Turn 5. May/June 1940. Allied #1. (Continued).

1/11/21, 1:01 PM - [Allied]: I'll rebase him to Bucharest for now. Can move him elsewhere if you wish.
1/11/21, 1:02 PM - [Allied]: Look like that would put him out of supply
1/11/21, 1:02 PM - [Allied]: Is that right?
1/11/21, 1:03 PM - [Allied]: I'll go ahead and proceed with putting him in Bucharest and we can fix it later if necessary.
1/11/21, 1:03 PM - [Axis]: Don't put him there
1/11/21, 1:03 PM - [Axis]: On top of the HQ west of Bulgaria
1/11/21, 1:04 PM - [Allied]: copy.
1/11/21, 1:06 PM - [Allied]: <Media omitted>
1/11/21, 1:07 PM - [Allied]: I thought the Germans could draw supply from Bucharest. But apparently they can't. Is this correct?
1/11/21, 1:07 PM - [Axis]: Yes, that is correct
1/11/21, 1:08 PM - [Allied]: Another rules question: Can German units move into and retake hexes captured by the Soviets in Romania?
1/11/21, 1:09 PM - [Axis]: I don't believe the rules prohibit that...I am not 100% certain
1/11/21, 1:11 PM - [Allied]: I guess we'll soon find out ... or at least what Steve (i.e., MWiF) believes that to be.
1/11/21, 1:21 PM - [Allied]: <Media omitted>
1/11/21, 1:21 PM - [Allied]: back to you for MJ40, axis #2 impulse.
1/11/21, 1:28 PM - [Allied]: Time for a potty break for the dogs.
1/11/21, 1:28 PM - [Axis]: Unfortunately, I'm having to do a bit of work before I can get to it
1/11/21, 1:34 PM - [Allied]: No worry/no problem. Get to the game when you can. I have more than enough to keep me "busy".
1/11/21, 1:34 PM - [Allied]: Including a late lunch. 🥪
1/11/21, 2:00 PM - [Allied]: FYI: Posted a rules question on WiF groups.io board and verified the answer in MWiF. Bottom line is that German and/or Italian units (peacekeepers) cannot enter Soviet controlled hexes even in Romania until a Romania unit recaptures those hexes.
1/11/21, 2:01 PM - [Axis]: ok, thx

I am interested to know if the Germans can enter the Russian controlled hexes in Rumania. By my reading of the rules, German units may not enter those hexes, but Rumanian units can. Once the Rumanians do, then they are Rumanian controlled, and Germans could then enter.

Is this what MWiF does? This is not a situation that comes up often, so probably has not been tested as much as other rules do.

As for German supply in Rumania: Bucharest is a secondary supply source for German units, and a primary one for Rumanians. Thus Rumanian units can simply trace supply to it. German units can trace supply to Bucharest, but then Bucharest must trace back to a German primary supply source.

1/11/21, 5:28 PM - [Allied]: Don't use notional

No, German units cannot. Only Romania units can. That is, only units at war with the Soviets can.

As for German supply in Rumania: Bucharest is a secondary supply source for German units, and a primary one for Rumanians. Thus Rumanian units can simply trace supply to it. German units can trace supply to Bucharest, but then Bucharest must trace back to a German primary supply source.
Correct. So, supply to German units can be cut if their supply line into Romania is cut.

Both verified in MWiF. This is my first extended and real experience with peacekeepers, or more accurately advisors. Because the German units in Romania don't seem to be keeping the peace but adding to the conflict. [:D]

Something looks wrong about the results of the first paradrop combat. It was on the blitz table, so the first loss must be a MOT, MECH, ARM, or HQ-ARM. After that, the Germans did not empty the hex of enemy units, so the parachute unit would be destroyed.

[Edit: Taking a closer look at the combat odds, the German used their ENG's ability to attack over the river without being halved. So the ENG should have been the first loss.]

Yes, this causes a loss of two units when only one is called for on the CRT, but occasionally the can happen: Say the result was -/-, no losses on either side. The parachute unit would still be destroyed.

However, I am not certain of this and am going to ask in the main forum.

The game acknowledges there is one loss of one "invading unit", which I believe is the paratrooper, the problem is that then it goes against the rules by assigning the PARA the first loss when it needs to use it for a "blitzing unit" or in any case to the engineer (if the circumstances for an engineer loss are given).

So it behaves as if there was no blitz and no engineer was used. In that case, it would be correct. But it is not the case.

EDIT:
Combat Engineers
Face-up ENG are not halved or thirded when attacking or overrunning across a river, canal or fort hexside. They also provide this benefit to as many land units they are stacked with as the ENG unit’s combat value. ENG attacking across both a river and a fort hexside, ignore only the fort hexside. The defender still has all other combat benefits if behind a fort hexside.
Engineers provide +1 to the land combat die roll (see 11.16.5) when attacking a 2 or 3 factory stack city. Defending engineers subtract 1 from the die roll when defending a 2 or 3 factory stack city. These benefits are in addition to the other benefits and can be used simultaneously (e.g. gaining both benefits when attacking across a river into a 2 factory city).
If an ENG provides any benefits in an attack, it always suffers the first loss (even before white print units attacking in winter).

Ronnie, I realize that this combat happened about a week ago, but would you have a saved game from which we could recreate the attack? Only the units that took part in the attack would have to move, and the paradrop could happen without air activity.

I have the turn at the beginning of the (axis) impulse. Should, I think, be able to recreate it from that.
