I really appreciate all the good ideas and answers to questions. I suspect I'm not the only one learning from this AAR. You guys are making this game a lot more enjoyable and I thank you all.

There's a Jap CVTF moving SW just east of Balikpapan and I have some support ships at Soerabaja that I don't want to get sunk so I'm evacuating them down to AUS. I may have waited too long and they may not get away.

AGs are pretty much limited to assisting in the repair of "small escort" and "small craft" only:

Thank you for the links.

The Japs are making their way down to Singapore slowly but steadily. I think my guys at Georgetown and Kuantan are just trapped behind enemy lines.

TF466 is trying to make the port of Soerbaja but that Jap TF is too close to permit it. That Jap TF has a CV in it so I doubt that TF466 is going to last much longer.

Yesterday my TF541 was sitting at Ternate and a Jap landing force arrived to invade and we had a surface engagement and I sank a lot of Jap ships:

Day Time Surface Combat, near Ternate at 78,102, Range 16,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
APD Fuji, Shell hits 7, heavy fires, heavy damage
APD Hagi, Shell hits 6, on fire, heavy damage
xAK Syoka Maru, Shell hits 21, and is sunk
xAK Rokko Maru, Shell hits 10, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Santos Maru, Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
xAK Igasa Maru, Shell hits 11, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Nansin Maru, Shell hits 34, and is sunk
xAK Ryugi Maru, Shell hits 8, heavy fires
xAK Sanuki Maru, Shell hits 7, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
xAK Taibun Maru, Shell hits 2, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
xAK Ume Maru, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
xAK Yuzan Maru, Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk

Allied Ships
DD Alden
DD Pillsbury
DD Van Nes, Shell hits 1
DD Scout
DD Stronghold

So now my ships are damaged and I feel like I need to fix them. I'm not sure I can find a shipyard that's available. Jap TF's are too close to Java to make it safe to sail that direction. Maybe Darwin?

TF367 is a small TF containing an AS and it's DD escort. They are headed for Canton Island and they have 34 more hexes to go. That's not quite two weeks yet I'm guessing. I'm hoping there's no drama on the way.

There's a lot of Allied boat traffic among the smaller islands SW of Pearl. TF121 has a fragment of an LCU that's made up of motorized equipment and that can't unload at the port where the rest of the unit unloaded. It's going back to Pearl where it'll be safe until the port is big enough to handle motorized equipment. Maybe a port level of 2 or more?

Given their location the closest (and safest) nearby shipyard outside of Java would be at Perth in southwestern Australia. Although it's very small it should be able to handle a Dutch destroyer. If you have no major damage to repair, then Darwin would probably do.

Here's what's been going on in the PI. The Japs have been attacking at Manila and Clark Field every day for about a week now. These results are typical of what's been happening for about a week now.

The Japs landed at Tandjoergselor last night and it's unoccupied so they will own it this time tomorrow. There's not a lot of stuff there so it's not a crisis.

AGs are pretty much limited to assisting in the repair of "small escort" and "small craft" only:
AG abilities..jpg
I find the main use for AGs is replenishing the depth charges (DCs) on small escort ships early in the game. There are so many small ports that cannot handle DCs and the early game escorts have so few on board that they run out after a couple of DC attacks. Very frustrating to have an escort detect a sub but be unable to attack. Scatter AGs at numerous ports along the shipping routes, and remember to get them replenished with supply when they have been busy.

If the Japanese have Tarawa and an airfield 2, they can send out Betties and Nells over 20 hexes. You may need to waypoint that TF further south to be safe. To check, set the TF routing Threat Tolerance to low and see what that does to the routing. If it veers south, there is a danger in that area. Reset the Threat Tolerance and reroute the TF. Better late arriving than never!

PS - nice strike at Ternate!

Instead of waiting for a Level 2 port to be built, you can load support vehicles on a smaller ship (under 6000 tons displacement) that can dock at a level 1 port. Alternately, load them amphibiously and offload them without docking. A Port Service Detachment is very helpful at small ports.

This is typical of the AI 'planning'. It sends in units that are too weak for the job and they lose a lot in their shock attacks. But they have supply and lots of artillery so they will grind your defence down when other weak units join the first one. Be happy with buying time - that limits how far south and east the Japanese can go.

This is typical of the AI 'planning'. It sends in units that are too weak for the job and they lose a lot in their shock attacks. But they have supply and lots of artillery so they will grind your defence down when other weak units join the first one. Be happy with buying time - that limits how far south and east the Japanese can go.
Yeah, it's sort of the AI equivalent of a probing attack (with suicide troops).

Except that the AI does not then calculate just how much more in firepower and what type of firepower is needed and the AI will continue to attack with insufficient forces.
