nice game, sometimes can't move units into hex with other units in it
I just bought this game and am doing the tutorial mission at Omaha and Point de hoc.
The game looks realistic and fun with nice looking map and good manual (I read 1/3 so still need to finish it).
I am carefully reading the manual and tutorial info panels.
My problem is when I move a unit into a hex that already has some of my units in it and it never allows the move. And yes there are only a few units so under the 9 unit limit.
Right now I am trying to move an artillery and engineer from the boats to Normandy into a hex with my units in it. When I click on the artillery, then left click onto the land hex to move there, the game switches unit selected to a friendly infantry in the target hex. I tried over & over & over but am never allowed to move the artillery there despite full movement.
So I gave up and tried to move the artillery inland past the shore hex and I finally was allowed to move the artillery because the target hex had no friendly units it. Then when I clicked back on the boat hex to get the engineer, the artillery CAME BACK to the boats and used up all its movement doing that silly yo-yo move.
So why can't I just move the artillery onto the shore hex to be with my other units there? This problem is happening to me everywhere. This is just the latest example. I keep having to give up on moving units into hexes with friendlies in it because I am not allowed to because the game switches selection every time to a unit already in the target hex.
Is there a hotkey to help the move happen without switching selection? I tried shift left click but it still does the switch and refuses the move.
Here is a picture of it after the engineer moved down to the yellow border hex. The artillery is still offshore now without movement points due to the yo-yo move. The shore hex below is where I was not allowed to move it.

Re: nice game but can't move units into hex with other units in it
Sorry again another problem
I tried to bombard a German position on the coast with my artillery, but the artillery moved onto the German hex. I tried to move infantry onto the hex but they will attack normally (which I want to do).
Why did my artillery move onto the German hex instead of doing a bombard? You can see the artillery sitting on the German hex on to the top right area on the coast....

Edit: I came back to this game later and used U to undo the move and then was able to bombard with the arty. I wonder why sometimes artillery want to move onto the German hexes instead of fire. I don't see a bombard button so I can only hope for the small explosion icon to show over the target hex instead of a yellow arrow moving there.

Yes, took me a bit to get used to the fire and movement in this game. In the "planning phase" you can move (in the case above you planned a move to the hex" or do a "bombardment" with the "R" key. When you do a bombardment the will have a shield icon show up for defensive bombardment or turn to a target icon (while hovering over the unit). I would also recommend turning on artillery Mission lines (hotkey G) so you can see the Green lines with explosion for defensive fire or red lines for offensive artillery.GiveWarAchance wrote: Wed Sep 09, 2026 5:31 am Sorry again another problem

Yes, in the planning phase you can undo any planned move with the "U key".
I hope this helps.

Congratulations on your purchase too! The beauty in this game is playing player in a PVP match which really gets you on the edge of your seat when getting the turn back and watching the turn play out. Will your men do what they were told or will the enemy get to that key hex before you do. Intense.
Again Congrats!!!!
Again Congrats!!!!

Also, you can hover over just the edge of the unit in a stack you want to move to move it. You don't have to click the whole stack then click off units in the stack. Took me a bit to figure this out (actually did it by accident) but when I did it saved a MEGA amount of time on turns.

Re: nice game, sometimes can't move units into hex with other units in it
Also a VERY big item in the game is "stacking". If you try and move through a hex that has 9 stacking already in the hex you will "not" be able to move through it. So you have to plan accordingly. Also Tracked and Moto units move quickly so at times you will have to use the "W" hotkey (wait X amount of MP's) to coordinate attacks. I suxxed at it at the begining but have almost gotten it down now. This could be the reason some of your units are not moving.
ALSO, if you get bombarded or attacked you may get a "delay" on your movement. I have had many battles that caused delay to happen and my unit didn't move at all.
. Can be frustrating especially if you need that unit somewhere else but to me that is great FOG of war not knowing if this unit is going to be held up in localized attacks. So your unit could have been attacked or bombarded for it to not move.
ALSO, your unit may retreat if it is a RECCE unit and on just defend (not defend at all costs) since a RECCE unit will always retreat from contact. At first I didn't like this but this is actually GREAT since you can do many neat things with this in the game.
So look at these things to see if one of these happened for your units not to move.
Hope this helps and just ask questions I am more than happy to help since I am back in the USA from Japan now.

Re: nice game, sometimes can't move units into hex with other units in it
(see snapshot below) Did you purchase combat supply for your units? Right click the unit and click the first icon in the bottom left. This will bring up the "Main Supply Source" menu. You will see halfway down the menu a Combat+ check box. By checking that box AND you have enough supply (green arrow pointing to your stockpile onhand) will double the combat ability of your units
. Once I figured that out it changed my game. You will also notice Move+ check box (yes you can do both if you have the supply) to double your move points for your units in the game.
With Combat and move supply you can move your Armor unit over the German Artillery (if you wanted) with an overrun move destroying it with a 10:1 attack in that clear terrain. You destroy it and no losses to you

Re: nice game, sometimes can't move units into hex with other units in it
Take note of what you are attacking with and your "integrity" of the attack. Many times it is better to attack by units of the same division than "mass" attacking with everything since the latter attack could be as low as 50% integrity degrading your offensive power substantially. Where a divisional attack will have 80% to 100% integrity (keeping your Combat power at max). So precision is much better than quantity on many of these attacks.

Re: nice game, sometimes can't move units into hex with other units in it
wow thanks OrderInChaos that was a huge helpful reply.
I saw some of that in the manual but need to finish reading it. I was wondering about the combat supply feature because I saw it in an AAR without explanation and now you explained it nicely with the picture. Big thanks. And the move+ is good to know too. I guess we have to make sure the HQ is close enough to give the supply.
I wonder about the W wait order (also I saw in manual). Does it say in time how long to wait or it is just a generic wait order? When to use it? Is it when you move attack with both infantry and tanks and you want to slow down the tanks? Is it for a 2 hex move or more or also for one hex move?
And I see your advice to attack with a full division not mixed with other units. That makes sense. I had that mixed habit from SSG games which have a different system of keeping divisional units close together in a radius for full combat strength but could mix with other units doing attacks. So this game is different maybe more realistic. I read Germany often mixed units from various divisions sometimes.
You lived in Japan? I was living in Nagoya for a large portion of my life and also in Toyohashi next to it for half a year. Doing the usual ESL teacher routine. I read a lot of books about WW2 when I was there, especially Stackpole books and Osprey campaigns.
By chance I am reading now a book called "The Last Hill" which is about Rudder's Rangers. So I was halfway through the book reading about the Ranger attack on Point de Hoc and Omaha (5th batt on Omaha and 2nd climbed the cliff). By sheer chance when I started this tutorial it was about the exact same thing as the part of the book I was reading.

Re: nice game, sometimes can't move units into hex with other units in it
About attacking with a complete division.... There is Rangers, 29th infantry, 1st inf and V Corps. In my new attempt at the tutorial (failed first time), I got ashore on two points with 29th infantry and 1st infantry. Now I have V Corps which is 2 tanks battalions, one engineer and a bridge repair unit with a HQ but no infantry. So I should be adding the V Corps tank units to the infantry of 29th or 1st to combine for an attack? Will that give a 50% debuff? I know the manual says there is a shock value added minus 1 for each infantry included, but I am just wondering about mixing V Corps with infantry. Are they in the same Corps? I don't know how to check order of battle yet (I probably read about it but forgot how to).
If I add Rangers to the 29th infantry division's attack, the mixing will give a 50% debuff? Or maybe I misunderstood.

Re: nice game, sometimes can't move units into hex with other units in it
I lost my 2nd attempt at the tutorial with the same result: we just cleared Omaha but have not advanced to Isigny town at all cause it took that long to secure the landing zone. The German defenders are very resolute. Even at 0% readiness they hung on for another couple of turns against attacks from multiple sides by a whole division.
There are large German defenses around Grandcamp-des-Banes and Isigny which is the objective so I think it would take me 5 to 10 more turns to get there or more cause attacking is hard in this game.
Has anyone won the tutorial mission? It seems impossible to get there in 10 turns cause it took that long to clear Omaha area while the 82nd was bottled up in their start area with larger German units around them. Should the 82nd move out of their start area and rush to Omaha or Isigny? They will leave behind their depots and objectives to the Germans if they do that.
Here is the last turn I gave up without doing that last turn cause there is no way to get to Isigny with 2 large German stacks in the way. The yellow hex is the Isigny objective we are supposed to capture.
I had an ongoing problem with the stuff still on boats. Every turn I ordered them to move to shore that we secured, but they refused and wanted to stay on the boats. I ordered them about 6 times to move to land. How do you force them to move? I know there is a 9 unit limit but should that block every unit from moving? It seems odd because historically they moved immediately to land even under fire cause there were incoming mortars that were deadly to the boats.Or maybe in this game they are on the transports and not in the Higgins boats for the 3 days so mortars are not an issue?

I think I will take a break from the game and try to read all the manual to figure it out.

Re: nice game, sometimes can't move units into hex with other units in it
Hi, you can't over-stack a hex so if there's 7 stacking points used of a max of 9 then you can't move onto or even through that hex with a unit of 3 stacking points.
Why can't you move through it, it's not like it's ending its turn in that hex, you might ask?
Well, because when the orders resolve, they do one turn at a time, and in the during that turn the next hex could become unavailable (enemy occupies it, hex costs rise, bridge destroyed etc) and it'll end the turn overstacked. And a hex can never be overstacked. So to move units through a hex you need to have space available in that hex.
Hope this helps!

Hello Ruth, I was thinking that might be the problem cause I tried to move the whole selected stack. I guess it may have reached over-stack and was rejected. I will try a 3rd time to do this.

Re: nice game, sometimes can't move units into hex with other units in it
Finished my 3rd attempt at the tutorial.
I can't get to Isigny last objective but was awarded a victory with 42/55 score.
https://imgur.com/a/8qvWIiK
I did better but still have the problem of some units don't want to come ashore on Omaha. You can see the artillery offshore in this picture, plus the infantry unit on the corner of Omaha jumps back out to sea after the failed attack. Both of those units were out there for at least 5 turns I was begging them to come ashore. I was trying to move the arty to the hex with only one unit on it every turn so there is not over-stack problem. It is random that some units don't follow orders or just don't want to land?

You may have found a bug.
First . . . Are you playing "Get The Hell Off The Beach; Bloody Omaha" or the Tutorial?
Also what version of the game are you playing / using . . . v2.0.2?
Thanks,
Don.

Re: nice game, sometimes can't move units into hex with other units in it
tutorial with latest version 2.0.2
Now playing ThisGreatNewFront and wonder about move+
I turned on move+ for one unit in the 21st Panzer Div and noticed the entire division were all set to move+. I moved up some units, but had to turn off move+ for units closer to Caen to avoid giving the nefarious British paratroopers free attacks on our precious units. I only turned off move+ on one grenadier unit but again the entire division turned off move+ including the units that already moved up using the move+ longer move. Is this an exploit that needs to prevented? It could be exploited by turning off move+ on units that already moved to gain the long move without the vulnerability of being in convoys.
Why does the entire division switch on move+ when I only turned on one unit. I prefer to have some of 21st Panzer using move+ and the close ones to Caen with it turned off to avoid ambushes.

Re: nice game, sometimes can't move units into hex with other units in it
Got it . . . Tutorial . . . You found an old bug that *I thought* we squashed about two years ago / In the case of the Tutorial . . . We didn't. All other scenarios are good.
I sent an updated Tutorial Scenario to St. Ruth (Brian Kelly) to include in the patch - for Overlord - that he's finishing up.
Bottomline, in the "bug version" that game has Regiments and Brigades = 6 Stacking Points (each) and Battalions = 3.
Max Stacking (in the "bug version") = 10.
So when you tried to move the 1st Infantry Division's DIVARTY (Divisional Artillery) into the same hex as one of its Infantry Regiments . . . *Overstack* / Game says "Can't do it" and sends 1st Infantry's DIVARTY back to its start hex.
With regards to your 21st Panzer problem.
As to Move+ and/or Combat+. . . All units in a Division, Kampfgruppen, Separate Brigade or Regiment, etc. get the extra fuel and/or ammo. Not just one unit.
If you give them Move+ . . . They can either move in Travel Mode (blue arrow) or Attack Formation (green or yellow arrow). If in Travel Mode, they'll get Ambushed when they enter an enemy unit's Zone of Control (and stop moving). If they're in Attack Formation, they'll not find themselves being Ambushed (and if they have enough movement points) will not halt when they enter an enemy Zone of Control.
Needless to say, if the enemy is in their planned movement path and your unit has enough movement points, they may try and overrun the enemy unit(s) (if they have 10:1 odds or better).
Of course, a unit in Travel Mode can more further than a unit in Attack Formation, so that's the trade.
Hope I'm making sense,
Don.

oh I see. They have to have the blue travel mode, not the move+, to provide a free ambush to enemies that attack them. I forgot about that blue arrow mode. Okay no exploit or any problem with that.
Thanks for fixing the overstack bug in the tutorial.

I replayed "Night drop on Omaha" from the German side and the AI allies scored a victory.
This is credit to how good your AI is because I lost playing both sides to your AI but I did win as allies after a few tries.
I think your AI must be strong to win from both sides cause it it means it can both attack & defend well.
In this game, the Allied AI munched through my Omaha defenders and made their way down to Bayeux. I think I lost due to units being destroyed rather than objectives held.
