Air Assault BPs

Post by Tazak »

Putting together a air assault BP making a few mistakes but kinda enjoying figuring out how it works. I do have a couple of questions while I rebuild my scenario after making a complete mess of things

FM5 says that embarkation affects the whole scenario, I figure that means that loading troops into helicopters before creating the BPs, which would then limit the same troops to the same helicopters for every BP, Question - can I manually disembark troops and embark them on different helicopters for each BP or is this likely to break things.

Having created BP1 in which I kept the forces in the same locations as originally deployed in the setup. Got the BP to work as expected after a couple of attempts and would say I have enough understanding to create a BP in another scenario with no issues.

Creating BP2 I then choose to 'un-deploy' all forces to select a different area of the map for them to start from. However this tags the troops as undeployed which the scenario editor will normally flagged as a issue that needs addressing before the scenario is finished - Question is, does being embarked disregard the 'undeployed' tag

Thanks CD,
Question is, does being embarked disregard the 'undeployed' tag
got a 2nd BP working and the scenario editor allowed it so the question is now, is this correct or have i missed/messed something

When I first read this, my initally reaction was that, "no you can't". However, I realized that I never tried to do that myself. So I took the First Dance scenario and created a new BP and disembarked a couple of the assault plts and moved them to a different location and then loaded them on different helos. When I ran it, the BP worked. So, it appears that you can do that.

Don't "un-deploy" them if you just want to move them "disembarked" to a new location. Hover your mouse over the hex where the helo and embarked assault units are located and select the assault unit (infantry) you want to disembark and select "disembark". It will then be unloaded and you can then move it to the location on the map that you desire.

I hope this answered your question.

thanks Charles, spot on with the info

trying to create a WP mixed ground and heliborne assault so ideally looking to have the forces appear from different locations and take different routes in each BP

We didn't envision this and thus did not test for this situation. I would expect the "new BP" to work, but the old one to be potentially broken, especially when you change load units from different task forces on the helicopters for the new BP.

Well this is interesting, it appears to work

Created a simple test scenario, 1 soviet air assault company, 1 group of Hinds, 1 Group of Hips

Base scenario I loaded the AA company into the Hinds and created BP1 with the hinds conducting a air transport on a southern route and the Hips moved a northern route on a sweep mission - save the scenario as AA Test and played the first 20min, as expected the Hinds dropped off the AA Company

I then reloaded the scenario in the editor, disembarked the AA company from the hinds and loaded them into the Hips, I created BP2 very similar to BP, Hips moved a northern route to drop of the AA Company, with the Hinds doing a sweep mission on a southern route. the AA Company air assault location was different to BP1

I play tested BP2 and it went as expected with the Hips dropping off the AA company (it also seems that 2 Hip units barely moved, I think these are 2 Hips that didnt have any passengers loaded but were still part of the air transport mission), I then restarted the scenario and chose BP1, I was honestly expecting things to go wrong at this point, but the Hinds dropped of the AA company as dictated in BP1

Had a thought and tried something else to see if I can break the game, so I created V3 of the same scenario, this time with the AA Company starting dismounted

In both BPs, the AA Company start under the hinds (the BPs appear to auto place them under the Hinds to the left of the image), in BP1 the AA company load into the Hinds who then start the air transport mission

What was then surprising in BP2, the Hips move to the AA Company load them and start their air transport mission

Loving this transport system you folks have built

Created a 3rd BP, this time I 'undeployed' everything, set the new starting locations and loaded the AA Company into the Hips

All 3 BPs play as expected, I would say the air transport system/BP is very robust :D

If the airborne force start dismounted, the BP system is pretty robust. It was designed to handle a second insertion, mid scenario, where the transport helicopters may have taken losses but still needed to pick up airborne forces and insert them.
