Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
@Ktonos --- Yes, I formally surrendered. It's clearly over. If you want to continue for fun, I'll fight the Pacific half. Leave the Germans in Europe. It's an awesome battle.
Yeah, I was my own worst enemy in this one. Was planning some sneaky transports in pre-Pearl Harbor Pacific. Only problem, I had no clue (and/or forgot) there's a no-sail-zone for the Allies (and Axis for that matter). Didn't have that white button toggle *on. Even more dumb, I wasn't reading the messages or checking readiness. Indian/British transports were slightly inside the Pacific Rim naval border. USA readiness dumped to 4%. USA didn't join war until December 1942, yep 1942. Even worse, USA had no income during that period, thus no units and no tech. Argggg. The Pacifists and Quakers were happy, but not the rest of the world.
Ktonos worked over Russia, getting them to surrender in early 1944, when I surrendered.
His Italians battles the British non-stop, East of Tobruk. Salute to the light green units, they held.
While the doom was happening to the Urals, few raids to France, were kicked out.
Even worse, the Luftwaffe held RAF to a stalemate, costing Churchill lots of MMPS.
Well played Ktonos, you played it well, no mistakes.
Ha! Now to the Pacific. This was a hodgepodge of mass war. Nothing like War in the Pacific! Yes, I had transports waiting to pounce before Pearl Harbor, which cost me the game, but I had lots of fun. The Allies (mostly Indians from India) snagged multiple ports. Then came the Aussies. The Philippines held on for a couple turns, then the Japanese took Philippines, then Allies took it back. There were Naval battles from Singapore, Legate Sea, near Taiwan, Hawaii, Truk, etc. Since the USA didn't have any tech, Yanks lost ships. On the flip side, the Japanese were getting punched in the face. Couple sneaky attacks, took Seoul (later lost), Hong Kong, Allies held half of Viet-fricking-Nam. The entire Pacific was a zoo without cages. Was fun.
I agree, could have continued just for the fun of the Pacific. But come on man, Germans were unstoppable. Russia gone, and Luftwaffe was tough.
Great game. My mistakes breaking the Pacific Rim boundary was my own. I also made the same mistake as Japanese against JackMack. This is how dumb I am. Been breaking this readiness rule for all my games! No wonder the Yanks are so emotional.
Hosted unknowingly. John has a long mustache. I see four. Mumchance is the candlestick. Stop, look and listen. Promise I'll send a postcard.

ELO game ended:
aquavita (Axis loss) vs. Pekkavilamoura (Allies win).
Allies landed in north Italy in '42 and went on through southern France and the Alps to Germany. Stalin's forces were already entering Poland so there were too many fronts for the Germans to defend. Berlin fell end '43.
Great game by aquavita, excellent return of turns. Rematch anytime!

Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
[WIN] ElvisJJonesRambo (Axis) vs firsteds (Allied) --- What a game! Excellent action. Allies surrender June 1945, because of morale. Allies had massive units, but lacked the will (Morale) to continue. The Russians conducted a massive offensive in Summer 1943. Germans, by some miracle, were able to push back, a true Battle of Kursk. The battle was of suppy and exploitation of units to cutoff *key supply by both sides. This was in East was made possible by the Americans conducted a brave paratroop rescue of Paris. At least 4 Air units between USA/UK were able to sneak grab the capital of France. Only problem, those soft paratroops received a mower of Tanks that were operanded to the most counter position.
Due to the taking of Paris in 1943, Russians were able to attack in tandem. AH was able to hold on. Meanwhile, huge battle in Middle East. Allies bribed Turkey, forcing the Axis to take Turkey, before the conversion. Parking Lot battle in Middle East. Allies had the troops, but morale was low Losing some battles/units, plus Japanese holding some Yankee Guam type islands wasn't help the people in the States desire to fight. British morale was the lowest.
Fun action.

JNaspirant axis defeats Pekkavilamoura allies 11/45 via surrender. Fun game with rematch starting. Allies conducted an ultra aggressive China campaign with Chinese attacking from first turn throughout game. Chinese ultimately liberated all of China. Axis did much better in west with Russia falling in 1944, axis spreading throughout middle east and all allied landings in Europe being defeated. Game ended with all three axis countries in control of their capital. Good match with timely turns.

Great game. Did everything to avoid Russia from falling but German attack was too strong, so end '44 it fell. Italy was one big fortress so tried a '43 Overlord which was thrown back.JNaspirant wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 1:29 pm JNaspirant axis defeats Pekkavilamoura allies 11/45 via surrender. In the Pacific US island hopping campaign went well and Chinese threw Japs out of China, so was hoping to take Japan out when atomic bombs fell into Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Osaka (!), but Japanese morale still was at 4 % so I gave up as there was no chance to win the war.
Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
Game ended with Axis win. Nothing special, Chinese acted very aggresively at begining, so did the Brits at Africa. On both cases, after their initial wins, the axis counter-attack caused heavy losses and led to a quick capture of Egypt & most of China. Game ended in early '44 with Germans/Italians & Japs invading India from both west and east. Very steady turnaround from Pekka, good rate of turns.New ELO game started:

Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
ELO ended Ktonos (Allies) defeats ElvisJJonesRambo (Axis).
Allied decisive victory on April 1947 (thats 1 turn before game end!)
Well, if I ever wished to see one game of mine in an AAR, it would be this. What a brutal and close match. Up until Summer 1945, I was dead certain I couldn't win this, and I continued solely because I could give a good fight in a couple of fronts. But I managed to pull the comeback, and I am very proud I did this against a cunning and competent opponent as Elvis.
The Germans made an early France invasion, followed by a slow but eventually successful Sea Lion. Took Egypt. Italians Dominated Ethiopia. There was a point where the UK had maybe one land unit on the map, then my Indian MVPs saved UK from collapse. Defended Iraq, and Kenya. US strat bombers managed to level Egypt and hold the Axis push.
Axis pulled a double Pearl Harbor /east coast attack on US navy when they dowed America, bashing its fleet to almost nonexistance. Later the Japs captured Pearl Harbor.
Fortunately, the Soviets held the line, far more than anticipated. None of the major USSR cities ever fell, and only Leningrad was threatened. Smolensk and Kiev changed hands I dont know how many times.
I attempted a two prong Britanny/Cornwall Overlord, liberating England, but failing miserably in France. Eventually though the US managed to liberated France, but even then... Even then, US morale was below 8% at a point, and even in 1946 I thought I couldnt win. I was refraining from making any attacks with US units if there was an expected casualty of even 1 str point. Just to conserve morale.
Final kill count was absolutely insane. Something north of 250 soviet land units killed. Most of UK fleet. The US ended the game with only one BB on the map.
Amazing brutal game. Up for a rematch anytime.

Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
Adding to that loss, as Axis vs Ktonos:
The game was absolutely insane. It came down to the last turn.
Allied morale was so low near the end.
German surrendered end of 1946. Yes, 1946.
Japan held Chuang King and all Tokyo, so I was gonna win that way.
Japan gets nuked with 6 turns remaining, but still held on, dishing out damage.
Allies were oh so close, in taking Chuang King, but Japan was gonna hold it.
Japan lost Iwo Jima with 2 turns left, which buckled their morale.
It was like Rocky II vs Apollo Creed, both knocked down and had to get up.
If it would have gone to the score card, Japan wins.
But it didn't.
2 turns left loss.
Highlights:
British went very heavy in North Africa and France.
Decided to teach the Allies a lesson, don't leave weak ports.
Went thru England with decent speed from Western Side, with Paratroops and AV transports.
Decided to bribe the Yugoslavians, yes, Yugo. They joined, was bribing them early.
Yugos, Romanians, Bulgarians, Hungarians battled Russia, from June 1941 into 1946.
The Britsh Navy was completely sunk. Never sank so many naval units, won't be repeated, impossible.
Held England, and Ireland into late 1944.
The war, was in the East. Leningrad, to Smolensk, to Dnieper.
Nothing but a ping-pong match of destruction.
The Back/Forth in the East felt like WW1 or Korean War.
Offensives, just kept getting countered, by both of sides.

[ELOs Ended]
ThunderLizard11 (Allies) [win] vs. Aquavita (Axis) [loss] - Decisive Allied Victory in June '44. Japan went down first, then Germany and Italy held out a few more months. Excellent turn return from Aquavita.
ThunderLizard11 (Allies) [win] vs. Rookey (Axis) [loss] - Allies win by default. Rookey ghosted with no moves for 45 days and no response to PMs. Would have been tough match as Axis made good progress in USSR and Middle East but still had not taken DEI by Dec '43 depressing Japan's MPPs. Rookey went heavy Kriegsmarine investment with 7 lvl 3 subs plying the North Atlantic waters. Allies started to effectively counter with heavy CVL and MB investments. Italy left undefended so would have been easy pickings for US/UK AVLs.

JNaspirant axis defeats Old Shane allies in 11/42 via surrender. Allies attempted a forward defense in Russia which was overrun by strong axis forces. Russia surrendered in 11/42 so not much reason for allies to continue. Very nice turn speed and interesting game.

[LOSS] ElvisJJonesRambo (Allies) vs Archmache (Axis) --- This one was complete waste of time.
Russians have Level 1, Infantry. With only 35% done with 65% to go for Level 2. It's October 1941. Level 1 infantry are worthless.
Surrender. Too bad, game was exciting in rest of parts.

[WIN] ElvisJJonesRambo (Axis) vs gadjan (Allies) --- Russians held until 1944. Western Allies failed to make solid landing in time. Germans had crazy amount of MMPs from quick conquest of Turkey & Middle East. Subs went super level 5 + 3 stars from pirate work. Germany had so many MMPs, picked off Swiss, Greece, Spain, etc.
Long wars in Iraq, Norway. British grew tired of the death and the people (morale) caused them to Churchill to surrender in 1946

Gadjan (ELO Name Allor) Allies LOSS vs ElvisJonesRambo Axis WIN
Fun game. Many mistakes made by me as UK. Russia took the brunt of Germany's wrath but did manage to hold on until late 1945. Blood bath in pacific as IJN and USN with some RN support duked it out. US Marines island hopped their way from Marshall islands, Solomons, New Guinea, DEI, Luzon and the blood bath at Truk. India battled hard and retook, Burma, Thailand, Malaya and South Vietnam before mega panzers rolled into Afghanistan.
Please note my in game name is GadJan, ELO name is Allor.

Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
GadJan, aka Allor.
Yeah, the Pacific War had great action. Japanese were going broke from the endless Air Battles. The Face-2-Face Sea/Air battles was two heavyweights slugging it out The Pacific Rim shrunk, you were into Hanoi, Viet-fricking-Nam. Rambo had entered the arena. The Lone Panzer was a nice touch, well gift, to aid the Rising Sun to smash thru couple Northern Chinese *key cities. Would call this front, a draw.
The Russians, played well, extremely well. Cannot believe the pounding they took. I'd give that round, to the Reds.
Agree, the UK, were the ones to blow-it. Norway adventures were to my advantage. Axis had better supply, coming in from neighboring supply Finland. Allowed me to protect Axis Airpower and have 5+ ground strength, including the pesky Armored Train.
Wanna say, I was able to get Turkey, well, really force to take Turkey, since your Diplo Agents had them bribed. Afrika Corp was in Syria, and was able to surprise the Turks, just in nick of time. I was lucky there. The timing allowed easy conversion, and I didn't have a choice. This aided to the massive amount of income with later Middle East Oil and punching power into Southern Egypt. Was a tough spot for Monty.
Royal Navy was too cautious, you allowed the U-boats to swim around the planet too much, that had to cost. Racked up many badges for AH to handout.
1943, I was really weak in couple areas, a British Invasion (like the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who) would have taken Elvis down.
Iraq war was a stalemate. Too many caves and narrow passes for offensives. Air battle crazy.

Re: The World at War ELO Tournament
[WIN] ElvisJJonesRambo (Allies) vs JNaspirant (Axis) --- Axis surrenders Spring 1943. Italians played Africa quite soft. This allowed the Royal Air Force to stay healthy for couple years, and prepped for a huge Operation Husky in March 1943 combined with the Yankees and Canadians. Considered some other options, but wanted to make sure the landing would win. Russians were pushed back to Moscow and lost Stalingrad. Reds also lost Southern Russian Oil, and retreated to Persia. This front Allies were do slightly better than par. Germans still had alot of firepower, but were not happy with muddy terrain in the East. I was quite happy with the bad weather.
The real difference was in the Pacific. Due to the soft play by Italians, the Royal Navy got to counter-attack quickly after Pearl Harbor. My opponent got a taste surface ships acting more Japanese than Japanese. The Rising Sun had to pack it back to their island and possessions. This gave India some nice landing spots to invade. Though going slow, the DEI, Manilla, were receving double-supply pressure, was matter of few turns, toast.
Good game, good opponent. Will play anytime, either side.
