Gamerdude's tournament final - Moongaz3r (Entente) vs Fafnir (CP). Match 1/2.

Post by Moongaz3r »

I decided to write an AAR of the final match of the tournament organized by gamerdude (big shout-out to him for that!). After all, it's not every day you get to participate in such an event. I had heard about Fafnir and his fearsome reputation even before the game, and we even faced each other in the group stage (probably the most difficult match I've ever played in SC, which I somehow managed to win!). In any case, I have no illusions about how difficult this game will be (and, looking ahead, this seems like an understatement).

The game is played in a mirror format, with me playing for the Entente and Fafnir playing for the CP. The final score will be determined by points after the end of the second game.

T1-4 (August 1914)

The first moves for the Entente have always been reactive in principle. The Central Powers start with a large number of units, a tech advantage (not looking at you, Austria), and a morale bonus for the capture of Luxembourg and Belgium. All I have to do is determine the direction of the main attack and try to adjust accordingly.

Fafnir's opening was almost the same as in our last game - the capture of Belgrade on the first turn, the deployment of the Second AH army against Serbia, and a very conservative Schlieffen aimed at Belgium rather than Paris. Last time, I responded with a lightning capture of Thorn and Breslau, which ultimately threw the entire Central Powers' defense into confusion and allowed me to break through to Bohemia and Hungary by the end of the year. Now, judging by the location of the troops and the lack of active advancement in the west, I suspect that he is ready for this kind of tricks.

Image

One glance at Serbia is enough to understand that they will last until the end of the year at most. The decision on whether to send French troops there must be made right now - later it will be too late. I ultimately decide not to do so for several reasons:
- spending too much on transports when I desperately need them for techs
- only one inconveniently located port (and Albania won't enter the war for another two months)
- he may still change his mind and focus on France

Image

In response, I start up the Russian steamroller and send it to Galicia. The plan is to capture all NM locations in Galicia by the end of the year. Hopefully hold them as well. After reconnaissance, I decide to strike Krakow first and send the cavalry ahead. The die is cast.

Image

As expected, the German fleet appears in the Baltic.

September-October 1914

Belgium fell on the third turn, I decided not to evacuate its forces, better to stall the Germans for now. It looks like the frontline will be established on Amiens-Reims-Verdun line, unless he tries to push again.

Image

Serbia is collapsing rapidly, now I am not even sure that they can make it till the New Year. Trying to buy time as much as I can, Serbs even manage to trade evenly, which is good.

Image

Germans immediately react in the East by starting a counter-offensive but Krakow still falls. I rush forward with cavalry but mostly to force him to stretch. Next turn the Germans immediately deploy 4 (!) corps to the Eastern Galicia. This doesn't scare me (not at all!) and I push around Lemberg, surrounding it. So far so good, Austrians take a heavy beating.

Image

France invests in techs, the UK income is drained by timed modifiers and convoys to Russia, Russia spends everything on reinforcements and operational movement. I need to force the CP back into the Carpathians before winter.

Hi Moongaz3r - it is great that you and Fafnir have agreed to post this AAR of your epic tournament final matches. Thank you going this extra mile to inform the rest of us!

I am amazed at how fast Serbia seems to be falling. In my past games, the Serbs can usually hold a line between Pec and Nish at least until the spring of 1915. Did you deliberately abandon Nish in order to conserve your forces?

On the other hand, it is equally impressive how quickly Russia has been able to take Krakow and Lemberg - even with the AH 2nd Army sent to deal with Serbia. Did Fafnir not try to defends these resources?

If you could provide a turn date for all of your screen-shots that would be really helpful to enable your readers to follow what is happening. Periodic updates on the losses and NM levels on both sides would also be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi, Michael, and thank you!

I abandoned Nish because he could have just cut it off and push towards Uskub. At that time I had nothing there. I decided that I would have a better chance to stall him in the mountains.
Serbia can fall really fast if the CP gain momentum. They start understrengthed and their forces arrive in batches, so it is quite possible to just roll over them with skill and sufficient forces.

In Galicia, Fafnir did deploy the Austrians at resources, I simply overran most of them. Though I think it was part of the plan anyway, since (going ahead a little bit) I won't be able to hold them for long.

Since we've played around 30 turns in just three days, it is a little hard for me to organize my thoughts :D
I'll try to provide more context as we go forward.

November 1914 - December 1914

Both Montenegro and Albania surrendered but Serbs actually managed to hold till the New Year. Still, their fate is sealed.

Image

In the west Fafnir used his own snowy turn to detrench the corps at Verdun. Doesn't look like he is going to take it though, not without artillery. The general situation here is rather quiet: Germans occasionally attack the bulges, like the one at Reims but the frontline doesn't move.

Image

Can't say the same about the Eastern front. I've always like the opening turns here - a careful and precise dance of feints and strikes between two swordsmen. Well, now my opponent has a freaking sledgehammer instead of rapier, so I have to pull back. Krakow falls, so does Lodz. However, I manage to conduct a successful frontal assault against Przemysl and take it. 3 out of 4 Austrian NM hexes were captured during this campaign. I guess I can call it a partial success.

January-April 1915

The defeat of Serbia and Ottoman entrance into the war allowed AH to bounce back from some of the NM losses during 1914, climbing from 71% to 79%. Germany seats at 101% - and that's really dangerous. I am confident that Fafnir will take both Verdun and Warsaw in the next year, and at this rate it will bring him over 110%, granting a morale boost to all German and Bulgarian troops. If it happens - I am done. So I need to prevent it by making Germans bleed.

Winter on the Western front was relatively quiet. I had to pull back from Amiens because the losses were getting too much. Fafnir doesn't follow.

Image
Image

In the East Germans approach Warsaw. Fafnir is bold enough to move without entrenching, I kill a couple of his corps for that.

Image

Ottomans are on the offensive in Sinai. Since railroad connection is established, Fafnir can easily bring German or Austrian artillery to support it, I have to be careful. Most likely I will have to cross Suez.

Image

Considering the situation, Mesopotamian campaign is just an afterthought. Let Turks waste time on this.

May-June 1915

Warsaw is lost - a pincer attack both claims the city and cut off the defenders of Novogeorgievsk from the rest of the army. German NM jumps to 104% - looks like he won't be getting to 110% after all, unless Germany sinks some ships. Losses are high but acceptable, for now.

Image

Scout patrol reveals the German lvl 1 artillery in the vicinity of Verdun. Not much I can do here - French will only be getting lvl 1 arty on the next turn.

Image

Italy finally joins the party. And here is a bad (but expected) surprise - looks like Fafnir prepares a big knock out blow for them. Defending on the border against Bulgarians with 120% morale is pointless - I pull back and rail in the French troops. Unlike Italians, they have lvl 2 entrechment tech, so I will put them to the frontlines for now, while Italy is doing catching up. I also position the bombers across the Adriatic - maybe I can harass some of his ships there.

July 1915

As expected, Verdun falls. German NM jumps to 106% - looks like it will be the peak. Killing a corps in Reims is a poor retaliation but I simply can't do anything - German troops have 110%+ readiness and attacking them even with artillery results in even exchanges. I need to farm exp for my HQs somewhere asap.

Image

I prepare the killing ground Amiens, where German lines are thinnest and terrain is flat. Hopefully I will finally get favorable results there.

Image

Russians slowly retreat back. I position my forces in two rows: once the front line starts looking insecure, the forward troops simply hop behind the second line. This keeps the trench lines at their max level. The only enemy I can fight here are Austro-Hungarians, Germans are too tough. And Fafnir mostly keeps them in a backline. At least I finally got Artillery 1, maybe now I can pinch him a little bit.

Image

On the next turn Germans push right through fully entrenched Ivangorod without even "hugging" it from two sides, both taking the fortress and damaging Russian HQ in Lublin. I bite my lip and fall back again. Frontline around Lemberg remains static.

Image

Austrians and Bulgarians take Udine, Germans try to punch through north of Verona but drop that idea once they spot the French. We hold the line for now. I drop the idea of attacking ports once I spot that the morale of AH ships is in yellow. Looks like he reinforced them.

Image

The next turn AH artillery finally roars, one of the defending French corps is dead. I retaliate by destroying Bulgarians hanging around the mountains without supply and Austrians south of Padua.

August 1915

Watching replays of endless beating and losing on all fronts caused my nerves to get the better of me. Instead of playing cautiously I decide to try something daring. While the Germans push French troops back in Burgundy, British marines land at Boulogne and I punch through the German lines near Lille, capturing it in the process. One German corps is surrounded and city is liberated. I hold no illusions - I will lose the city next turn, Germans are just too damn strong. But at least I get some French NM back and cause confusion in the defending lines.

Image

As expected, next turn is all carnage and death. Germans fly in like vultures, recapturing Lille and establishing connection with surrounded corps, at the same time continuing their slow grind in the south. I punch through the lines again, opening up the way for cavalry back behind Entente lines. Which are getting dangerously thin.

Image

On the Eastern front, I am more cautious, trying to pick advantegous fights. Finally, I get the first exp pip on my HQs.

Image

Next turn Fafnir destroys the defenders of Lemberg but doesn't dig in there, spotting the artillery behind the lines. City remains unoccupied. Russians pull back yet again, abandoning Lublin.

Image

On Italian front Padua has fallen. I recapture it and manage to score one hit on artillery. The lines here are getting thin as well...

Image

Next turn - Padua falls again. This time I simply don't have enough reserves to counterattack.

Image

British army is forced behind the Suez strait. One of my corps is dead - courtesy of Austrian artillery. A little more - and Fafnir will enter Egypt in force. I have to stop him here.

Since the war is going for one full year, time for some stats.

NATIONAL MORALE
UK - 92%
France - 66%
Russia - 66%
Italy - 91%
Germany - 98%
Austria-Hungary - 89%
Ottomans - 88%

LOSSES
Image

INCOME
UK - 4054
France - 4692
Russia - 5715
Italy - (lost screenshot :( but they've just entered the war, so it's not much, propably around 500)
Total - 14461 (15000~)

Germany - 8814
Austria-Hungary - 4897
Ottomans - 2962
Total - 16673

LOST (UNITS)
UK - 2802
France - 4080
Russia - 8317
Italy - lost as well, it was around 800
Serbia - around 2000
Total - 15199 (18000~)

Germany - 8793
Austria-Hungary - 5423
Ottomans - 1866
Total - 16082

Despite losses being relatively even, I continiously lose NM unlike Fafnir. I feel like a frog being preped by med student - slowly and metodically :D
The problem is that I simply cannot seize initiative anywhere. And this is not SC WWII - the CP's income is even with Entente's, at least till the very last part of the match. To stop this steamroller, I need an opening. To get an opening - I need him to make mistakes. And he simply does not make them. But I am patient, so I soldier on further.

September 1915

I have no choice - I have to fall back in Burgundy. I have a big batch of corps dropping during the autumn, just have to hold on till then. Also I use an opportunity and snipe German detachment north of Amiens. Finally, Foch gets his first exp pip.

Image

However, my biggest concern is Paris, since it is a victory condition unlike Dijon. So for now I keep my artillery there.

Image

Eastern front remains static because Germany finally got Infantry Weapons 1. A very dangerous situation, mine research is lagging behind both due to the lack of breakthroughs and to my prioritization of artillery on the first turns.

Image

I try to use this temporary break to my advantage. Russians force Austrians to retreat and manage to get to the back lines, damaging artillery piece. Yudenich gets the second exp pip. Now that's good news!

Image

In the Med, I devise a plan to save Egypt. First, I assemble a fleet and strike Antalya, reducing its supply and cutting the railway connection to Palestine, so supplying Turkish troops would be much harder. Then I bring an Italian HQ and additional detachment. Now I have some reserves at the very least.

Image

Turks try to push, killing one detachment but suffering big losses from artillery fire. I respond by destroying the corps which was left in avantgarde. German and Austrian subs try to harass my fleet, well, I harass them back.

Image

German fleet appears in the Gulf of Finland again, this time with upgraded subs.

Image

Turks land at Novorossiysk! I almost sink an Austrian destroyer on my way out of the Black Sea.

Image

I immediately contain the bridgehead.

Image

Italian front hold for now. I've tried to bring the understrength British artillery there to try and recapture Padua but Fafnir immediately sniped it. This time I bring the French one - front won't hold without it.

October-November 1915

My lines in the West finally start to look solid enough. France gets Artillery 2! Hopefully I can get an opportunity to deal some damage on the next trun when he pushes further.

Image

I try to use the good weather and counterattack. It is very painful - even with art 2 all I get are even results or a very slight advantage. I need Inf Weapons asap.

Image

Same slow grinding in the East. Russians are getting pushed back to the last railway line, connecting the front. At least I got Infantry Warfare 1 - now their readiness hangs around 80-90%.

Image
Image

Things are looking grim in Italy - Germans are threatening the northern flank.

Image

Even mountain hex does not help me - they breakthrough. Looks like I am about to lose Verona too.

Image

Bulgarian corps land at Novorossiysk...

Image

... and immediately leaves the next turn.

December 1915

I am starting to get frustrated and a bit desperate. Try to seize the initiative, since there is no mud or snow, and go on full offensive near Dijon. Two of three artillery units get hit. Also Plumer gets one exp pip.

Image

Russia gets Infantry weapons 1 and Artillery 2! That should even the playfield somewhat.

Image

Russian Baltic fleet is getting decimated in the ports. All I can is try to dish out at least some damage in return.

Image

Finally action in the Caucasus - Ottomans approach the Russian lines. My bet - Fafnit shipped some artillery in Trabzon. Time to set up my defences here. At least I have the advantage of mountain troops.

Image

Venice falls, along with Italian morale (and mine...)

Image

Also here is a research table, since I forgot to make a screenshot during the summer.
