Speedwise i succeeded in bringing it back to a reasonable time for a game with very many units and regimes on a big planet.

Not great, but not half an hour either.

I just saw that the "allow ai more time" option is enabled by default on the steam version. Maybe that should be turned off?

It can still be turned off in Prefs during a running game :)

I'm playing the current Steam release. Is it my imagination or is the AI noticeably better when used in slow mode.

I hope so. We wouldn't want to make you wait longer in exchange for worse AI moves :)

Thanks for the explanation, Vic. I am running quick turns and the AI doesn't seem too smart in combat. Back to slow turns I think.
