Re: "An Albatross around my (bottle)neck" - LST vs Jansako (A)

Post by LargeSlowTarget »

March 27th, 1942

Highlights: KB damaged more tankers

Bases lost or won:
Long Island is occupied by the Japanese - NYC next?
Quang Ninh is occupied by the Allies

Allied ships sunk:
xAK Van Waerwyck is reported to have been sunk near Cocos Islands on Mar 27, 1942
CL Enterprise is reported to have been sunk near Pamekasan on Feb 04, 1942

Northern Area:
An enemy submarine has laid mines at Shikuka but local forces promptly detected and cleared them.

China / Korea / Manschukuo:
At Handan, a DA by a IJA Security division with tank support failed to dislodge the Chinese Corps which is holding open the door for the retreating East Coast garrison. More IJA forces are on the way to help slam the door shut.

PI:
Just the usual bombings and bombardments of besieged Manila. AA still heavy, I'm wondering where the supplies are coming from?
DD Oyashio in ARD Meyungs at Legaspi - that DD has been damaged in the first week of the war, made Legaspi with 80 major float damage and survived. I didn't want to risk a voyage to a repair yard with that damage level, so one of the very few ARDs got towed to Legaspi once the area was free of enemy air assets and the DDs has spent several weeks under repair. Currently at 30 major float damage and repairing a point almost every day, I think I will just leave him in the ARD to finish repairs.

Malaya/Burma:
The 3rd Thai Division at Hsi-hseng in Central Burma is in its death throes, with an adjusted defense of 1 this turn it is unlikely it will survive another attack.

DEI:
Minesweepers are busy clearing Soerabaja.
SS I-160 hits Mine VH Mk II at Merak - who gave those stupid orders to pass via Sunda Strait?!?
Japanese Ships Bombarding enemy troops at Samarinda - remnants of the Tarakan garrison retreating south have arrived at that base which only had a lone SNLF company as garrison. An emergency airlift of a Naval Guard unit and naval support helped defeat a desperate shock attack by the Dutch.
B-17s night-bombed Soerabaja and scored a runway hit.
KB operating near Cocos Island sank an xAK and damaged two tankers which most likely won't make it back to base.

Australia/PNG:
E13A1 Jake-Suitei sighting report: 5 Allied ships at 98,130 near Port Moresby , Speed 11 , Moving Northeast. Reinforcements for PM, but there is little I can do about it. Not enough air assets available to overwhelm enemy CAP at PM, but more subs have been shifted from the wide empty ocean between New Zealand, New Caledonia and Victoria up to Queensland.

Intel:
Previous report of sinking of CA Chester incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service.

Other remarks:
Low garrison leads to damage and 1 VP loss from partisan attack at Kaoping (89, 42)!
Low garrison leads to damage and 1 VP loss from partisan attack at Zhongxian (84, 47)!
Low garrison leads to damage and 1 VP loss from partisan attack at Ruichang (85, 52)!
Low garrison leads to damage and 1 VP loss from partisan attack at Sanming (84, 59)!
Each turn I lose VPs because bases flipped to Japanese control after the Chinese "Civil Administration" units which should prevent such flips died - either by starvation or because I left bombers on "commander discretion" by accident. These Admin units seem to be too brittle, I will give them a few more devices in the next mod update.

Re: "An Albatross around my (bottle)neck" - LST vs Jansako (A)

Post by JanSako »

Manila got besieged with over 100k tons of supplies so yeah, there is plenty still. There are only 2 AA units so it will be a while until they shoot it all out. Not hitting squat though, unfortunately... the enemy is flying at 20k+.

March 28th, 1942

Highlights: Gutsy Allies raid Hong Kong

Bases lost or won:
Wide Bay is occupied by the Japanese
Japanese forces CAPTURE Djokjakarta !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Nadzab !!!

Allied ships sunk:
xAP Tjitjalengka is reported to have been sunk near Madioen on Mar 28, 1942
HDML-1073 is reported to have been sunk near Cocos Islands on Mar 28, 1942
HDML-1080 is reported to have been sunk near Cocos Islands on Mar 28, 1942

Japanese ships sunk:
Loss of PB Iwate Maru #5 on Mar 28, 1942 is admitted
AKE Onoe Maru sinks at Soerabaja

China / Korea / Manschukuo:
P-40s on low naval attack have raided Hong Kong port, sinking a PB and destroying the lone Tojo on CAP present.
Chinese guerillas have crossed the Yellow River again to raid Guangshan and interrupt the road link between Nanking and Sinyang - but one of the newly-established "Security Divisions" has had advance warning of the move due to air recon and has sent a brigade to receive the unwanted visitors.

Malaya/Burma:
The 3rd Thai division survived another day.

DEI:
At Samarinda, two DDs peppered the exhausted Dutch attackers.
Several waves of Allied bombers have raided Soerabaja port at night, in violation of our house rules which limit the number of air units allowed for this kind of activity. One AKE sunk and several others damaged. A protest has been sent through diplomatic channels.
KB and SAGs operating off Java found some meagre pickings, and a SAG near Christmas Island got attacked by Albacores without effect. Christmas Island has a size 2 airbase and seems to be a "hard-point" for the Allies.

Australia/PNG:
Patrols have found good airbase terrain at Nadzab near Lae. However, it is difficult to send workers and construction materials to PNG in face of Allied air power at PM.

Re: "An Albatross around my (bottle)neck" - LST vs Jansako (A)

Post by LargeSlowTarget »

March 29th, 1942

Highlights: 8 Chinese Corps attacking Nanchang

Bases lost or won:
Quang Ninh is occupied by the Japanese

China / Korea / Manschukuo:
P-40s have interfered with our bombing attacks at Xinyu. Of course the Japanese sweepers flew last after the bombing raids and despite escorts we lost 8 planes against 2 Warhawks downed.
Despite the air attacks, the 8 Chinese Corps at Xinyu have crossed the river and shock-attacked Nanchang - but got bad odds and a hot reception. The defenders are way outnumbered - four brigades - and ground reinforcements are on their way but weeks from reaching the base. The river navy conducts daily bombardments under cover of LRCAP.

Malaya/Burma:
SS I-124* lays minefield near Rangoon ( 52 , 54) and sets course for Hiroshima/Kure+;
The 3rd Thai division has been destroyed at Hsi-hseng. That operation was a bad idea...

DEI:
B-17s have raided the oilfields at Tjepoe, obtaining one hit and losing a bomber to CAP.
A counter-attack at Samarinda has pushed the Dutch remnants out of the hex.

Summary for end of March - mid May 1942

Hi folks, long time no see. My opponent Jan is churning out turns so fast I can hardly catch my breath between them, let alone find the time to keep that AAR updated. Having a second albeit slower-paced game and AAR does not help either. The last update here saw the fall of Soerabaja at the end of March 1942. In the meantime, the game has reached May 15th. I have fallen far behind with this AAR and have been counting on my vacations to catch up, but it turned out that I have other things to do (the dreaded honey-dos). In short, I must cut corners, doing AAR updates day by day is too time-consuming.

The biggest news to report is the fall of Singapore on April 8th - finally! Apart from that I still got my @ss handed to me by my savagely aggressive and very able opponent, I am outgeneraled and outadmiraled and suffer from surprising Allied attacks, traps and all kind of mischief and nuisance raids on an almost daily basis. The best thing that can be said about my play is that I outblunder the enemy!

The economic situation is on the brink of collapsing because fuel is lacking for the industries and the shipping. Most HI factories have stopped producing due to lack of fuel. HI points stockpile is down to 33k and drastic measures have been imposed – all shipbuilding, vehicle and armament production stopped and only engine and fighter production still running. Feels like 1945! The refineries are all still working thanks to oil stockpiles, so it is the fuel consumption which is too high. However, I cannot reduce the number of resource convoys in order to save fuel because then the HI may have fuel to run but not enough resources. This is the effect of moving numerous resource centers out of the Home Islands to the CMK (China-Manchukuo-Korea) and SRA. The oil and fuel from Palembang and Magwe would be most welcome…

Alas, the Allies still have Manila, Palembang, Port Moresby and Rangoon, and given the forces arrayed by now for their defense, it appears unlikely that I will capture any of them anytime soon, or at all.

In the Northern Area, there is the usual submarine scourge around Sakhalin. Not so usual was a visit by carrier-based B-25s – the Doolittle Raiders - in late April which bombed the oil centers at Shikuka, destroying all 30 of them *grrrrr*. Note to myself – in the next game, send a base force and some CAP up north before April.

In China, the Kuomintang troops still launch the occasional nuisance attack against lightly defended bases on the LOCs, but the frontlines are less porous by now and two such attempts have been intercepted by reaction forces in time and sent back to where they came from with bloody noses. Nanchang is still under siege by 10 Chinese Corps but has been reinforced and should hold, helped by bombardments courtesy of the River Navy and air support. From time to time the Flying Tigers and /or Chinese bombers spring cap traps or low-level naval strikes, which forces me to keep fighters at Haiphong, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Hankow and Kaifeng – which means fighters assigned to the Southern operation must help-out in China. Surprisingly, the Chinese have evacuated Wenchow, leaving only a rear guard which folded on April 19th – the pressure of the equivalent of 4 IJA divisions which took some time to assemble for a second stab at Wenchow must have been too big.

At Manila, two IJA divisions maintain a blocking position to prevent the Allies from recapturing Clark Field. Apparently, the US and Philippine forces do not lack supplies at all, they have launched several counterattacks which have been beaten off with difficulties, causing an alarmingly high number of disabled squads in the defending units. An urgent call for reinforcements could only be answered by sending newly raised NLF and NG units to Luzon instead of other places on the thinly held perimeter. South of Manila a base has flipped back to the Allies, who quickly exploited the occasion to liberate southern Luzon down to Legaspi. In the process they liberated accumulated resources and resource centers, which now fuel the HI at Manila to generate even more supplies fo the Allies. Cebu has been taken, but a few islands holding substantial Allied garrisons remain to be reduced eventually.

In the SoPac, actions focus on PNG, the Allies are reinforcing and building-up PM and Netties and Zeros operating from Rabaul on anti-shipping strikes have impaled themselves on enemy CAP over that base. Three shattered Zero and Nettie units had to be sent back to Japan for rebuilding and training new pilots. Worse, the Allies have been hitting back with effective attacks by A-24s, SBDs and fighter-bombers on low naval attack and B-17s on port strikes. Several xAK, xAP and escorts got sunk. Even Rabaul got hit and a number of Minecraft and tenders sunk or damaged in port. Lacking adequate numbers of fighters and trained pilots to protect shipping and ports, the Japanese cannot operate anything larger than barges and the occasional single PB for the “heavy lifting” of motor support, searchlights etc. in the waters south of Truk. I am trying to build-up a string of barge staging points starting at Madang / Alexishafen and Cape Gloucester, but the Allies have responded with cruiser SAGs roaming the PNG coast, sinking barges left and right and bombarding the staging points. I have places mines, subs and midget subs in their paths but no luck, and the lone Betty unit left in the area managed one measly torpedo hit on a CA. On the ground, the Allied battalion of PNG Natives has recaptured Kokoda on April 19th and routed a SNLF Coy. The Bde at Buna is ordered to dig-in as fast and deep as possible and Engineer companies have been scrounged from the Kwantung Army to pitch-in.
In the Solomons, Guadalcanal is held by a reinforced brigade, Tulagi, the Shortlands and Buin each have a splinter of a NG unit. The situation is unlikely to improve, unless Combined Fleet can be relocated to these waters.

Combined Fleet however is busy in the DEI, supporting the operations against Sumatra and Java with bombardment runs, convoy cover and chasing the pesky RN. Medan has been under siege since early March by four Japanese units – 2 IJA Bns and 2 Naval Guard Bns - which had traversed Malakka Strait by barge. The RN has repeatedly bombarded the besieging Japanese troops. The fall of Singapore finally permitted to do something about this, and a sizeable part of Combined Fleet got ready to ambush the RN. In the last days of April and first days of May KB(-) clashed with enemy carriers and SAGs in a running battle between Sabang and a few hexes south of Colombo. HMS Formidable, HMS Royal Sovereign, HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Caradoc have been reported sunk, no losses on the Japanese side. One of the very few bright spots in an otherwise unimpressive Japanese early war performance up to now.

Medan fell April 4th, Batavia on April 17th, Sabang on April 29th. On Java, “Fortress Bandoeng” which holds the entire Dutch Java garrison – 20+ units with 30k+ troops and 800+ AV - is being besieged by 1.5 IJA divisions (600 AV), awaiting availability of reinforcements. In Southern Sumatra, recon counts 30+ units at “Fortress Palembang” - 45k troops, 600+ guns and 500+AFV. Free intel from my opponent confirms that there are 800 AV behind level-3 forts waiting. Lesser forces are at Oosthaven and Benkolen. Oosthaven has been selected as the entry point for the invasion of Southern Sumatra due to the proximity of Batavia for air cover and staging as well as resupply port for bombardment runs.

Air cover is really necessary because the enemy keeps P-39s, P-40s, Hurricanes, and older trash at Palembang and occasionally at Bandoeng, with a preference for low naval strikes and port attacks. I have Tojos, Lilies and Sallies at Singers which have conducted moderately effective raids against Palembang for some time, with the occasional screw-up in coordination which has resulted in heavy bomber losses when the escorts failed to show up and the sweepers launched last instead of going-in first (I must be cursed). However, supplies at Singers have fallen too low to allow the use of external fuel tanks on the Tojos, which puts Palembang out of range… There are Zeros and Netties at Batavia, but they are needed to keep an eye on suspicious enemy activities around Christmas Island.

Ground operations were and still are being hampered by the fact that the capture of Singapore was long-delayed and many IJA LCUs got hurt in the process, requiring a period of R&R. Supplies for rebuilding shattered units are not exactly abundant in the area, nor is fuel for extended fleet operations in support. Plus, I opted to convert the big, fast xAKs to “AK-t” types, which is the closest thing the Japanese will get that resembles an APA/AKA type, but the conversion takes a month.

Forces for the invasion of Southern Sumatra and the capture of Palembang finally started to assemble at Batavia at the beginning of May, preliminary landings captured Benkoelen on May 4th. However, this operation and the abundance of shipping assembled at Batavia has attracted the unwelcome attention of the Allies – not only the usual fighter-bomber low naval strikes and B-17 port raids, but also quite unexpectedly the USN carrier forces.

On May 7th, US carriers raided Batavia and beyond, sinking 8 of those precious big, fast and and freshly converted AK-t hulls in Batavia port – loaded with troops of course - and savaging a group of cruisers and destroyers which were retiring from Batavia to Singapore for fuel (there is none at Batavia) - cruisers Kumano and Ashigara went down under the weight of 1000-pounders dropped on their decks, other cruisers received damage. LBA also showed-up and raided ships stuck in portside repair mode at Batavia.

By that point I was in a state of utter despair – the catastrophic economic situation plus my opponent’s masterfully applied “fight back at every occasion” strategy had brought me to the brink of throwing the towel. But I decided to go out in a blaze of glory and sent all available forces out from Batavia and Singapore into the IO, chasing the Allied carriers. TFs got organised by speed and available fuel and thus “reach”. Batavia airbase got cramped with all available planes on naval strike as well. The following turns were very eventful – between May 8th and 13th various IJN surface and carrier TFs engaged various enemy surface and carrier TFs and even enemy merchant shipping - supplies for Palembang via Oosthaven ? Surviving reasonably healthy ships with ammo left recombined in order to pursue the enemy, cripples and ships low on ammo and fuel ordered to retreat. The highlights from the combat reports are below, organised by TFs and within each TF chronologically :

24 merchantmen

Probables:
CV Enterprise
CV Saratoga
BB Idaho
BB Ramillies~
CL Glasgow~
DD Sims
DD Bagley
4 merchantmen

The slugfest was not without costs, Allied carrier planes sank DD Hatsuharu, the surface actions have cost us DD Tanikaze, DD Isonami, DD Usugumo and TB Hatsukari.

I hope that this will infuse some caution on the Allied side for the coming months, while I will try to capture Palembang and see if I can get enough fuel and oil to recover the economic situation and keep going.

And this, folks is what happens if you push the opponent to the corner with no way out. And what one gets if one pokes the whole IJN with just one CV group and a few old BB's in May '42. :-) And it was, literally, ALL of IJN's major units being present in the area of operations. He might have a CL stashed in Truk or someplace, but surely nothing larger than that.

These weeks were some of the most fun I had in any game, like ever. And we are just getting started. Well, I do not have many carriers left to get started with, but Allied damage control being as good as it is, the score card above is not ...quite... as positive as my esteemed opponent would like it. It was a pretty thorough beating though, that is for sure!

We will be back with new shiny toys and some old patched up ones too!

Taking notes for my ongoing game.
Production is definite a challenge in this MOD compared to the standard game.
Only in mid January (slow pace) but like it a lot.

The game is still motoring on despite a hopeless economic situation of Japan - maybe "motoring" is not the right word, given the fuel shortage. The primary interest to continue the as-good-as-lost game is playtesting the mod and to discover glitches (just found a minor issue with sub upgrades) to be corrected in a final update.

We have reached mid-July 1942 and since the naval clash in early May, no major changes in the strategic shituation. The reason I decided to give an update is a new naval clash, see below.

The oil and fuel which flows from Medan and Borneo is not enough to keep the economy and the resource convoys running and to operate the fleet on a permanent basis - there is a bit of everything but on a hand-to-mouth basis. Only half the HI factories are producing, I have about 19k HI points left in the pools and that number is dropping each day. I have long stopped all shipbuilding and only produce fighter planes. Armament and vehicle factories had been turned off as well but with the pools nearly empty now, I need to make a choice to use the remaining HI points for the ground troops or the air forces.

I still have not succeeded in capturing neither Manila nor Palembang, Rangoon is an Allied fortress which defies my attempts to isolate it by air and submarine blockade, the Allies are slowly but surely increasing the pressure on Milne Bay and Buna, and in China it looks like the Japanese forces in the Yangtze valley will soon be steam-rolled by well-supplied Chinese hordes.

At Palembang, two Australian divisions plus Dutchmen hold behind level 4 forts. About 200 Helens and Sallies are bombing the base each day. A Japanese over-stacked deliberate attack with four IDs and lots of arty, tanks and Eng Rgt has failed with heavy losses, a dozen Eng Rgts gutted and in need to be rebuild before the next try. The balance of the unrestricted big units are engaged here. There are eight Japanese IDs on Sumatra, the four gutted ones rebuilding in the rear and four relatively fresh IDs awaiting the rebuilding of the engineer assets for the next try. I could send-in naval bombardments, but these will also destroy the oil and refineries so it is not really an option. One other IJA division maintains the siege of fortress Bandoeng. The footholds in Burma are being maintained by Thai troops.

In the PI, two divisions plus sundry naval garrison forces are barely enough to keep Northern Luzon under control and Manila under "siege" - but with southern Luzon retaken by the Allies, they have resource production to feed the LI. Furthermore, my opponent is sneaking-in single xAks with supplies through the very leaky eastern approaches between Japan and Saipan.

In China, it is calm in the North, but two dozen Chinese units are threatening Hankow, 11 units are threatening Wuchang, 10 units are besiege Nanchang - all this prevents me from sending reinforcements to Kiukiang where one weak IJA "Security Division" faces 9 Chinese units. With air support and naval bombardments I try to extract a price and delay the inevitable, but Nanchang will soon be cut-off from land communications and will then be besieged by 10+9 Chinese units. I can still resupply via the river, but I cannot pull-out the restricted troops if Chinese pressure should prove too much.

In the South, the Allies maintain air superiority over the PM area, their fighter-bombers and bombers have forced an end to barge operations and the bases between Madang and Milne Bay depend entirely on air drops and submarine supply runs - this is of course not a healthy situation in the long run. While IJN light infantry is holding Kokoda and Jaure and an IJA Bde backstops at Buna, a US ID is besieging the IJA 65th Bde at Milne Bay. With the eleven unrestricted IJA divisions busy in the SRA, there are no meaningful ground reinforcements available. US and Australian cruisers have been naval bombarding Milne Bay repeatedly. In order to ease the pressure a bit, I have sent two bombardment forces myself, one to bombard the US troops at Milne Bay and the other to bombard its the logistical base at Bona-Bona. One of the force promptly ran into an Allied cruiser SAG:

In the meantime, the stupid Betties at Rabaul attacked nimble DDs at PM instead of hunting crippled cruisers off Milne Bay...

But the IJN had a last card up the sleeve - the few fuelled and operational carriers. Akagi, Hiryu and Soryu made an end-around sprint from Rabaul into the Coral Sea. They had to fight-off B-17s on naval attack, downing 11 of the beasts, and managed to catch and sink CA Canberra, DD Vendetta and even a few minecraft at Cairns. The Half-KB will now rush back to port, hoping not to be intercepted by Allied carriers, cruisers or subs.

I have finally managed to capture Palembang on July 19. About 20% of the oil and refinery assets have been damaged in the process and about 190k oil and 89k fuel have been captured. This will ease the economic situation somewhat, but not substantially. In fact the fuel captured is not even enough to refuel all the merchant ships which have run dry in the meantime on the resource convoys. That point will be addressed in the next version of the mod.

Now, the capture of Palembang did not went without a glitch. The enemy troops have not surrendered but retreated straight west through a river hexside I failed to close. I did not see the necessity to do so since Palembang was supposed to be the last Dutch base on Sumatra - hence nowhere to go for the garrison but into captivity. Alas, I have overlooked one tiny dot base in the jungles of Northern Sumatra - Saparen Kaore on the future "Sumatra Death Railway" - which was still in Dutch possession, and despite being hundreds of miles away and the fact that all hexes around Palembang had been visited by Japanese units, the Palembang garrison managed to trace a supply path and retreated... Now, instead of shifting my ground forces to fortress Bandoeng and Manila, I need to give chase and probably lose another two weeks or more. To add insult to injury, that freaking dot base flipped to Japanese control the very next day!!! Mopping-up is also underway south of Padang, while the ex-Oosthaven garrison has finally been surrounded and destroyed in the swamps east of the port.

The other hot spots are central China and PNG. The fact that the Burma Road is open seems to be a real boost for the Chinese. There are three main concentrations of enemy troops creating trouble - Hankow and Nanchang are under siege, while at Kiukiang enemy troops are on the move with nothing available to oppose them. I am shifting the elements of the two first IJA Tank Divisions from Sumatra and Luzon to counter this threat. I have also sent all surviving IJN cruisers to Hankow, together with a bunch of AKEs. Yes, the Yangtze is open to shipping up to 15k tons displacement all the way from Shanghai to Hankow. Given the shortage of fuel, the cruisers at least can do something useful - bombarding the Chinese monster gaggles of troops - while not moving much and conserving fuel. In fact they are really needed to beef-up the hard-pressed IJA ground forces - here is an example of a night's bombardment work :

In PNG, the Allies are pushing inland from PM (current size air/port = 5/5). Kokoda and Jaure are seeing ground actions pitting two US regiments against two IJN SNLF and a Naval Guards unit - bigger units are too difficult to supply. Bona-Bona has been build-up to size 2/2 and supports a reinforced US Inf Div besieging the IJA 65th Bde at Milne Bay. For the moment we are holding, but supplies have been running thin at Milne and Buna, enemy subs and air power have prevented any supply efforts except transport subs, and something had to be done. My own air power is too weak for a battle of attrition over PM, so I did the next best thing - a nuclear bombardment of PM on July 21st, 1942 :

Apparently Allied naval search did not see this coming ? Anyway, bonus on the way back to Rabaul, the TF stumbled over a bunch of Allied DDs and PTs, sinking DD Arunta and a number of PTs.

In the meantime, destroyers and fast PBs have made Tokyo Express runs to bring a few thousand tons of supplies to the Buna area and Milne Bay.

Now I need to wait for the next fuel convoy to arrive - poor man's war !

FYI, Jansako and I have decided to end the game in September 1942 due to a combination of factors. On my side mainly the disastrous economic situation due to the late capture of vital bases like Manila, Singapore and esp. Palembang - thanks to the brilliant delaying tactics which my esteemed opponent has masterfully executed (although his aggressiveness sometimes backfired). Jansako realised he's too much of an JFB and would like to concentrate on his other game playing the Japanese side. We have carried on nonetheless for some time as an occasion to playtest my mod and we have found a couple of glitches to correct. The nail in the coffin has been an ill-directed Allied carrier raid against Palembang which provoked the ire of the Combined Fleet, resulting in the loss of Hornet and Wasp, leaving only Yorktown as the sole surviving USN carrier. Combined with a bleak ground situation for Japan - my failure to capture Rangoon and Port Moresby has triggered Allied counter-offensives in PNG, Burma and China - we finally decided to end the playtesting. I hope we may cross swords again at a later time with the updated version of my mod.

Can you tell us how your mod performed? Any problems in Burma/China and supply there due to those all small bases?

What are the main differences between stock and the Bottlenecks which affected your gameplay?

Hi, I'm playing this mod as the Japanese(see opponent Matthew AAR ) and I like a lot of the thinking behind it but it definite need a overhaul on some areas.
Special for Japan as keeping the factories going is a real challenge, and we are only at the beginning of March 42. (slow pace game)
So I would say a nice mod but very-very hard to play as the Japanese.
Just read LST's his notes on the changes , think its in the mod section without the need to download the mod itself.
Not sure if LST will continue to work on it or not.

I will add a few observations as well.
The main difference from stock as Allied is that you need to pay attention to your fuel, supply and RES levels. (Absolutely critical as Japan, of course).
For any Japanese operation, the supply expenditure should be the supreme consideration.

I pulled a ton of fuel out of Sumatra before he closed the route, but still run Australia out of fuel by May/June, as well as CT at some point. You just need so much more fuel because of the smaller ship capacity. In fact I was running most of my cargo ships at all times, sending RES to the US & UK, from the Caribbean & Cape Town. Even supply convoys CT-India would return loaded with RES. I was never low on supply but fixing the damaged industry (simulates the buildup) means it is important to pay attention to where Supply is produced & get it to where it is used.

I rather like the dot bases. China is definitely a beautiful mess and a great psychological battleground if you put the effort in as the Allied player. There are many many opportunities to bleed the Japanese small garrisons, but also for them to trap your raiders.

The dot bases (in addition to stacking limits) have one important effect on large scale operations. They limit the amount of supply that can be brought into the hex for the side that holds the base. This is not the case for the 'attacking side', because they are not affected by the 'throughput' nor base spoilage limits. But when you take the base, now you are the one low on supply.
What this means that Chinese will not be able to put a 3-4k stack into a mountain hex with a dot base & minor trail running through it.
This is not as much of an issue (it is also historical/realistic), because if you intend to defend someplace, you should invest in building up the base. Even building forts increases the supply throughput. You can usually fill it up to the stacking limit or close-ish, which since the stacking limit is also affecting the Japanese, means you can delay for a while or they risk burning way too much supply kicking you out.

This is also one of the key things to understand. Japan does not have enough supply & most likely throughput to create a 5-7 k AV deathstack & simply bully their way through the Ankang road and do all the other things they need to do.

We also play with the 'Combined Arms' house rule, meaning if more than one tank unit attacks, they need to be supported by INF in 1:1 ratio. This IMO works great, as you can do small scale tank attacks to sap the Chinese strength but you need to pay the price to actually take anything properly defended.

To sum it up, Bottlenecks really brings the logistics into the same level of importance as your tactical provess & skill in maneuvering (You just think the stock does!). To me it it brings such an authenticity to the game, based on reading all the various accounts of the war.

The Industry game is really hard for Japan. To me that was a plus too, very historical.

The later iterations (the one in my game vs Evoken) have some changes to the fuel generation, but you still cannot do 'slow pace' conquest here. You need the DEI resources & oil & you need the Magic highway to bring it all closer to home if you are going to expand the industry in any meaningful way. The shipping capacity is Japan's Achilles' heel. It is something like 200k RES/day that needs to be landed on the Home Islands, before you expand any HI.

LST is still working on the mod but that is as much as I know.

Interesting observations.
One of the differences seems to be that as Japanese need to drop resources at the place where its needed.
It does not work to drop all at for instance Fukuoka like in stock , at least in my game it's not moving to where i need it or not fast enough.
Meaning the bigger production centers run out of the required raw materials very fast if you don't direct your convoys to the specific ports.
Makes all a lot more challenging but more micro management as well.
