Yugoslavia

Post by jjdenver »

If you just DOW Yugo instead of waiting for the coup event to bring them in on allied side - is there a downside to this? Or it's fine and won't cause diplomatic problems with USSR/USA? ty.

USSR will get a moderate mobilization increase.

One of the up-sides to DOW on Yugoslavia early is that it allows you to reposition your troops onto the Soviet border easier if you plan on having a very early spring Barbarossa. The Yugoslavia coup can sometimes occur 1/2 turns before Barbarossa if you go late. The downside is that you have USSR mobilization / UK does not have to pay the MPP to fund the revolt. When they fund the revolt I believe the Allied player can also move the Yugoslavian troops / reinforce / upgrade them and there is an HQ so it may actually take more than 1 turn to cap them unless you have prepared for it.

Also the Allies get a large positive diplo bonus on Greece, if they fund the coup, basically requiring the Axis to conquer Greece by force, if they don't want it to become Allied (though they might want to do that anyway). This won't happen if the Axis take out Yugoslavia early.

I don't fiddle around. I cut to the chase and invade in September and take the Italian option on Greece. If you go about it properly, you can be done with both by Feb. '41, giving you time to get it set up properly for Barbarossa (Late May or early June).

What triggers the coup and how do you increase the chances of it?

You can't increase the chance of it, it's just a decision for the UK and the coup date is somewhat random - it's in the manual:

DE 104 - UK: Support A Pro-Allied Coup In Yugoslavia?

Event fires: On the 3rd March 1941 when London is in Allied hands, France has
surrendered, both Germany and Italy are Axis and not surrendered, and Yugoslavia is
aligned with the Axis but not fully mobilized.

 Cost of accepting: 60 MPPs at 30 MPPs a turn for 2 turns.

 Yes: Yugoslavia joins the Allies sometime between the beginning of March and the
end of April 1941. It receives a half strength HQ. Greece will swing 30-40% towards
the Allies. Germany loses 1,000 National Morale points, and will only recoup them
when Yugoslavia surrenders.

 No: Yugoslavia signs the Tripartite Pact and joins the Axis and Germany gains 1,000
National Morale points.
