New Scenario for Testing -- The Battle of the Eger, 1986

Post by Mgellis »

New beta for testing...

It's 1986 and you need to make a surprise attack against the Soviets so they won't be able to make a surprise attack tomorrow. All you have to do is blow up some bridges. Simple, right?

As always, please let me know what you think. Is there anything that needs to be improved with...

* Briefing
* Scenario description
* Events
* Scoring
* Units chosen and their placement (I used the OpenTopo map to find where buildings near the bridges were located)...any changes recommended for the aircraft, etc. each side has available?
* General difficulty (I have it rated as three...should be higher?)

...and anything else you can think of that might make this more interesting, more fun, or more challenging?

Thanks in advance!

Nice Cold War stuff 8-)

I looked at it briefly and will do it again with more time this week.

Some things to think about:

-The intell picture of NATO is empty at the start of the scenario and you need the RF-4 Phantoms to discover the bridges. Can the bridges be set to auto detection? A bridge and infrastructure is known ;-)

-The NATO terrictory is without any Air defense, what makes the MiG-29's easy to roam around and do anything they like.
I do not want to bring in my own stuff but you can use West-Germany Cold War - 1989 (single unit airfields) from the workshop to fil in your area of operations and delete the rest if you want to.

-Warshau Pact BVR tactics where to go straight in and not to crank.

Just some thoughts to punder about.
Thanx for sharing and a challenging setup!

The bridges actually are auto-detect (I think all non-mobile facilities are). But there is a lot of clutter with the various neutral buildings surrounding the bridges so you need to zoom in to find them. But they should just be there.

Good call about air defense. I will do a bit of research and add some appropriate sites.

I'll set up the Warsaw Pact tactics as per your advice. Thanks.

Anyone else tried this one out yet? I think it's in pretty good shape, but I'm hoping to get more feedback about what its strengths and weaknesses are, what could be improved, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the new scenario :)

v1 tested on B1892.

The result was a triumph with 1380 points.

Noticed the following for you to consider:

- Typos:

Description: "near near"

Briefing: "eger", "WINDS ne AT 3 KTS."

- Neutrals is a selectabke side.

- Scenario options like submarine comms, drone autonomy,... are ON.

- A 3rd city is cited in the briefing, but it is not present on the map.

- Red ACs enter NATO airspace and there are no ADs but your own ACs as Blast33 commented.

- Warning due to flight size for the red side.

Pic 1.png
Pic 1.png (9.08 KiB) Viewed 274 times

- No points per WP AC destroyed.

- The scenario ended when the triumph points were achieved.. there were still 11 h 42 ' to go, perhaps the triumph is too easy?

- No damaged civilian structures after the bombing, anyway there are no point losses if this happen.

- E-3A destroyed event is repeatable, but there is only 1.

- Tanker destroyed event is not considering the Tristars?

- More fun? What about adding A-10s. A surprise event with armor and mechanized red units that cross the border in another point, and you have to destroy them with A-10s. This could happen after the destruction of the bridges and when the player thinks that has already won ;)

- Regarding the bridges, I have no idea but the AI can be useful for this, 3 asked. Note the addition of railroad bridges due to logistics importance.

Perplexity.

Thanks for the very detailed feedback. I appreciate it. I think I got the errors you and Blast33 spotted.

Just posted version 2.

I deliberately didn't award points for Warsaw Pact aircraft because they are not considered important--what matters is that you take out the bridges, the radars, the SAMs, etc.

It sounds like the biggest issue is that I've made the scenario too easy. Do you have any thoughts on how to make it more challenging? Should I simply reduce the number of aircraft available to NATO?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

...
The SAMs in the area are fine and corresponds to what would be there historically (the SA-6 are quite dense - six batteries around bridges would require assets from two divisions but czechoslovak motor-rifle divisions close to border have them so its fine). You can throw in few SA-7b if you really want but types of systems and its numbers are fine. Maybe you could add an SA-4 battery in the area (like single battery from soviet 5th SAM Brigade form CGF) representing Soviets on the move to the border crossings.

I would however recommend to change the air component. You have here two Warsaw Pact air bases though well equipped. But that doesn't represent year 1986 well. I think that interceptors from Altenburg air base in East Germany would intercept targets over Bohemia only in dire situation but this doesn't look like that at first look from Warsaw Pact point of view. So instead of it there should be czechoslovak Zatec air base - it is closer to the are and mainly the role of state air defense 11th fighter regiment is to just protect this area. At this time it still had one squadron with MiG-23MF and two squadrons with MiG-21PFM.

The second air base in scenario is Plzen-Line (Dobrany). There you have MiG-23MLD. While it can represents soviets reinforcements I think that main air component should still be czechoslovak MiG-21 (at this time variants MiG-21MF/M/F). Though this regiment (5th fighter regiment from air force) would be more used over Bavaria but some flights could be still utilized for air defence (they did that in peacetime). Finally I would add soviet Milovice air base with its 114th fighter regiment with three MiG-23M squadrons as its area of operations would overlap over this zone.

I don't know if this would make scenario harder - there would be older warsaw pact fighters but more of them.

I just uploaded version 3.

Biggest changes are...

* I added the base at Zatec (MiG-21s)
* I added a small point bonus for taking down Warsaw Pact aircraft
* I placed several aircraft in "Maintenance" loadout. They are available for players to add if the scenario is too hard, but the baseline is now fewer NATO aircraft vs. more Warsaw Pact aircraft.
* I added a message if you achieve the Victory condition.

So...please let me know how well this works. Is the current set-up sufficiently challenging, too easy, or too hard? And, of course, is there anything else I need to fix (do all the events work properly, did I miss any typos, etc.).

Thanks in advance!
