This turn we had a real showdown!

I sent in 3 surface tf's - Tanaka and the most able of my commanders. They surprised the Allied ships twice, torpedoed a battleship, sank a heavy cruiers, damaged 3 others and sank around 10 DD's + some APD's and MSW's.
That must put the total to 70+ DD's sunk!!!

My own damage was moderate, I might loose some ships on the voyage home though. A little dissappointed that I didn't hit more of the landing ships, but nevertheless I'm pleased with todays performance.

Thunderstorms prevented most of the air ops - but a few strikes from my carriers demolished a FT tf!

The Allied CV tf was in the Irau hex providing close support, Crocky was lucky that my cruisers didn't get at them.
CVL Princeton has also been identified now.

Next turn will be interesting, the rain is gone - overcast now.
Will Crocky send his cv's in on a sweep to blunt my remaining asset?
The alternative is to reorganize the damaged ships and continue the landings and pray that I've shot my bolt.

Retreating, nah don't think so!

Yep, it's a fact - Crocky is retiring from Irau for the second time!
My surface fleets found only LCVP's to kill this turn while my Betties hammered a few AK's and SC's.
(It's incredible how some of the latter manages to get hit by 2 Long Lance torps before dissappearing:p)

There was a really big air attack on the US carriers today, over 120 US fighters defended it including
Corsairs and Lightnings. I did expect this, but had to try since I don't want the Allies to as little
naval air power as possible.

The defending force consisted of the CV Victorious, 2 CVL's and 3 CVE's.
My attacking force consisted of the entire Kido Butai including

Kaga
Akagi
Zuikaku
Hiryu
Soryu
Hiyu
Zuiho
Ryujo

+ 3 seaplane carriers

I had even put in an CVE to boost maximum ac to 500 + 70 seaplanes.

Losses were horrendous but all respect to my Zeros which fought an inspired
battle and brought down 46 US Fighters.

For the price of 150 Val's and Kate's + 50 Zeroes + another 50 bombers lost
to flak, I managed to disable 3 CVE's. A kind of mini Marianas Turkey blast....

Hm, had a few near misses on both the Victorious and Princeton - that would have
made my day. Lost more than I wished for here, but I take comfort in the fact that
the Victorious and 2 CVL's is hardly enough to cover much of an invasion fleet.

My naval air arm has been blunted as an offensive power for the time being,
I got the planes to replace almost all the losses - but I have to disband existing
dive bomber sqd's to do so. It will take a few months, but I'll be ready again the next
time the Crock arrives at Irau [8D]

It's a little easier to accept such devastating losses as long as the battle is won.
Anyone that tries to attack US carriers tf's protected by BB's, CA's and CLAA's covered
by Wildcats and Corsairs in 43-44, knows that it's a very dangerous business.

My troops on Irau kicked out one US regiment, 2 others are awaiting their destiny.
So I guess someone will have to FT them out of KiraKiri..if there's enough APD's and DD's that is [:D]
I'll order Tanaka to watch the beaches!

Little action compared to last turn, a lot of Allied shipping around.
It's a little disheartening that I can't put my bombers on naval attack.
I can't risk them attacking sub chasers and other low value targets.

My last operational PC's were lost this turn, after evading several
subs they were torpedoed by pt boats. I've been hard to my low end assets,
and now I'll miss em.

Lots of action today!

The skies above Irau and Kiri is filled with fighters and bombers.
Again my Zeros performs well against superior formations of Lightnings,
and my transports are mostly allowed to unload.

If the US marines on San Cristobal are to be saved, a substantial effort will
have to be made. I'm not letting them go without a fight!

As promised, Tanaka fends of PT boat attacks sinking 6 of them for the cost
of 1 torp hits to a cruiser.

My last remaining battleship in theater went to Nevea together with quite a few
others to disrupt enemy shipping. A few SC's + 3 tankers are sunk. Not great,
but ok.

Lack of CAP over Lunga gives Allied bombers the chance to bomb my cripples,
the Maya withstands the ordeal but the severely damaged Oyodo succumbs to
her wounds and several bomb hits. Thus far the fighting has cost me only 1 DD
and one CL sunk.

A bad turn for Japan! Crocky strips his carrier escort, digs up 5!! battleships
and sends the whole remaining shebang to Kira. Tanaka is severely outnumbered and
most of the long lance torpedoes miss their mark. The entire tf numbering 11 ships
is devastated and only a few will make it back to port.

Tanaka survived on a raft though [;)]

100's of enemy bombers strikes everything from barges, transports and crippled
warships. My 2 transport tf's unloaded their supplies and troops though, the smallest
got bombed to pieces but the large one consisting of 8 AP's got out.

I will have to get rid of the American on San Cristobal asap as this is getting
expensive.

Was afraid that Crocky's BB's were part of a renewed effort and sent in my own big guys.
They didn't find anything - but a poor DD loaded with troops. #73 to go down the wash.....

My carriers have been ordered to stay, I can't leave the area to the vultures - then Irau will fall.
Their remaining potential became clear this turn when several strikes, the biggest one with more than
100 bombers, hit a few AK's and PT's. Poor picking for such a force. Gawd I hope they fix this in WitP.

Ground assaults on San Cristobal fails to dislodge the Americans, but at least I know their strength.

Subs are getting greedy, guess there are dozens around....(

Seemingly a stalemate right now, like two punchdrunk boxers
not strong enough to put an endt to the miseries!

We're into June now, still almost 7 months to go. I'm still ca 5500
points ahead, and Crocky must take Lunga to get anywhere near even,
so I guess I have to stick in and see how long I can hold the tide back.

John pretty much right we are both fighting each other to exhaustion here .... time is ticking and the Allies need to take Irau soon if Im to get close
beside I aint abandoning my Marines to his tender mercies
Managing to keep my bombers fling B17 B24s most days by using only 4-5 squadrons each day thereby bomb 1 day 2 days rest it seems to work

My lack of carriers is a pain otherwise I would be going straight at his [:(]

I actually got a cunning plan to counter some of the threat from the B17/24's - Mike will find out soon enough [;)]

Put some of my Vals on naval attack, and they got a damaged AK - then they launched a strike at shipping at Nevea [:@]
I MISS the option of telling my Admirals obvious things like; Do NOT commit suicide and attack targets where 150 figthers
are known to live!

I find it amazing that my worn down, outnumbered, outclassed and not to experienced
Zeroes managed to shoot down 23 P38's and damage another 23! This is a 29/53 or a 1-1.8 ratio,
not bad for mid 43 really. Didn't loose too many Vals fortunately, 24 got through and couldn't
hit the slow moving AK's the Zeroes had sacrificed so much for them to get at.

More sub attacks...my DD's havn't sunk one in a long time now.
Dislodged the last 2 USMC regiments from Irau, means that it will be
more difficult to get them all out of KiraKira, but at least that's one less
concern.

Bad weather this turn and most Allied planes were kept on the ground
to regain strength.

PT boats moved out to where Mike thought my cv's would be, but found
nothing but ocean.

Mike is a man of his word, a fast transport TF covered by a surface tf is heading towards Irau/KiraKira.
His slender CV force is sent out to engage my cv's - it's mostly a decoy to get my naval bombers to
destroy themselves against heavy CAP and flak. The avengers that attack are almost destroyed to the last
plane.

My newly arrived Sally's and escorts are mauled by heavy P38 LRCAP though. My cv's does not launch strikes,
I've ordered the bombers to stay down until I got something worthwhile to attack.

I'm cursed - I'm being torpedoed and running into my own mines. BB Kirishima hit a mine today, but at least
a sub is destroyed. Billfish is depth charges and sinks, SS Swordfish is reported hit by a Betty on ASW.

Transports at Lunga are hit by bombers but the ones attacking my warships didn't fare so well.

Both sides looses 30-40 ac today, 10 of mine from op losses...(

Not sure whether the Allied ships are bringing troops or picking them up, guess we'll see shortly.
Seems like I have to keep a large number of troops in both KiriKiri/Irau to prevent a US base
from growing up here.

The Allied ships spotted off Irau yesterday goes to KiriKiri, even the carriers
are providing close support.

As I knew they were coming, I sent Tanaka in with a surface tf. He didn't perform
as well as I hoped, and most of my ships receive medium/heavy damage. I immediately loose 2 destroyers
while more will sink on their way home - especially those pounded by scores of Allied bombers.

The Allied ships doesn't get away without damage though, CL Santa Fe is torpedoed by a sub and heavily
damaged. CL Birmingham sinks, so does 2 DD's and an APD should follow quickly.

For the first time the Allies take 11 op losses in a single turn, and both sides lost 33 ac today.

Currently I'm not strong enough to boot the marines off KiriKiri, but before they can march on Irau, they
will have to push my 12k+ troops back. Hopefully this will take time......

I have to talk with HQ in Tokyo, the Yamato and Musashi could have done what they were made to do if
I had them now. The modern US battleships are more than a match for my heavy cruisers.

Less action this turn, two of my cripples sinks after further
air attacks - a DD + a CL.

My bombardment attack reveals 16000 US troops at KiraKira now.
Among these there are the 2 Marine Rgt's that I kicked out of Irau.
2 eng units, a coastal defense bat, a para rgt and 3 Marine raider bat's.

My 12000 can't do much to kick this bunch out, especially as the forts
are coming up quickly. So I'll do my best to disrupt further reinforcements
and supply runs.

A few quiet turns now, but today the US tf's were back with troops and supplies for KiraKira.
I-7 makes my day and put 2 torps into the South Dakota! Oh yeah, report said heavy and critical
damage after the torp strikes, so I only hope she has to go back to Pearl.

Could be one less menace to worry about. The battleships are the most formidable weapon
in the Allied arsenal right now. Without them troops and supplies could not have been brought in.

Loads of Allied ships at KiraKira...a few Lily bombers shred themselves against
the heavy anti aircraft fire put up by the capital ships.

Tony's and Ki-43II's ain't performing to bad - they've been training for months
and got 65 avg exp. Gives my Zeros a chance to catch their breath.

As you might have guessed, I've based planes at Lunga again. The place is fulled
up with flak guns and engineers. If Mike wishes to close it, he will have to sacrifice
quite a bit of his bomber strength to do so.

Didn't see any retiring battleship this turn, with my luck the big crate
didn't suffer any serious damage at all!
