Another non-combat day. I am sure the allies are consolidating the Rabaul area and they are building ports and airfields. I expect them to move up the northern coast of New Guinea next - as they don't need carrier support for that. At least until they get near Sorong - which will put them into air range of Sorong and Babeldaob.

Ship building is going nicely though we are burning through our 1 million NavShip Points quickly. We are averaging a -1200 pts a day currently with roughly enough points to last approximately 120 more days.

Upcoming ship arrivals:
In 27 days we will receive 2 new CVs: Unryu and Amagi
In 39 days we will receive CV Katsuragi
In 50 days we will receive CV Shinano
In 78 days we will receive CVL Kasigi
In 99 days we will receive 3 CVLs: Omi, Goroda and Genjiko
In September we will receive 5 additional CVLs
In August will we receive 3 Mogami-class CAs

On the Aircraft front:
We should begin full scale production of the Ki-84r Frank in July 1943. The A7M2 Sam will be in either July or early August depending on some lucky rolls. Now production will be low at first until I build up the factories. I will be burning through a lot of supply for this. I have roughly 2000 Ha-45 engines in the pool and am building up the Ha-43 pool as well.

How are you guys moving this campaign so fast? This would be a full time job for me doing so many turns! I am still on 7 Feb 1942 on my main one!

We average 3+ turns a day.. Sometimes we get up to 5 or 6 turns in a day. Nomad is retired and I work from home, so I can run turns while working most of the time. Our normal turn around is 1-2 hours per turn. I receive the turn, run it and takes about 40-60 mins of active game time to do my side.. Send it to Nomad - he takes roughly the same amount of time and sends it back. On a good day, we can flip a full turn in 2-2.5 hours.

Finally some action... well sort of...

Sub Warfare:
RO-67 is spotted by enemy PF Lahaina but the PF cannot find the sub to attack.
I-19 decides not to fire on AM Bombay. Looks like another AM on its way to Truk.
RO-67 attempts to attack, but cannot get a firing solution on enemy LCT. It does however avoid any damage in return.

So a bit of action, but mostly more non-action !!

Sub Warfare:
SS Truant is located in the Straights of Malacca, but DD MIchishio is unable to inflict any damage.
SS Tuna attacks an xAK in two separate attacks, both times hitting with a single torpedo sinking the ship.

South Pacific:
Enemy Marine Raiders come ashore on the dot base Tabiteuea in the Gilbert Islands and capture the undefended base.

An enemy AM shows up at Truk and attempts to clear some mines. It gets 4 mines cleared before CD guns hammer it, leaving it heavily damaged and burning.

Sub Warfare:
SSX Ha-10 on patrol at Truk comes across AM Bombay crippled and burning from Truk's CD guns and puts a torpedo into her sinking it.

South Pacific:
Enemy troops come ashore at Ocean Island disabling a bunch of squads and guns.
Heavy bombers return to Truk targeting the airfield only - adding some damage. Our AA units shoot down 7 bombers in the attacks - a great day for the AA units at Truk.

Enemy carriers are spotted just north of Nauru Island which means Nomad will be taking Ocean and Nauru off my hands over the next couple turns. I only spot 1 CV and 1 CVE in the TF and if I had KB nearby I would dash down there for another fight.

South Pacific:
I had 3 DDs sitting at Howland Island - dot base next to Baker Island - to waylay an under-escorted invasion fleet on Baker Island. So last turn when enemy troops landed at Baker, I formed the 3 DDs into a TF and ordered them to Baker with retirement on so they would hit anything there and run away.. Well they went to Baker, found an enemy TF and did nothing. No combat happened and they ran away. There was a brief message in the combat events saying it encountered an enemy TF but no combat happened. Not sure why it went down like that.

Troops unload at Nauru to support the attack at the end of the turn that captured the base for the allies. Unfortunately over 200k resources were stockpiled on the island.

Sub Warfare:
SS Truant launches six torpedoes at DD Oshio and misses. DD Oshio attacks and scores one near miss.

South Pacific:
Enemy troops land at Tarawa where I have no troops.
Enemy troops also land at Howland Island. My DDs are nearby and have been ordered in - report indicate enemy strength consisting of at least 3 DDs and 1 APD - probably in a Fast Transport TF. Enemy troops capture Howland Island - its the 1st Marine Raider Battalion again.

China:
My Tank Regiment at Hami attacked and despite getting 1:2 odds, they inflicted some losses on the Chinese defender while not taking any losses in return. I will continue this fight until I take the base. Reinforcements are on their way and will arrive in a couple days.

It seems Nomad is not defending the northern Chinese bases so I will pick them off - a couple have resources and one has light industry and oil as well.

Sub Warfare:
I-19 is spotted by an allied bombardment TF on their way to Truk. I-19 escapes with minimal damage.

South Pacific:
My 3 DDs made it back to Baker Island where they ran into some escorts... 3 IJN DDs vs 4 allied DDs. The first encounter we landed 1 12cm shell on DD Smith causing some fires. The second encounter we landed 5 10 and 12cm shells on DDs Smith,
Preston and Flusser, leaving Smith and Preston on fire. The third encounter happened at Howland Island and we landed another 8 shells on DDs Preston, Reid and Flusser, leaving them all on fire. They landed one 3inch shell on DD Tachekaze.

As my 3 DDs left the scene and headed back toward the Marshalls they ran into an allied CL TF and got beat up. They landed 4 shells, two bounced off armor, two did some damage. They took 10 shells, leaving DD Aoi crippled and burning - she was later scuttled.

Allied troops land at Madang - looks like part or the whole Australian 12th Brigade.

Allied P-38s, and a lot of them, swept the skies over Truk, running into my fighters there. In a pitched battle we lost more aircraft but overall did a good job fending off the sweeps. Five P-38G squadrons swept the skies (125 fighters in all). According the intelligence screen:

A6M5c lost: 38; 31 in Air to Air
Tojo lost: 8; 7 in Air to Air
P-38G lost: 29; 25 in Air to Air

Overall I lost 13 pilots killed and 15 wounded. All 25 of the P-38 pilots should be killed or MIA as this happened over Truk.

I was trying to land some AA units at Truk and the TF arrived during the night but for some reason it did not unload any troops during the day phase. With the sighting of a Bombardment TF coming, and recon believes there are CVs with it, I am withdrawing. Makes me mad that I risked the sub-infested waters around Truk to deliver no troops.

Sub Warfare:
SSX Ha-15 is spotted by DD escorts at Truk and heavily prosecuted and sunk.
SSX Ha-12 is spotted by what looks like a DD ASW TF and sunk at Truk.

South Pacific:
More allied troops come ashore at Madang and they attacked capturing the base.
The allied TF attempts to clear mines at Truk with disastorous results... They cleared a total of 19 mines, counting the one they hit.

TF 48 encounters mine field at Truk (112,108) - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

203 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Allied Ships
DMS Long, Shell hits 11, heavy fires, heavy damage
DMS Dorsey, Shell hits 12, heavy fires, heavy damage
DMS Lamberton, Shell hits 14, heavy fires, heavy damage
DMS Zane, Shell hits 12, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Morris, Mine hits 1, on fire

Truk Naval Fortress firing at DMS Long
DMS Long firing at Truk Naval Fortress
Truk Naval Fortress firing at DMS Dorsey
Truk Naval Fortress firing at DMS Lamberton
DMS Lamberton firing at Truk Naval Fortress
Truk Naval Fortress firing at DMS Zane
DMS Zane firing at Truk Naval Fortress
18 mines cleared

Depending on which guns hit those DMSs (anything from small 8cm to large 20cm) they won't make it back to port. DD Moris sunk after hitting the mine.

Enemy TF bombards Howland Island.
Enemy troops land at Makin and capture the undefended base. Nomad must have been expecting resistance as he landed a large chunk of the 24th Inf Division.

Amphibious Assault at Makin (136,125)

TF 255 troops unloading over beach at Makin, 136,125

Allied ground losses:
448 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 201 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 102 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 102 (0 destroyed, 102 disabled)
Vehicles lost 100 (0 destroyed, 100 disabled)

13 troops of a USA 42 Rifle Squad accidentally lost during unload of 24th Infantry Div /8

Enemy CVs sprinted north and west of Truk, but for some reason the amphib TF I was escorting only moved 3 hexes instead of six like it should have, leaving my TFs within 7 hexes of the allied CVs - within their range. They launched a decent sized attack but it was shredded by my CAP. A total of 8 SBDs made it through the CAP to attack and they all missed.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Truk at 113,106

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 31 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M5c Zero x 167

Allied aircraft
F6F-3 Hellcat x 210
SBD-3 Dauntless x 83

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5c Zero: 7 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
F6F-3 Hellcat: 5 destroyed
SBD-3 Dauntless: 49 destroyed
SBD-3 Dauntless: 2 destroyed by flak

Japanese Ships
CV Kaga
BB Yamato 2
CVL Shoho
CVL Yedo

My CVs reacted within range of his CVs (6 hexes) but never launched a strike - was not overly happen about that, but tbh the strike would have probably been mauled by his CAP. The air attack was brutal and reported losses are:

A6M5c CAP: 25 lost; 24 to Air to Air
F6F-3 Hellcat: 14 lost; 10 to Air to Air
SBD-3 Dauntless: 66 lost; 62 to Air to Air

I lost 8 pilots killed. All of the allied pilots shot down should be lost -- a good day. Issue is he has more air power than I do and I need to escape.

Sub Warfare:
SSX Ha-17 fires two torpedoes at DD Radford but misses (at Truk).
I-17 fires two torpedoes at DD Wyrick but misses and gets lightly damaged in return. She is heading home for repairs.

South Pacific:
2 DDs hit mines at Truk - one each !!

In a surprise move, Nomad moves a DD screening force NE of Truk and catches my CVs in a surface engagement :( It happened during the night and range got down to 2,000 yards but luckily the allied DDs must not have radar. They landed 3 hits on my two Yamato-class BBs and 1 hit on CVL Yedo inflicting minor damage. We only landed 2 hits on DD Ashley, but heavily damaged her and left her burning.

Two allied BBs (Mississippi and New Mexico) bombard Truk. Basically they exchanged fire with the Naval Fortress, neither side scoring any hits. Truk shouldn't be an easy nut for him to crack when he decides to attack. He will need to bring everything he has -- including the kitchen sink !!

Looks like the allied CVs pulled back south of Truk - not sure if its to load more SBDs or what, but they did not pursue my CVs - which were not spotted during the turn other than the surface fight.

South Pacific:
B-25s bomb my fragment at Howland Island inflicting some losses. Another day or two and my troops here will be gone.

Allied NavSearch or ASW planes located one of my subs and sunk her with a pair of hits :(

In good news I have received reports that the allied DDs that hit mines at Truk have all sunk !! So thats three more allied DDs gone. Nomad made an offhand comment the other day that he is short on escorts, so every DD or SC I kill is good news.
