New Self-Vs-Self Game, New Version 01.04.16

Post by ReginaldBednar2 »

End of German Turn 1: June 22, 1941
Tallinn falls and is re-supplied by air. Port of Liepaja also falls. Courtland Peninsula is cutoff. Concentrated on driving down west coast and reaching Tallinn, and not cutting off units (many routed outside of pocket).
Bialystok bulge isolated, five hexes west of Minsk.
Lvov fell and resupplied by air. Around 11 divisions in huge pocket west and southwest of Lvov. BEST SOVIET FORCES ARE IN SOUTHERN SECTOR.

PICTURE CAPABILITY WORKING AGAIN. SEE BELOW.

End of Russian Turn 1: June 22, 1941
Evacuated industry from Minsk. Had to RR units to form Daugava/Dvina River Line. Left almost whole area west of that line empty of units. Sailed two HQ units out of port Ventspils.
Weak line around Minsk, but many RR-entrained units nearby. Re-arranged Bialystok pocket for 360-degree defense, with emphasis covering double RR line through Brest Litovsk. Pocket roughly Semyatichi-Pruzhany-Ivatsevichi-Baranuvichi-Mosly-Grodno-Austov-Grajewi_Lomza-Zambrow perimeter. Trying to abandon Priyat Marshes to separate from the Wehrmacht.
Przemysl pocket un-isolated but no withdrawal possible; this saves it from destruction for one turn. Line at Stanislav area. Odessa sector reinforced with Prut River Line defense.

Are you referring to War in the East, original? The new version has a much more realistic supply system, but I prefer supply dumps and aircraft units on the map, just like ground units. Then, one could specify how much freight to start trying to stockpile in each. I usually spend the AP points to have the computer move my freight and depots automatically.

i was referring to the version (01.04.16) of War in the East 2. your other AAR had the release .exe version of 01.00.07 which is from april 2021.
FYI, we are over 140 pages of bug fixes and changes in ... over the last 5 years ... THAT IS SCARY! ... and also hard to answer when you have a question about a something or anything that was already fixed and double patched ... you know - live. right? ;)

ah, and yes ... i prefer this version, WitE2 - feels like home. cheers! :)

End of Russian Turn 2: June 29, 1941

MASSIVE REINFORCEMENTS CALLED IN FOR NEXT TURN FROM RESERVE THEATER.

Attempting to slow down panzer drive to Pskov area. Units are very weak in that area but Wehrmacht infantry are not close. Abandoned Daugara River Line.

Minsk Line in central sector formed at great effort, then through Pripyat Marshes.

Massive retreat in southern sector. Tarnopol had to be abandoned due to so many depleted units. Kogilnik River Line was formed.

ONE KEY FOR BOTH SIDES IS TO TRY TO SHORTEN LINES AND ELIMINATE BULGES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, UNLESS ONE SIDE HAS A SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE IN TROOPS.

End of German Turn 3: July 6, 1941

Rested panzers in northern sector, waiting for infantry to catch up. Courtland cleared completely. Infantry haven't reached Dvina River Line.

Minsk fell and panzers rested, while Bialystok pocket completely. 2nd Panzer Group panzers all rested, waiting for infantry to catch up. Slow advance through Pripyat Marshes with exits sealed off to protect main RR arteries.

Przmysl pocket completely reduced. Taropol fell and panzers pushed towards Yampol. Prut River Line 100% taken.

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS

The first three turns for the German player are basically standard military advances along supply paths and creating pockets, mainly caused by initial setup of the Russian Army. TURN 4 IS DECISIVE SINCE THE PANZERS HAVE BEEN RESTED AND THE MAJOR RR SUPPLY PATHS HAVE ALREADY BEEN DEFINED. ARMY GROUP NORTH WAS HEAVILY REINFORCED WITH INFANTRY REINFORCEMENTS SINCE TERRAIN ON THE WAY TO LENINGRAD IS IN GENERAL VERY POOR (SWAMPS, RIVERS, AND WOODS). Sending the panzers around the Baltic coast (Riga-Tallinn) may seem temping, but without infantry to protect their fragile supply lines and the Narva River area swamp pocket seem to make this a very high risk. The Wehrmacht only has RR repair capacity for either approach, not both, so once committed, a selection to the other path is disastrous. Selecting the Narva approach with the major port of Tallinn being the major Narva River Line supply source for the Wehrmacht seems to not only be the conservative choice, but the optimal choice as well. It will take infantry a long time to fight from Pskov all the way to Leningrad without panzer units leading the way. TANKS DO NOT FIGHT WELL AGAINST STRONG INFANTRY IN SWAMPS.

End of Russian Turn 3: July 6, 1941

In northern sector, two big groups of reinforcements are sent to Narva River funnel and Pskov River Line (all still entrained from Moscow area). Fragments remaining from the disastrous first two turns guard hex 188, 118 and Pskov approaches. Rapid retreat towards funnel to try to keep Wehrmacht infantry from wiping entire line out.

Reinforcements sent to The Land Bridge approaches. Orel Military District helps each burden on Western Front HQ. Line exists just east of Minsk. Mogliev has no combat troops but RR lines to it are guarded.

Withdrawal to Dnestr River Line; Fortress Odessa created. Many fortified regions created to fortify this line.
