An Aussie Affair.

My generals have presented me with a plan in invade Wake and try to draw the US surface forces out to play but to be honest I don't think I'll do it - Raver will just let me take the place, and wait for my ships to go home, and then take it right back (I'm not moving a CD unit all the way out there to stop him!).

On the other hand, Raver must have really kicked some *** over at Chinese HQ because they are everywhere and moving FAST - two enemy units are already in the hex next to Hanoi!!!!~ Am scrambling to get some troops in there to stall them - while further north in the mainland I have lots of troops sitting in silly places where Raver doesn't need to worry about them - I am withdrawing them into my defensive perimeter (no weak spots I need to worry about anyway) and will then condense them into a proper thrust inland - something along the line of Barbarossa, only better.

The aussies at Rabaul were outnumbered, undersupplied and undersupported, and this turn they surrendered, and my three small inf units can have a rest. Miri and Brunei also fall this turn, changing my economy from "soon to be crippled" to something much closer to equilibrium (lots and lots of oil, resources from Kendari/Wuchow, it ALL makes a difference). This is just as well because I have tinkered with my production model to downgrade float plane production in order to have more kates, zeros, vals and betties on hand, and so far my pools aren't empty (and are refilling faster than I'm using them). In fact the only "active" aircraft that I am not replacing faster than I'm loosing is the claude - and I'm ok with running out of thme if I get zeros as replacements.

My precious artillery units in China have been dispatched to the defensive strongpoints of my line - and there they'll probably make a difference. Am tempted to try and evacuate my artillery out of Hanoi before the fighting starts however - would be a shame to loose it (still unsure of Raver's strength - I know what I would have sent).

My little cvs continue to have a ball north of Borneo, while the Junyo has some fun east of the P.I. A sub puts a torp through the Boise (brilliant), while Raver's cls and DDs in the south bombard Kendari - hoping to catch my unloading transports. Of course I wasn't stupid enough to leave them there, so he only damaged the single AP in port (which will probably sink).

Am very curious Raver - did I sink anythnig at pearl? nothing on the sunk ship list (disappointing considering how many planes and pilots I lost in that disaster). I'm guessing the remnants at Pearl will be moving to be his "eastern pacific force" - while I hope with all my heart that his RN surface assets and the Hermes are steaming for Malaya (maybe with some bonus transports). Kido Butai will be happy to welcome them.

A new top secret Operation called "Oar" is being planned for two weeks time. The assets just need time to assemble and move out.

Stockpiling Bataan in Nov.41 was no longer part of the program. The Defend the beaches was now policy. Millions had been allocated and tons of supply were on there way.

In a letter prepared on Dec 5,1941 Marshalled outlined for MacArthur what had been done to strengthen USAFFE.

"Reinforcements and Equipment already approved require 1,000,000 ship tons. 55 ships have already been obtained and approxamtely 100,000 ships tons of supplies are in route. Approximately twice that number is ready for immediate shipment to ports of embarkation.m Request for equiping of the Philipine "except the M1 Garand have been approved and are being shiped as rapidly as they can be assembled and loaded on ships. Not only will you recieve all your supporting Lt Artillery (130 75mm guns), but also 48 155 mm Howitzers, 24 155 guns, and 3 mobile AA regiments. A sum of $269,000,000 had been requested for the PA and early passage is expected. I assure you of my purpose to meet the fullest extent possible your recomendations for personel and equipment neccessary to defend the Philipines." (Morton)

He was further told that by the end of Dec he could expect no less than 240 P-40s and some 72 B-17s. At the outbreak of the war their was a convoy enroute with 52 a-24s, 18 p-40s, 4 Arty Bns., 340 vehicles, 3,500,000 rounds of .30&.50cal ammunition, 600 tons of bombs and 9000 drums of aviation fuel. Additionally the 34th Infantry Regt was embarking at SF with addional supplies and equipmement on that very day.

This isnt a case of MacArthur being delusional, This was adopted strategy and the conerstone of national policy of deterent force against Japan. For every day that past USAFFE was getting stronger and stronger. Now in lue of the Nov. War warnings what was he suppose to do? Say oops never mind, all is lost defeat is certain, we will just go back to the old plan.

Almost all the points you make are accurate (with the exception of MacArthur
not being delusional---His plan to turn the Phillippines into the "Switzerland of
the Pacific" was pretty far-fetched). They are also beside the point. Doug's
"Defend the Beaches Plan" was totally dependent on not only recieving all these
promised "goodies"---but in having time to TRAIN his just drafted and organized
Fillipino Troops to USE them. To really accomplish that would take another
year---a year anyone with an ounce of sense could see he probably wasn't
going to get. A rational approach would have had the supplies stored on Bataan
in case the Japanese didn't cooperate with Mac's schemes and attacked before
he got "all his ducks lined up". Without fully trained and equipped Fillipino troops
WPO was the ONLY workable plan available---anything else was a pipe-dream.

And MacArthur himself was the source of the Defend the Phillippines Policy---
Marshall just went along because it was the only way to get MacArthur's co-
operation at all, and it appealed to Roosevelt on political grounds. War Dept.
staff studies all agreed the Philippines were a "write off" in the event of an
early Japanese attack. Roosevelt loved airplanes, and thought "waving some
B-17's" at the Japanese might discourage them. He had NO idea that he had
GUARANTEED war with Japan by imposing economic sanctions that left them
no other way out.

Well Rabal feel a few turns ago..............what a shame....those boys did a wonderful job of holding back the invaders.

Things on the Malay peninsula are looking grim....Malaya is completely cut off from Burma and I have grave fears for the future of Rangoon....the loss of which would be just as dramatic if not worse than that of Singapore. However I have troops on the water from India to guard against this. Somehow I think that Luskan will not want to move that far west. And I think that he will be even less inclind to do so once he sees how hot china is about to get. Speaking of which I am going to have to figure out a way toget more supplies to the chinese...they do a very good job of tieing down large numbers of Japanese.
Infact I would even go so far as to say that China is on of the Allies major keys in the early stages of the war.

Most of the Aussies are now safely on the water from Singapore much to the British governments disgust. However if anything the recent fall of Rabal shows that the Aussies were being prudent. The cables that Churchill is sending Curtin saying that he does not think that Australia will be invaded are ringing somewhat hollow.

The Dutch are still being pig-headedly stuborn and refusing to give a inch of ground. Guess that they are still miffed at what happened in Europe last year, but from a strategic POV it is useless to try and hold such a large sway of territory with small garrisons. Even the Australia offer to base the remains of the Dutch navy in Australia have been rebuffed, and it looks like the Dutch navy plans on going down fighting....such a waste of good ships. One bright note is that the dutch merchant navy has decided that Perth is an excellent city to set up it's new HQ and most of the fmerchant fleet is now sailing for Westen Australia, loaded with refugees.

The Yanks are still in flap over what to do. PH is surrounded by at least 12 jap subs, and to rub salt in the wound, the US navy has had no luck in sinking a single one in the last 4 days. MacArthur is still flapping his gums about this victory and that victory that he is personally leading.......and yet more and more red meatball flags seem to be getting raised. Kinda makes you wonder.
PH itself is in good nick and 4 damaged BBs with escorts sailed two days ago (avoiding the subs) to make for the west coast and the repair yards. I still have a good sized fleet at Pearl if Luskan comes a sniffing again!

Well, Rangoon is on my target list, and I dare say that since shipping troops from Karachi takes so long, my indian ocean jaunt will arrive long before Raver's troops do. Even if they do arrive - I have vastly suprerior firepwoer and numbers closing on the area, and I have a plan to take Rangoon even if Raver does reinforce.

Have created a couple of supply problems for myself that I'll need to fix, just unwilling to involve the AI in case it decides to make any big moves on its own.

In other news, Raver's Chinese have arrived at Wuchow - 6 of them (I'm guessing they're all INF) against my 2 Inf units. Lots of firepower on the way to keep the place however - I can only hope that those troops have come from Nanning - now caught between my forces at hanoi (not that many there yet) and my troops at Wuchow.

My small cvs are exhausted and returning to a nearby port to replenish some planes and supplies now that Kido Butai has reached port and refuelled and rearmed. Still planes in the pool thankfully.

Am tempted to go for Tarakan, Balikpapan, Samarinda, but I don't want to over extend myself and fight on too many fronts at once. My malaya ops are well suplpied and more than well armed (especially if the Aussie troops have left). Tempted to maybe steal a spot on the D.E.I. just to annoy Raver.

Well I took Alor star with no fuss, and am moving towards Singapore with every minute. My air force is now set up and supplied at Khota Bharu and we'll see some big time results from them very soon I'm sure (the AI didn't do a good enough job of this.). Also, garrisons are already on the move - even for bases I haven't stolen yet.

Raver's bombers start to pick up - and since I haven't bombed the crap out of Clark, a b17 took off and punched a hole in one of my transports at Pescadores.

Of course, in the most important news, 6 of raver's inf units, and 2 chinese base forces arrived at Wuchow this turn, while several other chinese units have attacked my rail network (however like I said, no gaps so there will be some fighting this turn!). At Wuchow both sides bombarded, and my art unit there really showed its worth. More troops on the way, and movnig to flank the enemy (transferred a bunch of armoured units in early).

I've moved some fighters into Brunei to cover my transports there, and I've also finally reached Victoria's point. Onwards to Rangoon!!

This turn I stamped my dominance all over the mainland and all over Raver's Chinese and British troops. I predicted Raver's movements perfectly, and by next turn I'll be in position to encircle and destroy his 3 seperate Chinese armies, instead of just spank them around like I did this turn.

At Wuchow, I revealed that I had three arty units at Wuchow, instead of just one. Little misleading lie that one Culled 1100 of Raver's invading Chinese and have even more troops piling into the besieged city this turn to drive him out. In the meantime, the battle at 47,35 threatens to cut Raver's troops at Wuchow off from behind. more troops arriving there next turn too.

Pleased to say that Victoria's point was an easy conquest with a small british troop there that were easily defeated. They surrendered and now my garrison troops have arrived to build the fort up and repel any future invasion. Even a small CD unit on the way, while my armoured regiment moves off towards my next objective.

My troops arrived in force at Georgetown this turn, while others moved down the coasts towards Kuantan and Kuala Lumpur - even more troops unloading at Songkhia - I learnt well from the experience vs the AI and have made sure I have enough troops going to Malaya to swamp the enemy properly, none of this siege and wearing them down crap.

On Luzon my troops are still landing in the north and the south of the island, while my advance two divisions have arrived at Tugerarao. Engineer units are also on the way to make certain that enemy fortifications at bataan don't cause a headache (no supplies there anyway).

At Hanoi, well Raver got another nasty surprise and his units (more than I thought!) retreated up the line after my shock attack. I will be waiting for my new division to land before I pursue them back to nanning.

Well on paper the general offensive in China looked like a good idea But I have really under-estimated the strength of the Jap forces and as a result have been slapped badly :rolleyes: I just can't see what Luskan is flapping his gums about when he talks of "cutting off troops from behind". Either the Chinese intel is ****-poor or Luskan is talking shite. (mental note...launch more chinese recon flights).
* A warning here for future allied players...the Jap Arty is deadly !

1941 is just a series of defeats followed by more defeats, with little that the allied player can do. I did have a plan of flying in either a RAF or a USAAF unit into Russia so as to try and get Luskan (or the AI) to launch an attack on the Red Bear. But this map is so bloody huge that I just can't seem to find a way of getting them their short of launching from a CV....and then i am unsure if the game will allow it.

Ha! If Luskan thinks that he can just waltz into Rangoon then he is in for a real shock. I have just finished unloading three fresh Indian Divisions there. He is welcome to try....so at least for the time being Burma is safe. If only that idiot Churchill would understand the scope of what the british forces are facing then maybe he would send more troops to my aid.

Mac's troops are doing a wonderful job, but somehow I don't think that I have seen the full force of the Japanese assault just yet. Luskan seems to be content with building up troops on the beach heads that he has under his control in the PI before launching his full offensive........truth be known...why should he hurry? It is not like I have anywhere to run, and each day just sees my troops get weaker.

Hmmmm........should I spend R&D points on P-51 Bs or Ds??????

Well, Raver had a better turn this day in the south pacific.

Sure, he lost Georgetown. Sure, he took another slapping from my ever growing army in Wuchow - and he's about to loose Tavoy and Kuala Lumpur and more bases on Mandanao - and sure, I've got yet more divisions still en route and landing on northern and southern Luzon as well as Malaya (as well as another little surprise peripheral invasion in the pipeline). But all my CVs are in port taking on replacements (pool drying up - glad I made those production changes however or my losses at Pearl really would have been crippling). Still haven't sunk any BBs from that Pearl raid = extreme waste of life on my 1st and 2nd raids.

Also, my 47,35 army in China hadn't coalesced on the hex yet - of 8 units headed there, only 1 was actually there - and was driven back into whatever base that is Kushing? something? by Raver's Chinese - their first victory, even if it only cost me 180 troops. Question is, does it get complicated with his troops attacking my city, or is he just going to sit there for my hammer to arrive.

This turn also marked the end of the US transport sink-o-rama, and rather my transports copped a couple of hits while my bombers didn't even sight any of Ravers. Not worried about Rangoon - I've got 3 BIG divisions earmarked for that op, although only 2 are actually on the way so far, that is 800+assault points + 50 from my engineer regiment marching as fast as they go + 150 from the three tank regiments at Hanoi that are being diverted to that front. I think I've got enough gumf to take Rangoon (I have a very devious plan).

Am much happier with the amount of supplies that I'm a: generating, b: shipping and c: unloading - auto supply seems to be working better than my other game (I've interfered less) and bases that need supply are getting it, and I'd bet I've got more supplies in malaya and luzon than Raver does at this point.

All very exciting stuff - but already I'm feeling some operational fatigue. it would be really nice to have conquered the SRA and be resting my troops empire-wide (or at least stalemating) for a while just to relax my brain. Have writer's cramp from all the furious note taking about where I'm sending what to arrive by when for what reason blag blah blah.

Raver has lost 6 subs in 10 turns, I was about to asy that this was obviously a bit whacky, however all of them were hit in port raids and have sunk in port (800kg AP bombs tend to finish subs if they are unlucky enough to get hit - a betty also torpedoed one at manila which is technically possible, a bit of a lucky strike) .

In another thread Mogami said to take the SRA would need to use the historical forces to do this. I do not know enough about the Japanese divsions used to tell from the AAR's if this is happing. Luskan do you think you will get it down faster or not even get all of the SRA.

Normally it takes the historic forces required - and in my other AAR I just left that initial plan up to the AI (so the historic plan). This time, I've committed myself to many more opening objectives to hamstring Raver later down the line. Kendari and Menado and Davao, Brunei and miri all for my economy and to really mess up Raver's line of suplpy and retreat.

I think that I have not committed enough troops to Luzon yet, and will continue the bulid up of supplies and troops there until I have overwhelming force (I ahve the troops, I have the time, no sense in sending in less than overwhelming force and taking losses to beat him off).

Already the 56th ? division has arrived at Cotabato and smacked raver's troops out of there already. They will continue to hound these troops to their death, before capturing the rest of mandanao (now my Davao garrison is finally arriving - had forgot to send them earlier).

Also, the Imperials guards pulled a great number on the British at Tavoy and out of the 3 divisions and 2 armoured regiments participating in the race to Moulmein and Rangoon they are going to get there first. Fingers crossed for when I get there.

In Malaya speedy old Raver has been saving every mobile unit he can, and a large group (7) are at Kuantan while the Kuala Lumpur defences almost look deserted. I don't know if he plans to make a stand at Kuantan (I wouldn't) but if he doesn't have any other way to evac troops, then he might. Lots of ships in singapore harbour however, under lots of cap it seems - so maybe he is getting them away without my bombers or float planes catching him.

More troops are en route to malaya - several engineering units to deal with Singapore's fort and two more large mixed brigades to land behind the enemy and try and cut some of them off.

Also, more troops and supplies have arrived at Rabaul, so if Raver tried to get close I'll see him.

In China, well I am still co-ordinating htings poorly, with setting 1 unit in a stack to attack and forgetting the others etc etc. The bombardment at Wuchow should have been much much bigger - the fights you see on the combat report are a result of such poor timing. My units, especially some of the larger ones are frightfully slow to get out of the field and the jungle and onto roads and faster moving lines of communicationa nd transport to get to the fronts where Raver's Chinese are annoying me (however they aren't threatening any sort of breakthrough).

Raver's troops from his aborted Hanoi attack have retreated another hex in front of my large, fast moving army there (they really are moving about 10 times faster than every other unit I have in china, since 3 of them are ARM units). This puts them in the vital railroad intersection hex that links the Nanning "line" with the Chinese supply base. If I take that hex, Nanning is cut off from any supplies and surrounded on two sides. That will certainly only end one way. Also have a garrison force earmarked for just that hex.

Raver's chinese attack in the north at Tutung was wasteful - but my troops there aren't really in very good condition sot hey didn't perform much better than your average chinese rabble. Going to have to spruce things up for them.

My base force is finally unloading at Legaspi - and that will stop Raver's air attacks there once I put some fighters (I can support 250, so i'm tempted to put all the nates there . . .) there to stop him.

Luskan,

In your opening at PH, the altitudes on the planes look out of whack for a 'typical' carrier strike. Torpedo bombers at 20,000? I understand they can be used as level bombers as well but the altitudes may give a clue as to why you lost so many planes.

Another turn, another day of frustration at how slow things are going.

Raver tried some deliberate attacks around the palce this turn, while my bombardments just smacked him down harder, especially at Wuchow, 47,35, and Tugeragao(sp).

About the only real news I've got is my betties sank the mauritius trying to sneak out of singapore for Colombo with 6 torps. My large divisions from Miri and Brunei are alrady back at Saigon, reforming from their sub units, and being shipped to my ever growing base at Khota Bharu which now has a HQ, base force, fighters, bombers, and lots of inbound troops.

Happy to say that Kido Butai has assumed a very low profile and Raver has no idea where they are.

Also happy to say several of his transports were at Tarakan, probably unloading reinforcements to help hold the place, and were bombed by my a/c at extreme range from my little cvs at Miri. There were a few hits, but now I know they're there, htey won't escape.

The waiting between turns for my slow moving land units to get into position is really starting to irritate me. Also, my top secret operation Oar has had to be indefinitely post phoned because I've allocated the forces required to subdue a few of Raver's bases and don't want to screw it up with only half effort.

Well two turns have passed and a few interesting developments.

Firstly I took Tugeragao without any fuss or inflicting more than 1000 casualties on Raver's filipino troops, which are probably racing back to manila as fast as they'll go.

Second, my endless bombardments at Wuchow worked - after loosing maybe 5000 troops, Raver's chinese pulled out - one group splintering to the north west and then the next turn when my troops shock attacked, another retreated to the east. However Raver's chinese have pushed my troops out of a base in northern China - how the hell they got in there is beyond me. I have lots of troops on hand, but he'll probably take the base long before I get there. Good thing it isn't a supply line.

From Hanoi my troops have reached the vital intersection and taken it without a fight as Raver's chinese are running for nanking. however with my success at Wuchow, Nanning is cut off from any supplies from both sides. I'll apply a little pressure and that should be that.

My troops have arrived in Kuala Lumpur and are poised to begin their march to Mersing. many more troops pouring onto both Luzon and Malaya and I sort of wish they weren't now that I've got so many betties in around around both that there really isn't a lot of point in invading most of the little bases. I just want any resources I can steal - Raver's troops aren't worrying me in the slightest. I wonder what their starving time frame is.

Raver's bombers out of singapore got a couple of hits on my bbs but nothing that caused any real damage.

In some disappointing news, that bastard took my bait at Rabaul (had some transports and pgs just sitting there screaming "attack me" - they were empty). however he took the bait a turn early and at night with Canberra and some surface ships - sinking an AP and a pg boat while the trap was still being set. Miserable failure that one.

What is wrong with torpedo bombers at 20 000 ft? That should have meant they were 10000 feet above the allied CAP no? With fighter escort up there with them! The allied cap shouldn't have even been able to shoot down 10, much less 44 of the most elite pilots out there!!!!!!!!!!!!

They took shells and slapped fins on them - this is what got the Arizona. It penetrated one of the turret tops and went off in the magazine. I believe several other ships were hit with these weapons, although obviously not with the same effect.

So 20K is higher than historical, but still in keeping with historical tactics. I don't see a problem with that.

I don't think it is a problem. With the altitudes and the high losses, I saw the altitudes with fighters at 1000, torps at 20K and the others scattered in between as a possible clue. I do think the loss ratio was high. I am certainly no critical genius when it comes to this game, just an observer!

My losses were ASTRONOMICAL compared to a: every other raid I've made on pearl and b: the historical one.

44 was just air to air - look back at my post about pearl to see how many others I lost (another 30 or 40 I'm guessing to flak).

Believe they were 14", not 18" shells, that were used. The real strangeness
is the 20,000 ft for level bombing with a Kate. These were Torpedo Bombers
that also had rather rudementary bombsights for level bombing. From 20,000
ft you need something as complex as a Norden bombsight, or a target the size
of a city. Kate's had neither, and did their level bombing from half that height
or less if they wanted a hope of hitting a target. From 20,000, they'd be lucky
to hit "somewhere in the harbor".

Thanks for correcting me. I agree the 20K height is unusual. To be honest, my only real experience with this problem is from the movie Tora, Tora, Tora, where the Japanese are practicing bombing with some sort of bombsight at the beginning of the movie. I admit that isn't the most informed source.

I don't know what height they actually attacked at, but I agree 20K is too high. I still think it COULD have happened at that height, although I agree they wouldn't be too accurate. Does anyone know if Kates had an oxygen system? If not, than they shouldn't be allowed over 10-12K or else the pilots would pass out...
