoto. What's different is that my invasion occurred 20 months later than yours, the Russians were still long way from having cleared Korea and I scooped up all of the barrier islands before landing on Kyushu.

In may game the AI left Matsuyama (adjacent to Hiroshima) empty so I took it by air landing getting a quick foothold on Honshu.

Both Uleungdo and Oki Shoto could possibly be taken by air assault.
